To Zone or not to Zone?

The 10-19 record doesn't represent the talent level of this starting 5. i believe CM has coached them down to it. Like Philly posted, these 5 lack the ability to guard anyone individual. Believe CM not going to zone ASAP after dismal start to season was his biggest mistake on getting the most out of this starting 5. Maybe still not good on defense, but zone would cover up some individual flaws. Spiders are small and have no bench. So zone creates no one-on-one down low mismatches while keeping starters out of foul trouble.

The team TIRED crutch from no bench I lol at cause CM had options to lessen that, one of which was going full time to a zone. Another option would be slowing the pace of play from an offensive standpoint. And absolutely no full court pressing.

The Cuse gets by every year hardly using their bench. And of course UR's zone won't have the long armed defenders that Boeheim gets, but can it be any worse than the defense they have been using. Last 5 years their average bench usage ranking was 346th with subs getting 19.44% of game minutes. Spiders number this season is 23.1%.

Offensively look at Bo Ryan's last 5 years at Wiscy. Deliberate offensive play rank averaged 328 during that time with tempo number at 59.2. Spiders are at 68.4 for 2018 so far. Also Wiscy bench minutes average rank is 312th for that period at 22.8%.

What am saying here is a simple strategy adjustment that I believe CM could have went to this year along with possibly incorporating it more beyond. UR can't offensive rebound and play defense, so just get the best shot possible within 30 seconds. Right now UR misses too many so why give the opponent more possessions to score. I still believe this 5 is a BETTER than average offensive unit. More set plays for specific players in their best area to score and less CM motion offense.

I know, boring as hell basketball, but I just want to see as many Ws as possible. No style points for me. Like Oldie posted, just tell KF and GG, no 3PTAs unless up against the shot clock. And if he was a good coach, these two wouldn't be caught in that predicament. Go Spiders and PLEASE GO CM!

Agreed, SJ. We pretty much bottomed out defensively during that 5-game losing streak, when we were giving up 85 or 90 points a game. on average. It's not like we were going to give up 150 playing zone, so might as well see what happens. Especially as often as we get killed by wide-open threes. At some point I would rather force a team to beat us inside, or prove it can make threes over a zone.

Can't/won't rebound. Can't really play good defense. Why not go retro Paul Westhead style? Oh wait........no bench either. Dang!
