Toledo NIT

Toledo says they have two starters out too. But nothing about it in their Ohio game or any news that I see since...

your opinion questions a player's character. you have no idea what he's thinking. if you're just throwing baseless conjecture out, expect to be called on it just like I get called for being too positive.

In my opinion not baseless but feel free to question whatever you like. In my opinion your baseless positivity enters fantasy land conjecture.

urmite, I believe he is talking about Komagum (complete non-factor since 12/20) and Adu who hasn't played all season. Don't know why he would need to post that.

UR can win the game. Coach needs to adjust. Toledo can score with anybody and once-upon-a-time the Spiders too. With injuries I don't see UR getting into a running match with them and coming out on top. Toledo small team with little depth. SLOW THE GAME DOWN. Go inside with Cayo. Set up plays getting as many shots for others inside. Try to get them in foul trouble. They have all their guns loaded and UR doesn't. Make the most of your ammo.

I think you are right. Don't know why they were referenced as "top players" a couple of times, without naming them...

Hoping for Sals coming out party. I will turn off the TV if Grace gets more minutes while giving up boards and easy points

did I misunderstood your post? I thought you meant that you really didn't think Francis was too hurt to play. he was just choosing not to play. if that's not what you meant then I apologize.
if it is what you meant, then what was that opinion based on?

Just send out next year's team. No Golden or Francis that equals 28 points a game. Toledo averages 81 points a game. I dont see how we survive this. Need Burton and the bench to contribute a lot with points. I have no clue where the points are coming from? I guess someone from the crowd will help this futile approach?

You read what you wanted it to read. Another half to it. No need for apologizes to me about anything here. It's all good Sman and just want the Spiders to be successful (make the NCAA tourney)

The Toledo game is the type Tarrant excelled at ... facing what is a stronger opponent without Grant and Blake. Tactical adjustments, running clock, changing pace, changing defenses out of time outs, using the bench to exploit mismatches, relentlessly pushing the ball into the paint seeking points or a foul at a minimum and getting the stronger opponent in foul trouble. From that era, the games against Navy with David Robertson are prime examples of how it is done.

Hope I'm wrong, but little in 16 years leads me to believe this type approach is in our coach's arsenal.

Still always a hopeful fan. Still believing somehow we can this done. GO Spiders!

Yeah...I haven’t seen any mention on these boards about Sherrod or Crabtree being out. No excuses here...

Might be only the NIT but can't wait hopefully for a StL rematch without both GG and Blake. I'll never bet against the Spiders again! The books probably made a 99% profit on this one.

He got smoked because Toledo couldn't buy a shot. Winning this game only keeps Mooney around.
St.Louis knows a lot more about us. So don't get too excited about the next game.

No sweating this one, you got smoked by a Mooney special.

Toledo could have easily quit too and maybe didn’t care about this game at all. The nit is all about who is more interested in being there.

I am no expert but it appears to me our team played pretty darn hard for one which had quit on the coach and had nothing to play for.

I thought the same thing Woody. But where was that sense of urgency, hustling, diving after balls, when they were losing AT home to St Joseph and later against Duquesne? Where has all that fire been since pretty much every game since and including St. Bonaventure?

I have no idea. Maybe guys who didn't play as much during the season had something to prove tonight, and proved it. That Grace guy (I can't watch a lot of games on the West Coast) who gets universally panned looked pretty decent tonight.

When you get to be an old codger like me, I prefer to enjoy the moment and feel good for our players. I am NOT including you in this group, but life has sucked enough the past year without looking under every rock to find a negative in a positive.

I am shocked, to be honest. After the first few minutes, I thought we might lose by 25. We looked inept and they couldn't miss. I don't even really know what exactly happened in the second half, but we seemed to play with a lot more confidence. That was a different version of Gilly than we've seen almost all year. For better or worse, he is a different player when Blake is playing than when he isn't. Tonight, he was driving the lane like days of old. I missed that stuff. Sal and Grace performed as well as I have ever seen them perform. It's impressive to beat a team like that going away after being down 10 and lacking our two leading scorers.

Toledo,on a good day,is a lower tier A10 team.Doesn't say much about the MAC.
I think the one- and two-and-dones have really hurt mid-majors like the MAC. There's so much more turnover, guys they used to get because the Big Ten teams were full can now go to Big Ten schools because they turn their rosters over every two years.

Or when a successful MAC coach leaves (Hurley, Oates) to a P5 job he takes half his roster/recruits with him.

JFC. Toledo looked pretty damn interested in the first half.

Minus two starters and we came from way behind to win an NIT game. Enjoy the moment.
I learned a lot about geography in this game.

Richmond is to Toledo as Miami is to Richmond. 😁

I refuse to enjoy being in the nit and I suggest others have the same attitude. This is what’s wrong with our fan base.

I totally agree with that. Toledo would have a hard time competing in A10. They are a small team and play finesse ball. They are far from a physical team, and that played well for us. They looked to me like a poor man's version of Davidson...far from Davidson's quality. I believe they were 21-8 going into the game. The MAC must be weak. I don't think we beat them on a bad night for them. With GG & BF we probably would have blown them out.

Congrats to our team for a good win. They fought hard and deserved the win. The one thing that concerned me is nothing new - Toledo (even as a short team) got too many second chance points - especially in the second half. Sometimes we had 2 guys to their 1 on the boards, but Toledo scrapped for rebounds. This is a long term problem for us, and I hope one day it will be corrected.

Up next either St L or Miss St. My guess is St L, and St L presents a much more physical match-up for us. It will be a much different game than last night. I'm guessing GG is done for the year???? Is BF day to day?

Good win for the team!!!!

Mooney improves to 3-0 in first-round NIT games, and 3-0 in round-of-16 NIT games, all in the same night!
#overachiever

Next up, his 2-0 record in second-round NIT games goes up against his 0-2 record in NIT quarterfinals.🤯

fun game to watch, especially if you showed up a little late! those early minutes were tough.

our bigs certainly exceeded expectations. Sal was great. I know ... fouls. but while we wanted Golden to avoid foul trouble, it's ok for Sal to be aggressive. they only credit him with 1 blocked shot but he affected others. he also worked almost exclusively inside and he looked great doing it. he's not a perimeter offensive player. keep him focused on the block.

Grace's strong 2nd half run was one of the keys tonight. who'd have thought? like Koureissi, his best work was on the inside. that's where we want him. not always the pick & pop. he actually has inside moves. just rarely uses them.

the young guards are going to be good, especially defensively. and that was a huge 3 by Goose. fun game. glad we got the chance to have fun and play well.

oh, and Kulju's euro bench enthusiasm was legendary. that needs to live on.

Team played hard, young guys stepped up, bench was into it...which is why you get totally baffled when the opposite seemed to be the case against St. Joes and Duquesne when we still conceivably had something really big to play for (I'll let the board debate how big the NIT is). Good for the players last night. FWIW, I don't think his players have ever quit on Mooney...he just doesn't get consistent winning results (See the vote of support immediately after the billboard and then losing the next 3-4 games or this year's veteran laded preseason #1 A-10 team).

Spoken like an entitled brat with no actual life experience. Cheers.
Nothing good comes out of winning the nit. All we would get if that happened would be a stupid banner that means nothing in the robins center and probably another extension for Mooney. This is not where the preseason favorite in the A10 should be. Strive for better. Sadly this is what many fans on here think were capable of and are ok with it.
