why the hell do we care? this isn't the VCU chat board, it's the UR chat board.

Can somebody fork over a few dollars for Monte Buckingham's OrangeBloods.com subscription?

in all probability, shaka is on broad street next year making $2.3 million.

Just read 20 minutes ago on Digital Sports Daily that Smart to Texas is a done deal; now just finalizing negotiations.

These are some of this "reporter's" greatest hits:

Yes, Ulla was eating up all the Marquette talk last year as well. I don't think Texas is big enough for Larry Brown, Webspinner and Shaka - so I think LB and WS will stay - with Havoc out. Shaka got so many goodies the last two years he is probably just meeting with his paid adviser (not an agent, not an agent

) and having a tough time figuring out what he can squeeze out of VCU this time.

brown will leave for another job soon, out of tejas, and i will be the only one here

I don't know why you wouldn't take the job...Austin, Big 12, one of the best athletic depts...seems a no brainer to me.

Because he is already at the epicenter of college basketball with the greatest fan base known to man. Tough to trade up from that.

RTD sports close to moving headquarters from Hanover County to Austin, Texas and several Richmond radio sports reporters have signed with either Border Media's 104.9 FM the Horn or Clear Channel-owned 1300 AM the Zone in Austin.

I hear Greg Burton bought a town house in Austin today!!! "No doubt about that" New show " Hardly Hookin' "

Isn't Shaka a weird choice for Texas? They have no problem getting into the NCAAs, but they have trouble actually winning games when they get there. Shaka has the same problem.

Final sticking point. Shaka is demanding the same Dean of Admissions title at Texas that he has at RPI.

Smart stays at vcu. If they raise student fees by $500 (32,000 students), vcu should be able to cover his new contract. Hey most of the students would be happy to pay as vcu was the only college that accepted them.

Shaka's wife was seen at Myrna's Boots & Bits today. Texas Roadhouse for lunch. :)

Losing Shaka will decimate the momentum VCU is currently enjoying. Their message board is blowing up with anger, denial, guilt, wallowing... Most of the same guys were heavily criticizing his coaching just 6 weeks ago....I almost feel bad for them.

one thing to keep in mind is the fact that schools like texas, alabama, etc. think that they can never be turned down once they are in discussions with a potential recruit, coach, what have you. the ego there, mostly fans, is unrealistic and they just assume that shaka is hooked and on board. would suggest that is wishful thinking on their part and would not be surprised at all if he remains in richmond, just like marshall is remaining in the fair city of wichita.

If Smart is visiting Austin a better chance he signs on but ..... thinking the Monson scenario again leaving a Zag team he created to go to Minny for over 1M and failing and now at LBST making 3-400K. Could be doing and making what Few is now if he stayed on with eventual pressure from fans but an NCAA bid in that conference is almost always likely.

With certain mid-major programs reaching status equaling the majors, why would coaches leave a secure job? Depends on how much money makes one happy and the size of their ego I guess. Marshall if I read correctly will get close to 3M staying WichSt while Bama offer was close to 4M. Wouldn't have taken me more than a minute to know I'm staying put too.

Now with Shaka I see a little difference in that Masrhall's track record is better than his and the crazy national hoopla around Smart at VCU last few years has worn thin with one-and-done tourny appearances. Don't think Broad St wants to pay a coach no matter who it is 3M for progress that wasn't shown when it mattered most.

If Shaka didn't have a great class coming in with enough talent still there, I think he would be gone already. How much of an increase if any he gets in pay if stays? Don't think close to Marshall and would Texas job double his pay?

I think the TX job was rumored to be 6 for $14M, so $2.3M annually. I think he's around $1.4-1.5 now...

Thanks. If that's the case than I would probably stay put. VerbalCommits has Texas with 2 spots open this year and 7 for 2016. Whoever goes there it will be that coach's team rather quickly.

The reports I saw were $14 million over 5 years, closer to $3 million per year. Hard to pass up that kind of coin.

My guess is that Texas would need to be around the $3 million mark to get Shaka's interest. He is making about $1.5 now and with this Texas negotiation and the fact VCU won the A10 tourney and made the NCAA tourney again - he is likely due another raise/extension.

Reports are saying the Texas AD is flying to Richmond to meet Shaka and talk with him and then hopefully get Shaka back to Austin tonight to see the facilities. If Shaka gets on that plane - I think its a done deal. If he stays in Richmond, then I think the negotiations were not enough.

If Billy Donovan leaves Gatorland for the NBA,Shaka would much rather be in Gainesville than Austin.UF would suit him much more than UT especially since he is familiar with that environment.Open collars and shorts vs Alligator boots and ten gallon hats.Big difference.

Espn just said Marshall got $3.3 mil for 7 years from Wichita State.
