UH, OH. . .JOC WILL BE IN MOONEY'S DOGHOUSE

I don't know if it's just me over reading it, but when I first read that tweet it kind of had patronizing, participation trophy undertones to it. I am sure it was well meaning and coaches speak, but to hear from Matt Mckillop, who is not a good coach at all, say that we're getting "better and better every game" is like hearing the kid picked second to last for flag football during recess try and console the kid who was picked last.

Some here may disagree with my viewpoints on several things I post, but I always try to be genuine and call things as I see them. And with regards to this tweet, if I was Mooney and saw this response from a terrible coach and nepotism hire Matt Mckillop, who has only been in the A10 for 3 years and done absolutely nothing of relevance, make a comment that we're playing "better and better" after beating us at home with essentially 2 players and after we have lost the last 5 games in a row, it would rub me the wrong way.

This is the kind of comment I would expect a parent make to their 4 year old child after their rec league team went winless for the season, while handing them capri suns and orange slices. Again, probably me over reading it but just the vibes I got.
The McKillops always had a bro-mance thing with Mooney. So go figure.

but does anything rub Moon the wrong way? Not that I notice. This does have a bit of a patronizing pat on the head feel by a less experienced coach. Even factoring in coaches talk each other up, so it can be reciprocated back when needed.

Moon used to have some grit even tho he looks like the quintessential ivy leaguer. think his dad drove a bus. if so likely born w some grit. from grit to silver spoon. tho i admittedly can't speak well on his upbringing. he didn't lose it at Princeton either, not with Pete Carril as your coach. he lost it here imo. had it once with the cup your mouth f bombs. I've sat very close enough at a few games u could tell. but he let himself get emasculated by UR for job security. they want their image. now u could say it was smart by Moon.

but we've tried to tell u a few times student17 this is what rewarding mediocrity regularly will do. another byproduct. grit is long gone. some can keep that grit. other lose it. To me Moon is in the latter category. So even if this was patronizing, it rolls right off Moon. he won't feel disrespected. why...coach for life...status quo...gotta coach my son here.

he gets his ass beat year after year by his next door rival, it's embarassing there is literally no other way to describe, but have u ever seen him upset about it. & if that doesn't rub u the wrong way nothing will.

I think everyone would agree that having grit is a good quality to have in a coach, but does it need to be demonstrated in a certain way? I don’t think it needs to be this exaggerated display of f bombs behavior. His behavior in that Charlotte game cost us. The technical he had against Louisiana Tech earlier this year cost us too. Sure, may not have lost us the game but not timely at all. When I see Hurley at UConn curse over every call, I don’t consider that grit but rather childish behavior. I want a coach that is cool and calm under pressure but has that controlled passion when needed to motivate the team.

I think Roussell embodies those qualities which is why I think he is the best coach at UR right now and may go down as our best coach ever if he keeps this up another 5-10 years. Mooney is not like that compared to Roussell, but I don’t think it’s fair to say he got emasculated.

I would definitely say last year's team had grit and we pulled out a lot of close games. The 2022 team had a lot of grit too. Mooney and the team deserve credit for that. I think this year’s team has fight and grit too, but we just aren’t good enough where it can make up for our lack of talent compared to other A10 teams.

I don’t disagree with any of this, and it also shows where we are as a program. A bad nepotism hire is “there, there-ing” our 20-year basketball dictator instead of the other way around. That should be all the evidence we need to identify our true standing in the league. Humbling to say the least.

It would just be nice once to hear Mooney say something like “I respect vcu, they’re a very good program, and I’m sick and tired of losing to them. We’re working incredibly hard to change the way this series has gone.” That’s not hard. Sometimes you need to put out a message like that publicly, not just in the locker room (assuming he does say stuff like that in the locker room).

I’ll take “things Mooney would never say under any circumstances in his entire life” for 1000 Alex.

Yes, grit can show in many forms. It does not have to mean cursing. The mouth cupping was just 1 example. There r others. Fwiw I’ve never blamed Moon for that Charlotte game it was basically over after that call & we weren’t advancing further w that team anyway imo. I also say emasculated bc it’s been reported an edict came down from UR admin to restrain his sideline language etc. That it was offending the blue hairs. Whether true or not idk but lot of circumstantial evidence. Graduating in 2017 u may lack some context.

Also I’d love to have calm & cool under pressure. Is that why u r always supporting more extensions? If you’ve watched his endgames for 20 years he’s not that. I’d also expect a calm cool coach to know the ncaa rules.

And we’ve definitely had some gritty players. But nobody would call our style of play that. That comes from the top. Fluidity. & I have zero issue with fluidity if u r successful with it enough which we r not. Maybe fluidity is why nobody in our program from coaches to players to admin cares about being bullied by vcu.

He wants a coach that is calm and cool under pressure and also wants another 20 years of Moonie.

I have lost count of the number of games we lost after being up by 5-10 with ~5 minutes to go. That is the opposite of calm and cool under pressure.

Make it make sense.

I think if Mooney went from sippy cup to a Big Gulp of Mountain Dew it would be a major step in the right direction on the "grit factor"

Maybe cook up some meth on the sidelines.
