UR Head Coach Candidates

I’ve said it before but scott Abell from Davidson I think would be a great fit. That triple option they run out of the shotgun is dangerous. Plus UR’s administration would love a guy who has coached at W&L and Davidson.
i agree with u 712. Especially bc it sounds so familiar tho I can’t pinpoint where 😉

43 years old.Currently 7-2.

There are certainly some parallels between Chesney and Dave Clawson back in 2003. Dave was a little younger back then and probably had more 'chops' from his experience at Lehigh and VU.

Chesney has had good success a D2 level as well.A concern is that his recruiting might be too New England centric whereas our talent levels are both Commonwealth and south of the Mason Dixon.

has the decision to find a new coach already been made , coach russ sure seems like a man who knows he may not be here next year

I can't imagine Huesman is going anywhere. Hardt will say these two wins are signs of turning the corner, blah blah blah. Can't see Hardt bothered enough to fire him.

There was never an announcement of extending Russ over the years was there? I couldn't imagine us signing him to a 6 year contract or renewing him after a 5th year if it expires.

Thats my understanding as well. he signed a 5 year contract in dec of 2016. My only concern was a cancelled 2020(covid) season. I'm sure he was paid which should end his contract, unless he took a cut in pay for a 6th year, a horrible thought!!!

Who UMass should hire -- Bob Chesney, Holy Cross coach: Whatever it takes, UMass should throw the bank at Chesney if he's interested. The Minutemen have a budding star in their midst. Edsall stepped down shortly after Holy Cross embarrassed UConn 38-28 in the season opener. Chesney didn't need that result to get his name out there, but it certainly helped. The 44-year-old has led the Crusaders to the FCS playoffs in two of his three seasons. The drawback is Chesney has no FBS experience. Not even close.

The irony of course is if we get to 6-5 than Russ likely keeps the job until Hardt retires. Just like Mooney…you don’t have to make the postseason, just be in the fringes to where the AD can justify away losses.

Hopefully Umass looks to make a big splash like Uconn did.
.
I could argue that Richmond is a better job than Umass at this point. I wonder if Delaware might look in Chesney's direction too.

I think Hardt will use yesterday’s win to justify brining this staff back. It just seems logical given his previous decisions.

There’s reason to think he won’t bring Huesman back. He let Shafers contract expire and brought in his own guy. Huesman wasn’t a Hardt hire and certainly hasn’t done anything to distinguish himself that Hardt would have to justify if he wanted to make a change.

I’d actually think he’d be more likely to make a change because he’ll own the contract going forward.

What is UR's cut off line on coaches? 50%?

If Huesman wins at WM , he will be 24-25 during his tenure, 49% winning percentage. Mooney is at 56% during his tenure.

If you are a Spider fan, particularly a Spider sports fans, both suck! Is this the best we can do? Really?

Preseason hype(which we buy-in) makes us keep coming back for more and more...

Any extension would really just be an admission that UR AD doesn’t care about winning or playoffs.

“Nah, we’re all good here.”

Yea, Russ is a good guy and there may have been some forces working against him during his time here.

But this isn't a hard choice.

Agreed. We haven’t made the playoffs in 5 years. Time to try something else. We don’t need to see 10 years of “just missing”.
