I am currently listening to Hardly Working on espn 950 right now and heard that the Spider Sportsline comes on at 5:30. I am thinking about maybe callin in or writing in a difficult question for Chris Mooney. We need to show our displeasure as fans with this regime. I encourage many of you to do the same.

My question I texted in was twisted all around by Bob Black and Mooney still danced around it with his answer. Good God this program is so soft.

What did you text in?

Mooney went on record that we'll have the best schedule in the A10 next year. Pretty bold statement considering VCU had the #2 NC SOS in the country this year. If he's back next season, let's see if anyone holds him accountable for it.

Yeah, he can promise the moon and stars at this point. "We're playing at Duke five times!"

He's not going to be around to care either way.

he said he thinks we'll play the best schedule in the A10, if not then one of the best 2 or 3 schedules in the A10. there's a little leeway.

this year wasn't going to be an at-large season even if Nick was healthy. next year I think we have the roster to play a better schedule.

I texted in word for word; "Coach could you please tell us as fans some concrete goals as a program? We are tired of hearing the word compete. We want to know what your actual goals are for the season". Of course Bob changed around the question to just; "what are your goals this season", and Mooney still danced around it and said that he doesn't share goals publicly. I think that says all we need to know.

Reading these recaps Mooney sounds emboldened to me. Like a guy who knows he's coming back. Like a guy that helped pick the AD with Queally. Like a guy that saw JtHardt not even be able to dismiss the womens coach last year.

Just wait for the question that I ask him next week on the Sportsline. There will be no dancing around it for Mooney.

Precisely, Hardt can pull up game film from every year, he doesn't need to slouch around at Richmond to know moon and Schaefer should have been canned last year.
TRIUMVIRATE RULES suckers.

Some pieces seemed to fall in place last night. This year was written off due to “unexpected” rebuilding and next year is going to be the “prove it” year. Nick’s injury added credence to this plan. The only issue will be if there are more unforeseen circumstances with the current players.

So the FMM crowd is just wasting effort this year.

Personally, I am just looking for a few home surprise wins. Of course, that is going to be hard to come by since there is little fan support in the Robins Center. I’ll be there and rooting loudly for the home team.

For the record, I think the greatest crime is the amount of money Mooney is being paid. Too bad he isn’t like the Colorado St football coach who turned down an increase in pay due to his own poor performance (granted this was a token gesture since the coach is making an even more insane amount of money).

Look, Mooney is gonna due a whole bunch of "turd polishing" for the rest of the year. That is what he does. Instead of taking accountability, he makes excuses, deflects, and points to shiny objects in the future.

Mooney is doing all he knows to do, which is spin. I don't think there are any tea leaves to be read by that. Mooney is completely predictable, he has very few cards in his arsenal and he plays them predictably other time.

And yes, the complete wild card is player transfers at the end of the year. They are coming my friends.

Yes, how "lucky" Nick must feel to blow out his knee according to the #bestclassever plan.

There is so little fan support because of the 8 years of Mooney ball since the last tournament team. That's an eternity in today's world of collegiate athletics. I don't blame any fan or alum for finding better things to do with their time at this point. Our fans are dying for an excuse to get excited but instead we trot out a ridiculously easy OOC schedule (clearly designed for Mooney to save his job) and then we lose a bunch of those games in embarrassing fashion. To make it clear I am not bashing any of the players. They are doing the best they can and it stinks for them to have to play in front of less than capacity crowds but there is no excitement in the program right now. Even Mooney's system is not fun to watch. So methodical and robotic. No rebounding, rarely any dunks except from our opposition. I really miss meaningful basketball in March.

I believe CM's contract runs three more years, 21/22. So next year we go say 15 and 14, or slightly above 500... does Mooney get an extension?

I have very little faith that Hardt will fire him before then.....but there is some tiny bit of hope.

Unfortunately I think you are right @I-M-UR. I wonder what the Robins Center will look like in a few years when we are going on a decade of not even making it to the NCAA's? Oh well. All is well. Wait till next year.

Do you think they'll do a big "10 year anniversary" presentation for the 2011 Sweet 16 team with Mooney still at the helm in 2021 and the barren wasteland of nothingness since 2011? Good Lord, that would be pathetic.

Of course not. It's the absurdity of Nick's injury "adding credence to the plan."
Come on Broc. I didn't suggest that Nick's injury was fortunate at all. Just saying that as fate would have it, he was added to the "best class ever". Simply added to the "all in" next year theme that seems to have been established prior to this season.

I also know that it recently has always been about "next year" and I am not refuting that either. My point is that it is becoming crystal clear we are going to finish this season with Mooney and we will have him at the helm next year as well.

Of course you didn't. Mooney is the one pushing the #bestclassever narrative as if it was by design.

The "true" Juniors in next year's #bce are Verbinskis/Gilyard/Cayo/Kulju/Gaitley.

I agree with you. Everything he and Hardt are saying points to:
  • He's coming back next year
  • It's his "or else" year

When Mooney comes back next year Richmond basketball will have officially reached "it's a joke" stage.

My guess is we will go around 13-18, or something in that neighborhood. Considering the mess from last year, I don’t know how an AD could reasonably defend retaining this staff with a performance in that range against what can only be described as a pudding soft schedule.

It’s pure insanity.

Mooney is the one pushing the #bestclassever narrative as if it was by design.

he's pushing it? did he say that more than once, and did he say anything about it being by design?
I thought he said next year's junior class may be our best class ever. that's all. and he's arguably right. no idea why you have to create fake news that he said more than that.

Oral roberts, Hampton and Longwood. Delaware and Jacksonville state all home losses. Being mediocre and being competitive is all that matters. Going to be eight years of watching VCU go to the NCAA tournament. They are going again this year.

Who here other than 4700 honestly thinks next year's team will be better than the one we had with TJ and ShawnDre as seniors, Khwan as a sophomore and Buck and Sherod as freshmen? I don't. And that team, predictably, missed the NCAAs. Why would we expect anything different next year?

We will not make the NCAA tournament until Mooney is gone. That is a fact. If we get a new coach next year then I think we actually have a shot of getting back there. Also as someone on here said before don't discount the possibility of players transferring out after this year because if we keep Mooney IT WILL HAPPEN. What do you have to say about that ? I guess keeping Mooney and as a result being competitive and contending for the NIT is good enough for you and the rest of the truthers.

He's said it more than once, yes. Not explicitly "by design," no. But he never mentions that "best junior class ever" is really 3 seniors & 2 juniors that just kind of fell together through an injury, a scary heart condition and a transfer. It's an unprovable axiom, anyway.

Not trying to create fake news; sorry. We're not a stupid fanbase.

I only heard it once, but ok if you say so.
I didn't get the sense he was trying to trick anyone into thinking he did some masterful job recruiting in the summer of 2016. just that next year's junior class is talented.

"You CAN'T fire me now, we are on the cusp of greatness" was deployed as a strategical preemptive strike to save the coaches job. Instinct and common sense makes this crystal clear to many.

One can choose to be willfully blind. Some may actually not be able to see thru the smokescreen. Fine. Because a few people can't see the truth doesn't mean that the truth isn't present.

If one wishes to argue the 12-win (last year) and 12-15-win (this year against a weak schedule) as the "best class ever" ... they are free to do so. In the real world, many see no credible evidence to support the narrative.

Mooney's not going anywhere. Start mentally preparing yourself now for that announcement in March.

And he made that comment about next year, while at the same time never answering JOC question about what he would say to the fans or ever addressing anytime what his goals for the team are this year or next year.

You can go to any leadership training class and understand in the first 5 minutes that what Chris is doing is the EXACT opposite of what a leader should be doing.

It is a prime example of really bad leadership, deflection, avoidance, and then throwing out some broad immeasurable goal (like #bestclassever), so you never have to take accountability.

Homer has vision while the rest of the world wears bifocals.

he made a statement that you think he only made to save his job. as if that would do it. fine. whatever. you say it's a fact so who am I to argue.

do you disagree with the statement?

next year's junior class. Golden, Gilyard, Cayo, Sherod and Francis. could that be the most talent we've had in a class? take into consideration that ...
I AM NOT SAYING MOONEY HAS TO COACH THEM.

that's irrelevant to the statement, which I happen to agree with and I get blasted for agreeing with.

I agree next years junior class does have a chance to be very good. However I'm not user that they are better than the junior class of Anderson, Harper, Geriot, and Smith. That group was a lot further along at this point in their careers as compared to next years junior class. Also if next years class is coached by someone else they have the chance at the NCAA's being their ceiling, however with Mooney their ceiling is Nit, which is not good enough. The nit may be good enough for all you truthers but it is not good enough for the majority of us!

I want to preface by saying that I do believe we have a lot of talented players on our roster next year. However, my thinking is that claiming "we have talented players coming back" shouldn't be a sufficient reason to keep the coach. If anything, it should be a good reason to bring in another coach who can utilize our players talents more effectively.

We have Gilyard, Golden, Sherod, Cayo, and Francis coming back next year, among others who may potentially have a break out year. With the exception of Francis, we had the other 4 core players for 2 years now that led to a 12-20 record (while many were Freshmen and Sophomores. Keep that in mind) but then this year lost to Longwood, Wyoming, and Hampton while Sherod's unfortunate injury occurred, and finished below .500 OOC. So while many of us agree that we have talented players on our roster, what does it say when we lose the games we had last year and this year? To me it says that they have not been managed properly, the offensive and defensive scheme that they are in is not working well, and that they are not being put in the most effective ways to utilize their skill set to help us win. This fundamentally lies with the coaching staff and it is not going to suddenly differ by adding Francis (another talented player) next year.

At the end of the day, while having talented players is very important part to winning, the other important component is coaching. If Mooney recruited all 0 star recruits and made the NCAA tournament once every 3 or 4 years I wouldn't argue that we need to get more talented players because the results speak for themselves. However, if we do have talented players and yet still cannot make the NCAA tournament on a relatively consistent basis, then we have to consider the other half of the equation which is that the coaching needs to be re-evaluated.

hard to argue against an Anderson and Harper class, but I'll try.

Anderson was already a star.

but Harper wasn't a monster until his senior year. as a junior he was just OK. 10.6 ppg and 5.4 rpg, shooting 34.4% from 3. the next year he was ridiculous.

Geroit as a junior wasn't himself. 6.8 ppg and 4.0 rpg, 22.5% from 3.

and Smith was a role player seeing 15 mpg and scoring 2.7 ppg

No, I don't think this class is suppossedly the best ever. Here is why:

I would still take the Anderson, Harp, Geriot, Smitty class and here is why:

1. Defense: All of those guys could and would defend. Golden and Sherod are sub-par defenders, which detracts from their really good offensive abilities.

2. Toughness and heart: Geriot and Smitty were tough players and played with heart. Gilyard plays that way as well, but the rest of our team plays soft (that is not a criticism of their personal attributes but just how I see them play 0N THE COURT). They don't contest drives to the hoops, they get dunked on frequently, they aren't out there physically leading their teammates when they other team makes a run etc... Geriot would tag a guy in the nads at least once every other game just to show him whose boss. Was that dirty, yeah maybe a little, but man was it effective. Whoever had to guard Geriot knew they were leaving that game bruised and hurt.

3. Kevin Anderson: Guy is in our rafters for a reason. Gilyard and Golden might be the stars on this team, but Anderson is a legend at UR. He made every single guy on his squad so much better. We aren't hanging Gilly or Golden jersey in the rafters.

4. Athletic ability: Harp and Smitty could dunk on and over you. KA could make you look silly in any number of ways. That team also had Garrett as back up in the middle another really intimidating player. We have no one that is physically intimidating on this current group of players. That matters, a lot in my opinion.

The 2011 team would beat next years squad by double digits, nine out of 10 times.
