anyone have any experiences, opinions, or know anyone that went to VMI?
what are your thoughts of it as a college choice?

I have a high school friend whose two sons went there, enjoyed it and did quite well. They came from a military family, so maybe that helped.

I wouldn't have gone within 100 miles of the place for college, or let my child go through that Rat Line BS. Other's mileage may vary.

Likely as the best networking system in the state. Keydets look out for one another. Much respect for anyone that completed the program.

"Delayed satisfaction" is how I heard someone describe going to VMI. Personally, could and would never subject myself to four years of that. More power to anyone that does. From an athletics standpoint, they belong in the ODAC these days, unfortunately.

know many vmi guys and they are the most loyal people and as stated above, if you plan on remaining in VA, you will have many opportunities due to that loyalty. military is not for everyone but that type of situation really breeds a closeness not found in most other environments. the guys i do know are very normal, nice and driven.

Spiderman, if you're looking to go back to school, I probably wouldn't recommend vmi at this point...

I agree with this. Great alumni network. I do business with a number of VMI grads and find them all very pleasant.

VMI rivals Tech and W&L in terms of active and loyal alumni network, those guys are tight for life. Academically, VMI leaves a lot to be desired. That said, I know several alums who have done very well, but all of them but one were career military after leaving VMI.

The VMI environment is not every kid's cup of tea, but one positive is that Dabney Coleman is a VMI grad.

Actually, he never graduated. He only attended for two years and then enrolled at the University of Texas (Austin).

I stand corrected, I read that he went to UT for law school, didn't realize he never finished up at VMI.

I know many fellow Spiders will.laugh at me for saying the following.....I wish we would continue playing the Keydets in football and basketball.

don't know where dabney graduated but a friend of mine who is a keydet in richmond, takes care of some of his money. the downside, the VA governor is a keydet.

the naval academy is arguably the most difficult institution of higher learning to enter. they have tremendous resources and a stellar reputation. vmi is a local or regional institution with a great alum group but not even in the same conversation.

A friend of mine is a PhD professor at the Naval Academy, but before that Jack had a very successful
career in the private sector. One night as we sat and drank cocktails I asked Jack, how good are
students at the academy? He said,”I get challenged by them every time I walk into the classroom.
As a whole, they are incredibly smart. “
That was good enough for me.

FRS, school ranking is a very open for discussion deal. all the guys i know who are vmi grads are bright, smart, motivated, all around good guys. am sure an education there is as good as most places but just no comparison with the USNA.
