UR @ STFU 5pm Thursday - few thoughts

Ok how about this, rushed packing and transportation, limited preparation time, instant unexpected away game, etc. and we lose in part because of it. I still think another day or two before playing in PA would have been less unsettling.

I know the AD is doing the best they can, just think STFU made it more difficult for us than needed. I hope we stomp them.
amen brother

Give us some of that nice Spider Football swag the players wear and we'll call it even!

Well, call me cheap, but I'd like my $50 back please. I've donated plenty of money to UR over the last 50 years. They can hold it hostage until next year and give me a $50 credit on next year's season ticket price.

JOC addresses some of the issues...

https://www.richmond.com/sports/col...al&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=user-share

And JOC confirms we are indeed busing, the most likely action, team on its way now.

Maybe there will be a jmu article on why RMU is going to harrisonburg Thurs. Article seems to imply Thurs at Robins wasn't an option. Agree with Mo it is likely financial. Always a factor.

The referee crew up there might be interesting.

Logically yes we may play with chip on our shoulder. But hard to gauge pysche of team. If we do it's negated by other logistics. I was saying it was a trap game, now it's actually worse, harder than a trap. But as noted, we need the game, need the win. Sh!t happens.

doesnt the team have to drive back in the same rain storm as sfu would? if its for safety cancel the game.

Yeah but I think we can afford to stay in Altoona for a few days until the storm passes (if it got that bad) than St. Francis coming down here and being stuck without a hotel, as many Carolinians have invaded our hotel rooms this weekend.

The Spiders are under the direction of second-year head coach Rick Huesman. Huesman is 7-6 overall with the Spiders and 1-1 this season. He came to the Spiders after a successful eight-year run at his alma mater, Tennessee-Chattanooga.

SPIDERS OFFENSE
The Spiders rolled up 52 points on the Fordham Rams last weekend in a 52-7 victory to even their record at 1-1. The Red Flash will have to try and slow down quarterback Kevin Johnson, who accounted for four touchdowns in the win over the Rams. Johnson has averaged 230 yards per game through the air this season, completing 51 percent of his passes this season. He's also rushed for a pair of scores on 13 attempts this season. Johnson's favorite target is 6-2 senior Dejon Brissett. Brissett has hauled in seven passes for 195 yards and a score this season. He 173 of those yards against Fordham last week, the pre-season All-CAA wideout will be a player to watch. On the ground Deontez Thompson and Gordon Collins have shared the work this season. Both feature good size with Thompson lining up at 6-0, 215 and Collins at 6-0, 235. Both are averaging five yards per carry this season.

SPIDERS DEFENSE
The Spiders are set to line up in a base 4-2-5 nickel package. They have good size up front with the smallest guy measuring out at 6-2, 240. Defensive end Maurice Jackson leads the defense through two games, with 14 tackles, 4.5 for loss, three sacks and a forced fumble. While Johnson has led the way, fellow lineman Andrew Clyde was getting the pre-season accolades. The senior was named to three pre-season All-America teams and the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the top defensive player in the FCS. It is a balanced defense with five guys recording double digit tackles through two games. As a team the Spiders are averaging four sacks a contest and eight tackles for loss.

SPIDER SPECIAL TEAMS
Griffin Trau is the primary place kicker for the Spiders. He has gone 3/4 on field goals through two games with a long of 42. Micah Breckenridge handles the punting and has averaged 36 yards per kick with a long of 45. On returns, Dejon Brissett has just one return all season for 24 yards while Tyler Wilkins has one punt return for minus 2.

SCOUTING THE RED FLASH
Coach Chris Villarrial picked up career win number 37 last Saturday, a 45-14 triumph over Delaware State to move him within eight of the all-time wins record of 45 held by Art Martynuska. This is his ninth season at the helm after taking over for the 2010 season.

RED FLASH OFFENSE
The Red Flash will look to continue their balance through two games this season. Graduate student quarterback Bear Fenimore (Austin, Texas/Westwood) leads the passing attack, averaging 221 yards through the air through two games. Fenimore has a pair of touchdown passes against one interception and has run for three, all on quarterback sneaks. He's completing 58 percent of his passes, with the majority going to wide outs Cyrus Holder (Uniondale, N.Y./Milford Academy) and Kamron Lewis (Fresno, Calif./Edison). The senior Lewis has 11 grabs through two games and is averaging over 13 yards per catch. Holder has grabbed 10 balls through two games and has bested Lewis with a 17 yard-per-catch average. On the grounds, it's been a three-pronged attack led by Jymere Jordan-Toney (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin). The senior has logged 83 yards so far this season. Joining him in the backfield has been Joel Denley (Beaumont, Texas/West Brook), who has been a change-of-pace back and a receiving threat. Denley has seven grabs out of the backfield and a touchdown. Freshman Chris Cropper (Wilmington, Del./St. Frances Academy) tallied 91 yards last week against the Hornets including a 65-yard touchdown run, earning him NEC Freshman of the Week honors.

RED FLASH DEFENSE
The "Darkside" wreaked havoc last weekend against the up-tempo Hornets, holding Del State to just 240 yards despite running 83 plays. Sean Orsini (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) recorded 2.5 sacks to lead the charge and was named an FCS Honorable Mention for Defensive Player of the Week by Stats FCS. Edge rusher Da'Jon Lee (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) earned that honor from Stats FCS in week 1 and leads the team with three sacks and four tackles for loss. Through two games the "Darkside" has averaged 7.5 tackles for loss per game and three sacks per contest. Like Richmond, it has been a balanced effort across the defense with five guys already in double figures in tackles and three with at least three tackles for loss.

RED FLASH SPECIAL TEAMS
Eric Bofenkamp (Warren, Ohio/John F. Kennedy) is the primary place kicker for the Red Flash and has connected on 3-of-4 field goals with a long of 41. Andrew Zecca (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Gov. Livingston) handles the punting and has enjoyed a strong start to the year, averaging nearly 47 yards per boot on 10 kicks. Three of those kicks have pinned teams inside the 20 and three have gone over 50 yards with a long of 62. On the return side, Nick Rinella (Collegeville, Pa./La Salle College) is the primary return man. He has averaged nearly 25 yards per kick return with a long of 33 this season and 19.5 yards per punt return, including a 47-yard return for a touchdown against Del State last week.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Red Flash will have 10 days to prepare for the Albany Great Danes as the two are set to square off on Saturday, September 22nd. Kickoff from Bob Ford is set for 7 p.m.

How about UR opens the RC for ticket holders, sells beer and food, and shows the game on the big screens.
A wag on the Dillweed board showed his A hole ignorance by claiming UR moved the game to St Francis in order to play in a bigger stadium! What a moron! So St Francis' stadium with a 3450 capacity is LARGER than Robins Stadium's 8200 capacity? What a dickhead! I hate those bastards as all Spiders should!

Agree. If we don't win this one, there is going to be some "splaining" to do regarding why we made this deal. Either we are supremely confident we can beat them despite flipping the favorables to them or we are fools.

This was a ridiculous decision to move the game so early before seeing the storm’s track. Meteorologists can’t predict yesterday’s weather, much less a week ahead of time. It may or may not even rain an inch Saturday.

I think the erratic track of this storm had a lot do with it. Even two days ago no one in Georgia was worried, and now who knows. South Carolina gonna get hit harder than they thought. Better safe than sorry?

Yes. Tell me more about how an athletic administrator is supposed to gauge the commitment level of an opposing school to drive their team into a tropical storm on a cancelled parents weekend when no other games are going on in the state. Years in advance.
Not to mention, "there" vs. "their".

Would never have AD or anyone at UR negotiate for me. Obviously they're bad at it. Contracts for games like this need to be tougher going forward, and I agree SFU should forfeit if they wouldn't take the neutral site compromise, which should be a very last resort. Home games are a priority. When you're a top 25 team, act like it. No reason with a decision made earlier this week SFU couldn't have arrived yesterday (and gotten hotel rooms somewhere in metro RIC area), play this afternoon and get back to PA early tomorrow AM. Hope they will ensure NEC Commissioner knows this is not negotiating in good faith and it could hurt teams in their conference getting games against us in the future for FB and other sports.

well said

Our football team will take care of business today. Going forward hope we encourage all of our CAA brethrens to never schedule this school again in football. They need to be black listed because of this stunt, but not before we beat them down.

I understand the premise of establishing the run, but no passes when we are in their territory? We have the best group of wide receivers anywhere, we need to use them (even if running)

Penalties stupid penalties throw the ball away and avoid sack. So poorly coached

defense playing solid, but that's as bad a first quarter offensively as I've seen in a long time. At least we didn't have any turnovers.

Great job by special teams! I am mildly surprised that we didn't go for 2 and try to make it a 7 point lead.

This offense needs to get rolling faster in games. They haven't done much to help our other phases.
