UR Head Coach Candidates

They don't look at all sports the same.

Interesting, I knew Basketball was a head count sport, but I thought FCS football was not. I thought they could give half scholarships.I thought I remembered Clawson doing a bit of it.

FCS is indeed an equivalency sport. Up to 63 scholarships can be divided among up to 85 counters. Rule 15.5.6.2.

That's the way I understood it too. Only difference you cannot give a "bonus" scholly from the academic side to increase the numbers.

SF do you know if a financial aide package counts? EG our VA students coming tuition free like any other student of need, then add a scholly of limited value to cover books, room and board.

Loren Johnson is a great idea if we can get admissions to work with athletics a little better. I have always said we need to be able to put up a wall around the 804 area and get everyone who isn’t quite good enough to go to VT or uva. Loren Johnson would give us a great chance at doing that with his connections all over the state. Clawson and London did a pretty good job of recruiting the 804 so need to bring that back. That being said my vote would be for Scott Abell. As mentioned earlier UR administration would love him because of where he’s coached at and his offense that he runs is fascinating. It’s a triple option from the gun that goes fast paced, unlike most triple option teams. I’ve studied it some wanting to be a future coach some day and it would really trip up teams we play against.

How about this: Bring back London.
Outside of taking a benz (Which we are not right now) and not crashing it entirely, do you think he could build the program back up to what it was when he got it?

I think that would be a tall task.

Suspect he is happy there and not planning on a change

I think there have been some changes on this front, but I haven't followed them closely. It used to be that non-athletic aid still counted against the limits unless you met certain criteria that would exempt the academic aid.

I think starting last year they exempted need-based and academic aid for most sports, but I'm not totally sure how it works. I imagine need-based aid is dependent on athletic aid as it is with other non-need aid.

For example, I don't think you can go through the financial aid process, come out with a result that says your expected contribution is $25K, so you get $50K in need-based aid, and then use $25K of athletic money to bring your costs down to zero. I think the athletic money comes off the top and then your need is determined.

I don't know specifically how it would work with the Promise to Virginia program...they actually get tuition, room, and board all covered, so there's not a whole lot left other than books.

This was a fleeting thought that i had too. Mike certainly would inject some enthusiasm initially but i think there is ample evidence that he can't "build" the way we need it to be done.

Bobby Wilder should be someone to consider too. Ran out of gas coaching ODU who was chasing FBS glory but was a damn good coach on this level. Had he not been coach at ODU we would of wound up with Taylor Heinike as we were his only other offer.

Another former Maine guy (like Jim Reid, actually). Who knew Maine was such a hotbed of coaching?

Bobby Wilder plays zero defense.

Young, hell of a former player at UNH,would bring a needed spark to the program to get students, alumni and casual fans players and recruits re-engaged.Contract can easily get pegged at mid to high 200s with a number of achievable goals as incentives.

Fordham grads have a good head coaching history at UR too...the connection has worked before!

Go Spiders!

These types of threads have a long history on this board...................the basketball board has had a few................maybe change the title of the thread...............Wouldn't it be nice to have such and such as our head football coach?.......with the mindset in our Athletic Department …mediocrity can settle in for quite a while because there is supposedly some optimistic reason for why next year will be better...........

i would think if this finishes as bad as its going now, it would be an easy choice , but i am far from and insider. on home games i like to get to the stadium early , get a bite to eat and relax, i find it interesting to watch coach russ , he has almost no contact with the players or coaches, as they walk by hardly even eye contact. maybe i read to much into it, if he is let go , will there be much sadness around the program ?, i doubt the fanbase will be upset, looking forward to hearing from some of the insiders point of view

Ugh - this now has a new fear. The only thing worse than not firing Russ would be only firing Russ and retaining all the assistants. I’m not saying that all of them need to go but I definitely would want the new coach to build their own staff with the people they want (one caveat - no Durden)

Does anyone know if he ever got extended? The original deal was for five years. We always hear about how no coach can recruit without 4 years of extensions at any point in time, but I'm pretty sure those extensions are not really happening too often at the FCS level. But it would be pretty near impossible to recruit as a lame duck, no? Maybe he has some type of school option for an extension that allows him to recruit but allows us to fire him without any more money owed to him if we choose?

I understand that we don't have a lot of confidence in the folks we have handling the hiring but i really don't think this is a genuine concern.

David walsh is more than capable and it would not surprise me if the ball is in motion

Haha Mo. I never felt it would have been a concern that Mooney would have gone an entire 10yr contract without making an NCAA appearance and still be the coach.

the Dan Synder hire an assistant before the head coach move isn’t unprecedented. I sure hope it’s not an issue but I feel like we find new & creative ways to shoot ourselves in the foot all the time.

Haha. I’d certainly take him over Durden!

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned the most likely candidate that a $150k search firm would recommend to us…

6–14 record at Bucknell. I would say that's even a bridge too far for Hardt, but Hardt's successor at Bucknell hired him based on a 17–38 record at Valpo.

We also need a new AD. Hardt needs to go. We need a young go getter AD!

Yes, but the moderators would combine all of comments and name the thread UR Coaching Candidates.

Really good coach, but basically a Michigan lifer and he's 60. Probably wouldn't get much of a look from us.

Bob Shoop might get a look. He’s a guy that did really well at W&M Vandy & penn state as DC. Started to go sideaways at TN like for so many others. Prior to that he looked like even on way to FBS head coach. Always thought he might end up back at W&M as head coach. But then the $$ he was getting in FBS was so big. But now just analyst at Miami kinda off the big $ track. But very solid coach imo has plenty of fcs experience, done well at both levels incl schools like U of R & might want to run the show as that train left the station in FBS. Plus he has the Ivy pedigree that would play well w our high ups. Idk but a guy I’ve liked for many years. Tho he’s a defense guy & I’d say we r way more likely to go for an offensive coach.

I’ve said it before but scott Abell from Davidson I think would be a great fit. That triple option they run out of the shotgun is dangerous. Plus UR’s administration would love a guy who has coached at W&L and Davidson.
