Time to support the players and team?

So help, me. The first time Mr. Christopher Mooney blows a game this season, I am going to flip the billboard on. And I will not be swayed to take it down this time. When it goes on, it stays on for 2 months straight.
I do wish our players the best, and the best would be a coaching change.

You're being ridiculous. Of course the message board has no bearing whatsoever on scheduling, coaching, the level of effort that the kids put in, their shot selection, what defense we play, etc. But, conversely, of course it DOES has some level of effect on the "atmosphere" around the program--the players, recruits, recruits' parents, players' parents, coaches, and our play by play people have all either explicitly or obliquely referenced the "chatter" or the "outside voices" or whatever other turn of phrase they used.

So, again, I personally think it is a worthy cause for the people on this board to make an effort to create a strictly positive "atmosphere" in the short time between now and the beginning of the season, as a show of solidarity.

So where are we going to vent when the frustrations build again??? I can't do it at home with the wife...I want to continue sleeping with her. Seriously, I do get what you're saying kneepad. But I can't believe that any recruit had decided to enroll at Richmond, then changed his mind because of things said on a message board. They might even appreciate the passion of some here that refuse to accept a losing tradition year after year. When I talk with friends...many former season ticket holders...the apathy about our basketball and football programs runs deep. In my humble opinion, this is far worse than loud voices complaining about a broken system. It's hard to believe that 10 years ago we were coming off a national championship, #1 ranking, and in the middle of a 17 game winning streak in football; then followed that up in men's basketball with two NCAA appearances and a Sweet 16.

Do that and you guarantee no coaching change.

It is a new season. Lets let it be a blank slate and once there are things worth criticizing that is the time to criticize them. Right now we are 0-0 and as divisive as things have been for years at least this season we all have a glimmer of hope, even if it is small.

If our administration makes decisions based upon a billboard vs. the product and results we put forth on the court, we truly are screwed. But I guess they would at least be making a decision on something, which is better than not making a decision at all.

#HireMooney - to go up when all those P5 schools come to town.

Oh, wait...

Well, at least for the BC game.

How about this for a billboard?

Everyone on the Richmond message board knows this is going to be a spectacular year for our men's basketball team. All dissenting opinion has been crushed (that means you comrade) just as our team will crush our opponents.

I've got no skin in the Mooney game. I just understood we were keeping him ... unless one of the big talkers on this board also had a big wallet to pay him to leave. a school our size doesn't eat contracts at those numbers. if you think a big endowment changes that, then I don't think you understand endowments. and I didn't see anything to gain by publicly bashing the guy who I knew would still be here. that hurts the program. so I hoped he'd turn it around.

now we actually have an extremely competitive roster. I love the kids CM's brought in.

so I'm in wait and see mode. I'm not looking for him to fail so we replace him. I hope he wins like crazy this year. he may not have done enough since 2012 but he's done a terrific job building this current team.

I'm going to enjoy this season. some here probably can't enjoy it unless Mooney's fired. and that's too bad.

S-man agree with majority of your post. Think however that those who think Mooney should not be retained have reached that conclusion because of frustration with our lack of on court success and not because of any personal animosity toward our coach. There has been preseason optimism many years. Is higher this year because of our personnel and changes in style of play exhibited in practice. Don't know any Spider fans who would not enjoy or desire a successful season.

The only suggestion I was supporting is that we put a pause on venting frustrations about past seasons, past errors, past recruiting, past games, past etc., and support THIS team, at least until they give us a reason to open up the vent again.

The question was asked how long a grace period, and I think spiderman, in all his truther-dom, said "one game". I agree. If we lay an egg, again, on opening night, then go for it.

I agree with why they've reached that conclusion. not dancing in a long time is tough, and the last two years were awful. hard to argue.

but while I know every Spider fan wants a winning program, I think there are a lot who will be unhappy if we win too much this season if it means we retain or heaven help us extend Mooney.

I am hopeful that we will win every game and the national championship this year, then erect a bronze statue of Mooney giving the double bird to haters, put it right in front of the Robins Center and make everyone kiss it on the lips every time they enter the building for any reason.

How long should we put our frustration on hold was asked. It takes a very short time to become irrelevant to the world outside of the Spider nation and that's where we are now. So we now have to earn our way back into relevency. I give it a 4 game grace period.

Probably some yes but I don’t think as many as you think. Been 8 years give me the NCAA every time. Hope he wins like crazy too. He only gets extension if we make ncaa. Almost inconceivable u could go 9 years without ncaa & get an extension at a top 10 d1 basketball league with our prior history & resources.

But agree w lot of what u said in prior post. I didn’t waste time worrying bout it prior to last year when it was first year I thought a firing possible. Based on roster structure it was very good timing imo. No need to be redundant & go into that further.

Also I don’t think u understand UR has $ outside endowments. They’ve made plenty of payouts to get out of things in past. Not talking athletics. Plus if we don’t owe Mooney less on a buyout by this point & owe the full balance of deal we r incredibly mismanaged. I don’t know why everyone assumes we would owe every last penny. I don’t know we might but that wouldn’t be my default assumption.

NCAA or bust

I’m comfortable stating that if the definition of “Win
too much” is not enough to not make the NCAA tournament but enough to “show improvement” then I would be one of those unhappy types.

I do not want us to fail, full stop. But if we end up in that middle ground where we hope that next year is our year we would just be propagating the same wishful thinking that’s failed to materialize for quite a while now.

I’m always pulling for the team though.

We may be one of the best practice teams in the nation. That might look pretty good on a billboard, and it wouldn't be entirely negative, would it?
