Wide receiver Tyler Wilkins of L.C. Bird has made a commitment to Richmond, Skyhawks coach David Bedwell said.
Wilkins had 972 receiving yards this season, the most in the Richmond area. He had 11 touchdowns and helped the Skyhawks win their third consecutive state championship. He was named second-team All-Metro.
Wilkins didn't think an offer from Richmond would come, Bedwell said. The university told him he was second in line at the wide receiver position. If the No. 1 player didn't commit, the spot belonged to Wilkins. But the player at the top of Richmond's list did commit to the Spiders, and Wilkins thought his chance with UR was gone.
A few days later, a spot opened at another position that Richmond's coaches hadn't anticipated. A Richmond coach called Wilkins, offered the place to him, and Wilkins took it.
