VCU is a winning program, with a winning coach, and winning culture

UR is a losing program, with a losing coach, and losing culture.

Players in winning programs with winning coaches and culture make winning plays. We saw that with Vince Williams. Similarly, we saw what happens when you have a losing program, coach and culture.

Anyone who is surprised by what happened yet again, just hasn't been paying attention. I fully expected us to do lose, because that is what we do. It is all we know how to do.

Vince Williams was confident in his shot. Golden is scared of the three point shot. And we can't make any winning plays down the stretch. Burton and Goose were dreadful on offense. The ending was so predictable

There is nothing worse than a smug VCU fan. 17 years (7-21) of ass kickings by your rival across the street should be enough to get a coach fired.

97 you hit the nail on the head here. But with that being said I’d rather go 0-100 against VCU than say I attended that pathetic excuse for a school. Wish we didn’t suck against them though

Pathetic? But they were established in 1838. I know because I saw it on the screen…

At this point even if you worship Mooney, how can you not think it's time to at least try something else -- literally ANYTHING else. The man is incapable of getting the job done. His system is not effective in this era of basketball and he has not been able to find a new one that is. Pull the plug.

I believe two things right now. 1. We should fire Mooney. 2. Still think this team can win the A10 tourney so I will cheer them to the end.

If we win the A10 tourney, or hell, even win one game in the A10 tourney that is enough for Mooney to stick around for another 10 years. So those two items on your list are in direct opposition to one another.

Even if we got remarkably lucky in A10 & won Moon should be gone. With all these guys moving on it’s a good time for a change at top regardless. Moon would have to win a ncaa game imo. Many of us tried to warn big hat no cattle Hardt about that 2 year extension he gave out.

In the postgame at least Goose was gutted. He played hard as hell & felt bad he couldn’t quite get that steal on Williams late. But to Mooney it was ho hum yet again. He was so happy with our defense even tho we gave up so many uncontested layups & dunks at the rim all night.

And that same statement is the attitude our athletic department has. You’re a part of the problem. “We may never beat them on the court but man we are a better school”. You sound like a uva fan. Do better than that.

97’s post in 1 tweet...

I love this! When would you ever see one of our players do this? vcu plays with this kind of attitude and the whole team feeds off of it. During the game towards the end I noticed each teams huddle during a timeout. Mike Rhoades was pounding the floor and getting into his players faces. Mooney and our huddle was just stoic with no emotion at whatsoever. Guys feed off the kind of energy vcu and their whole program have. Even during warmups their guys coming out and dunking during layup lines, all that kind of stuff gives you and edge. What’s our edge? Running a fancy back door cut? Not anything that gets guys fired up I can promise you that. Lastly mooney was whining his ass off about that loose ball that ended with Vince williams hitting the game winning 3. Vince williams ran over by the UR bench after and was yelling at mooney, I love that too. They just want it and care about winning more over there. Hard to hate that kind of program.

Maybe if we win, another program will be fooled and give Mooney a big contract?

Doesn't even bother me anymore. Good for VCU for having the leadership, desire, and coach to win consistently. Spider Basketball is irrelevant, because of the way the school chooses to run the program. We accept losing, so losing is what we get.

Always comes down to recruiting and now with the practice facility we should have no excuse to see uptick in talent.

Blows my mind we couldn't get one grad transfer (shooter) or big to come play with this group. What a waste.

Actually noticed something along these lines, or rather my wife did. During one of our late timeouts my wife who is not really a huge college basketball fan at all or even follower of the team asked me "who is that group of guys standing in the corner?" At this point the entire team was out huddled on the floor and MoonPie and three assistant were 25 feet away in the corner looking like they had seen Sasquatch. When I explained that was our head coach and his assistants I then had a really hard time explaining to her why they were so removed from the damn team at such a crucial juncture.

This doesn’t happen at just critical junctures, it’s every timeout. It requires a conclave to decide what we’re going to do and then a joint session to deliver the plan.

“Analysis paralysis.”

CM talked about this recently, while he and coaches huddle the players tell each other what they see and think about what's going on; then the coaches join in

Maybe the coaches should consider staying in time out.

I blame the players for not articulating themselves well enough to adequately inform the coaching staff about what is going on in these games!

Extend Mooney.

Pretty sure I've seen our last play before, don't think it worked then either. Am I dreaming, or do others recall the same set up, inbounds and missed shot?

yeah looked familiar. very nice play that got us a decent look from 25 feet inside of 3 seconds. can't expect much more.

to simplify things ... Tyler had a rough game and Williams was terrific.

I thought that was a solid play at the end. I didn’t like the one coming out of the timeout with 25+ sec left though and I think Gus took that shot…if I’m remembering correctly.

agreed. whatever we tried there didn't work. VCU made us use time, and they defend the 3 point line very well. we didn't get the exact shot we wanted. it wasn't a horrible look for Goose though.

Was there even a play at the end? It was just Gilly dribbling up the court and shooting a three, right? Nick was just standing in the corner. Would have been nice to try to run something quick to get him open there.

?
Gilly curled in the backcourt like he was getting the pass then sprinted up the right side. football pass was made to someone at mid court, who immediate passed to a streaking Gilly. he didn't handle the pass cleanly ... may have been tipped. but he gathered and got off the shot.

Yes it was a designed play and given the time I believe it was about as good as you would get. Yes Nick was in the corner but Banks for VCU is right there in the passing lane. Grant ran up from the middle then passed to Gilly as Nick cut to the corner. There wasn't another scoring option and Gilly got a decent look given the time. Highly doubt Nick gets that shot off even IF we could have gotten it to him.
