Secret Scrimmage vs. ODU: 94-79 W

maybe not uncommon in a loss. but to be the only guy on the entire team with a negative +/- in a 15 point win when you shoot 8-8 and score 22 in 18 minutes?

So Blakney & Ceasar were scoreless outside that 18 minutes?

Not to get into the position debate, but wondering if we know what position or who Glou is playing with on the court? Is he coming in for Dusan, or is he coming in for Tanner - I guess would be my question?
If we subbed 5 in and 5 out, probably Dusan. But, I would hope we are working with a bunch of different lineups and the only in for out for stuff we do is with Walz and Beagle.

that's probably the starting lineup, but wonder if we're handing Dusan the start prematurely. if he's beating AP in a fair fight ... fine.
would like to see both to compare.
Fair question, but if looking at the 1st period in our scrimmage, our starters went 10-13 (6-9 from 3) and held ODU to 5-14 (2-7 from 3) and we outscored them 29-14. My guess is we stay with that 5 to start the season. Sure, it could be as simple as we made shots and they didn't, but I would want to run that 5 out there again opening night to see if it can happen again.

I think people are forgetting we have a transfer from UCONN and Michigan on our team. Imagine if either of these players, out of HS, were considering UR and UCONN and Michigan and they selected UR instead - we would be, and so would all the pre-season experts, ecstatic with that choice. So I expect some big things from them right away because even if they were not playing many minutes at their previous school - the practices were probably better than our games.

maybe. Zeb Jackson transferred from Michigan a couple of years ago and averaged 5 ppg his junior year at VCU.
his jump came a year later averaging 11.

we just don't know. AP certainly showed out offensively last scrimmage. if that's the guy he is, then he should probably be starting at forward with Tanner (who seems to have one spot locked up). but maybe Dusan is too good to beat out.

good problem to have.

I still find it interesting that our “walk on” averaged 49 seconds more than our Michigan transfer.

However, small sample size that didn’t count…

Autocorrect, why is size not a word?

The interesting thing about Dusan to me so far is that he only took 3s last scrimmage. Though he had a decent per game # of attempts from 3 in the Ivy, I had thought of him as having more of an off the dribble game with the 3s complementing that aspect, rather than the reverse.

took 6 3's and 7 2's per game last year. would have been #2 on our team in FTs taken, so he must drive a bit.

Agreed. The big schools have recruiting misses as well. I am really liking what I see from AP and think GW can be a player for us. But just because they were recruited by UConn and Michigan doesn't necessarily translate them into being big time players for us. And as was pointed out Graham got more minutes than GW. GW just got here though so he could be taking more time to acclimate to our style.

As Spider-Man said, this is a good problem to have. How many of you have seen the team play in person? I haven’t, from a distance I’m hoping that we can develop chemistry like last year.

For sure out of hs because we will never beat out Michigan or UConn. And ok UConn gets their flowers bc back to back champs & lots of nba draft picks. But Michigan was 8-24 last year and mediocre the year b4. Side note once Beilein players r gone it’s happened to every college he’s left. Do well with what he leaves u & declines from there. Would need to have a low opinion of high mid major ball to think Michigan practices were better than our games imo. We were certainly a better team last season. So I agree with 97 here. A deep bench player at power schools doesn’t automatically translate. Some have done well. Look at Greg Stevenson at Penn state. But I think he got time there. Others don’t. & that is bearing out as neither looks like a starter. That could change & they’ll contribute I’m sure. I hope they kill it but where they came from means little.

Right - we are not at practice, don't see the fit of how guys play in all aspects of the game. It's possible AP duplicates some skills (or deficiencies) of one or the other of Tanner/Dusan, where Moon wouldn't want both of them starting together. It's also possible that Tanner is playing really well in practice and scrimmages and is just winning the job by being a good player. Dusan comes with a track record of being able to score, which is something UR needs with all the question marks, so that alone is something that gives him an edge IMO.

Either way, I expect a lot of time for AP and hope he delivers. He can become a fan favorite I think.

I think practices more than scrimmages are where the rotation is formed.
while Tanner certainly played well in the scrimmages, Mooney's been talking him up since way before that. enough so that he started in both scrimmages.
it's not like years ago when teams just did skill work in the summer, and the 1st team practice was in October. these guys have been grinding since probably June. that's a lot of time to determine the rotation.

Can’t remember if I have posted this. I think I tried and it deleted. Anyway…
In the scrimmages combined…

Beagle 56% of center minutes Walz 44%

Forward minutes - Tanner 30.9%, Dusan 28.6%, AP 21.9%, Roche 18.4%

Guards - Hunt 38.3%, Tyne 31.4%, Graham 15.6%, GW 14.6% all with White out.

We didn’t get a who is “running with the 1s” update this summer!
