I want to preface by saying that I do believe we have a lot of talented players on our roster next year. However, my thinking is that claiming "we have talented players coming back" shouldn't be a sufficient reason to keep the coach. If anything, it should be a good reason to bring in another coach who can utilize our players talents more effectively.
We have Gilyard, Golden, Sherod, Cayo, and Francis coming back next year, among others who may potentially have a break out year. With the exception of Francis, we had the other 4 core players for 2 years now that led to a 12-20 record (while many were Freshmen and Sophomores. Keep that in mind) but then this year lost to Longwood, Wyoming, and Hampton while Sherod's unfortunate injury occurred, and finished below .500 OOC. So while many of us agree that we have talented players on our roster, what does it say when we lose the games we had last year and this year? To me it says that they have not been managed properly, the offensive and defensive scheme that they are in is not working well, and that they are not being put in the most effective ways to utilize their skill set to help us win. This fundamentally lies with the coaching staff and it is not going to suddenly differ by adding Francis (another talented player) next year.
At the end of the day, while having talented players is very important part to winning, the other important component is coaching. If Mooney recruited all 0 star recruits and made the NCAA tournament once every 3 or 4 years I wouldn't argue that we need to get more talented players because the results speak for themselves. However, if we do have talented players and yet still cannot make the NCAA tournament on a relatively consistent basis, then we have to consider the other half of the equation which is that the coaching needs to be re-evaluated.
