Would it be a viable strategy to zig while everyone is zagging here?
Simply recruit the best high school players available. Tell your existing players that if they enter the portal, their scholarship will end and that they will not be welcomed back in the event that they find lukewarm demand for their services. Or even if there is demand and they want to come back to be with their girlfriend.
We might end up with some really strong young players in the program. If we lose some experienced players, we lose some. Move on. Backfill with the best high school players we can find.
I'm sure we have a strategy currently ... but as a program, how about we communicate it publicly? It feels like we're in a sort of 'hope for the best' mode. You can't run any type of organization that way.

also stop red shirting your top players. there is no guarantee that anybody stays past 3 years
Agreed. How has Bob Chesney been so successful at Holy Cross (Patriot League), where you can't redshirt players?
Our school has a better academic profile and is a more favorable climate than Holy Cross. Let's do what Holy Cross is doing but do it better.

Prime RB Cameron Skattebo of Sacramento State in transfer portal and its HC “transfers” to Stanford.
Different sport but Tom Izzo has some seemingly wise words concerning the dangers of the transfer portal. Obviously there are instances where it is best for everyone but the sheer numbers have to be beyond those examples.
Hopefully all the kids are getting good advice and able to put themselves in good situations. Certainly we have seen positives & negatives.

No over reliance on trasfers for the Spiders, instead develop our own high school recruits.

Ya, he was injured a few games and lost a starting spot to Funderburk? Who of course is also gone. Would think he'd be in good shape for getting the starting spot back here next year.
Albany's certainly been a bit of a dumpster fire the past few years. Would think Gattuso should be on the hot seat, but they extended him through 2024 after last season. AD said the extension had been agreed to in 2019 but not finalized due to COVID, and he felt he had to honor the verbal agreement even though Albany had a bad short season in spring 2021 and last year. And now it's three in a row.

Checked back through the Game Notes for about six random games starting from early right up until last playoff game. Starter early and always in two deep, through whole season. Maybe knew some of the true freshman would pass him next year in the pecking order but cannot imagine he would not have seen the field a lot if not a starter, especially with Tyrek Funderburk leaving for what looks like his last year with an FBS school.
Guess it does not matter now, next man up.
Check the Defensive Pass Interference calls on grabbing the receiver after getting beat or TD’s given up and there lies the answer. It will be interesting to see if that follows him or was it coaching?
