Spiders vs. Elon

Our comers are just terrible. They could have thrown jump balls against our 5'3" D backs all night. I did not see a D back turn around and look for the ball once. JMU will drop 80 on this defense.

We blew it at every turn, stupid penalties, turnovers, short yardage 4 and 1 again (good grief, is that 5 times now), defense couldn't stop the run...... I really don't think Huesman's idea of 2 linebackers with an undersized D line is going to fly in the CAA, they just ran over us. Very, very disapointing loss at home, the season's not over but it doesn't look good.

the OL and DL had their butts kicked. Not looking good for the remainder, don' be surprised at a .500 season or worse. btw why run a spread defense against a running team, makes no sense, 299 rushing yards by one guy.

That was gross. They dared us to stop the run all night by running the same play over and over again but we couldn't stop it.

That and a bunch of self inflicted wounds again (drops, dropped puny, penalties) aren't what you expect from our team. Not to mention the inability to convert short yardage situations.

I agree, Lauletta had another 100 yards of balls dropped that were on the money. Stupid penalties (which we had last year too). Also we started drives on the 20 all night while the opponent was starting on the 35-40. Our starting running back is now on special teams, because out of the 100 guys on the sidelines no one can tackle.

We could be staring an 0 & 8 conference record in the face!

Another great post from FRS. Ridiculous.

That said, we just got pushed around by Elon (yes, they are improved) at home, but it's ELON. We have to find a way to get our O and D lines to play with an edge. Inexcusable to give up that amount of rushing yards to anyone. Let's use the bye week and focus on tackling and getting both our lines to push opponents off the ball.

I agree. Special teams are not so special. Our starting field position sucks. When is the last time we ran a kickoff back? Seems like I remember John Palazeti running one back agaist VMI in 1975. Lol.

I believe there has been an issue with his hip all season. Some times he works through it, some times he doesn't.

But I agree that decision and the 2 point conversion were the most surprising.

Disclaimer: I realize that the football coaches know more about this sport than I do. So here are my perhaps silly questions:
1 - Why don't we throw to our tight ends more?
2 - Why do we keep throwing the deep out over and over without running some slant routes or timing routes? Do we really think that our opponent isn't going to eventually jump that route (like tonight)?
3 - Elon from the kickoff through the end of the game looked like they came here to win the game and actually expected to win it.
4 - They ran through us like a knife through butter - running plays, special teams - and ALWAYS when they really needed it.
5 - Why didn't Deontez or Goodall or Collins run the ball on that 4th and 1 where Jay Palmer slipped?
6 - Kyle overthrowing about five long balls tonight is just a tough night - at least he wasn't underthrowing them for interceptions. We could have put the game out of reach. The big problem tonight was that Elon could have hung at least 21 more points on us if they didn't turn the ball over. They could have scored over 50 without much difficulty.
7 - Kentucky losing to Florida tonight was actually more awful to watch than our game. I guess that is something positive.

No need to throw in the towel. Let's be patient with the players and coaches. Once we make the expected improvements, we should be fine.

Got my tickets for the JMU game on Nov. 11. Let's back the kids and the coaches as they continue to solve problems. But if you run into any of the coaches this week, ask them why didn't throw to the tight ends more...

We had 580 total yards offense and scored 33 points. No excuse in losing that game. Though there were offensive issues, this loss falls squarely on the shoulders of the defense.
Plenty of contribution from the O (and special teams)to the loss. 4 turnovers. Couldn't run. Failed on crucial back to back 3rd and 4th and ones with the game on the line.

We were out physicalled at every opportunity on both sides of ball plain and simple. Unless it's an effort thing and I don't think it is, we are in trouble cause you don't fix that in a week or two.

Kick the PAT and the FG there and we are ahead. Might be a different night. The PAT was a bad call. Way to early to chase points. Coaching 101 and we had to know it was going to be high scoring so could go for 2 later if it turned out to be needed.

Jessie Williams ran a kickoff back for a TD against UNC in 1977 or 1978.

The last time we played at VMI we ran the opening kick off bsck for a TD.

I thought we were suppose to play faster, but it does not seem like that is the
case or not what I expected. Kyle tries to go 10- 15 yards or more on most of
his throws. I wish he would use his running backs more out of the backfield.
Our Receivers are good blockers and our RBs seem to be hard to bring down
in the open field. This would maybe force the DBs to play up more, opening up
the home run throw.

I never meant to imply the offense was perfect, Offensively, there is plenty to work on. The run game was atrocious, turnovers will always kill you, but it never should have come down to those third and one and fourth and one plays. If I told you before the game our offense rolls up nearly 600 yards and scores 33 points against Elon, who thinks we're losing? The offense needs tweaking but did more than enough to win the game. The defense needs to be completely blown up and reassembled in the next 2 weeks.

The issues on defense are not completely shocking as we haven't been a top notch defensive team in years. The guys work hard but we don't have a lot of size on the line.

The lack of our running game is what has been an unpleasant surprise to me as we have been a strong running team. I'll be very curious how we adjust in the bye week. We're not getting much push on the line and the backs seem to have trouble even when there are holes. Not just talking short yardage, but from every scenario we're not getting much on the ground.

I think that was Ed Kreilis

On short yardage why not 10 blockers and a direct snap to Mancuso attacking at the weakest point of the defense???

Take the fumbles and interception along with two missed steps and we win by three scores
Take Elons misques away and they win by three scores. Football is the next play, but I understand your point. Two touchdowns in lieu of field goals would have sealed the win. Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Every game.

Agree with I-M that UR may not have the personnel to effectively run Huesman's defense. Lacking in size to play against conference competition. Furman's destruction of Colgate a good indication of UR's deficiencies. #1 is too short and NEVER turns to find the ball. Special teams on kickoffs are just miserable, again. Cannot do much as personnel is what it is but, surely, changes can be made in kickoff schemes. Going for 2 in third quarter was unwise but not reason for defeat. Cannot see huge improvement this year but won't go 0-8. It is Russ' first year and he is playing with talent not recruited for his defensive scheme. Lack of running game is really bothersome as is play calling in short yardage situations. After season may have to rethink staff and/or philosophy on both sides of ball. Coach is here for more than this season so some patience is required. Agree with most that disappointment is big but not ready to give up on year. Am ready to give up on kickoffs and just kick out of bounds.

In regards to the defensive scheme, did Russ run the same 4-2-5 defense at Chattanooga? When Russ was here previously as defensive coordinator didn't he run a 4-3 base defense? I know offenses have evolved over the last 9 years, but that defense was dominant and seems to be a better scheme in the CAA.

Russ will make adjustments. He admitted he needs to be better and also called out his defensive coaches and players. He flat out said he doesn't think we have our best 11 on the field on defense. (Now, why we haven't figured that out in week 4 is another question)

To his credit, Mainsah owned it as well. He missed the critical tackle on third down in the backfield which would have forced a punt. He's undersized against a hard runner, but has to make that play - with help.

I don't have a problem with going for it on 4th down late. What is a problem is either Lauletta or Palmer appeared to turn the wrong way and that seemed to cause the slip. After Elon called a time out, there is no reason for our offense to not all be on the same page. As Russ said in his post-game, Palmer would have had the first down if he hadn't slipped.

We should have gone for it on 4th and inches on our first drive - we were in Elon territory and it set the tone making us look scared. You could see the Elon sideline get fired up from that decision alone. They got back to essentially the line of scrimmage on their very first offensive play.

There is no excuse for the Line Judge to not call the blatant offensive face mask right in front of him on Elon's last drive. That sealed the game.

I am glad VT is providing so much fodder to disqualify himself from ever walking the sidelines at UR.

Can anyone tell me why we didn't have Keels on their giant receiver? Nothing against Jordan, but that was a horrific matchup that they exploited twice to perfection for two TDs. There's possibly a good reason for not switching, which is why I am asking.

Elon shut out Albany 6-0 to go 2-0 in conference. If UR doesn't win the conference, I'd rather see Elon win it instead of the Dillweeds!

Albany found a way to reduce Elon's run attack. What a low to no offense game. It'll be interesting to see what we do against Albany next week.
