Top A-10 assistants

This was a really good and interesting read. Thank you for sharing!

In all honesty - I don't know much about A10 assistants, but I find it hard to believe Jenkins and Jones are up there - even in the top 10. Jones is by default because he has stayed the longest. Jenkins - feel like he left, went to Princeton - didn't do well there, and then came back to UR when position opened and Mooney is loyal to his people. Not saying these guys are bad assistants - but when I think top assistants, I think guys that be considered for head coaching jobs soon - and not sure I see that with them. Not yet at least.

I think you have to consider the actual pool. Its Top A-10 assistants, not Top College Basketball Assistants. Not many A-10 Programs are going to have the cache to have head coach ready assistants. Power schools yes, but not so much for a conference like the A-10. So the Top Assistants is going to be relatively weak group compared to Top Assistants overall. Just like the All A-10 team isnt going to be as good as the All-America team etc. Consider there are probably 75 or so P6 schools with multiple assistants each and then a whole host of other midmajor conferences too. Thats a lot of coaches who just aren't eligible for best in the A-10 status. Considering all that i think they are probably slotted about right.

Most probably don't know a lot about A10 assistants but isn't that why Goodman did a poll on at least 20 A10 coaches primarily assistants to determine it from those that would know? Mooney does not hire the long in the tooth outsider asst. coach, something I would have supported. But I'm also not sure what qualifies your characterization of Jenkins not doing well at Princeton. They were solid enough but the dominant Princeton of the 1990s was a long time ago. Also Jenkins was selected for 2020 TopConnect, formerly Villa 7, which identifies the top assistant basketball coaches in the country and connects them with mid-major athletics directors. But noted he would have not made Traps list based off, by your own admission, virtually nothing.

Jenkins is a good recruiter. He’ll be a head coach one day. Jones, not sure.

You’re starting to come around by just saying not sure considering your opinion of him on years past.

Jones was our “D-coordinator” last season with the transition to the new defense FWIW. He’s a good coach. Wouldn’t be shocked to see either on the short list for some lower conference HC jobs assuming we have another good season next year.

I'm willing to give Jones the benefit of the doubt that all those years, he was trying to get Mooney to change his defense but it was falling on deaf ears. :D

I would not expect an A10 assistant to get a move up in jobs for head coach positions. An A10 assistant will either take over for the current head coach if he leaves for a bigger job OR take the route of McGeehan and take a job in lower level division, see if you can have success there and then move up.
