Saint Louis

Seen this formula for 15.5 years. Data show it works about 56% of the time. Rebounding has decided many games over that period. That's a problem.

All in on hoping the Spiders make the "formula" work against St Louis on Friday though!!!
My point is I don't think the rebounding battle will be what decides this game. SLU will probably outrebound us, but don't forget, Kentucky outrebounded us 54-31, and we still won by 12.

I saw one person refer to Travis Ford as a dirtbag, and now you have negative about him. I must be living
under a rock- why are you guys so down on a coach?

I want every opposing coach to get technicals so we go to the free throw line. That is not exclusive to Travis Ford.

I agree this can be a winning formula, but when its not working (they're hitting, we're not hitting, or other) you have to recognize what you are doing is not working and be able and willing to make adjustments mid-game
I guess, but a lot of times "adjustments" are as simple as making shots in the 2nd half that you missed in the 1st half. Sure, you can tweak a few things, but you also don't want to panic and change everything everytime you fall behind at halftime. But, yes, if a guy is hot from 3, you better get out on him, or if a guy inside is scoring at will, double him a few times. Also, there are always switches and rotation changes that happen that a lot of people might not recognize. I'm sure people on here will say otherwise, but we do make adjustments.

Great post Fan1. This is one of CM's glaring weaknesses. He is not a good in game coach. We have seen it time and time again. No adjustments. Not even his most ardent supporter can identify a single in game adjustment made in our last loss to LaSalle. So, to beat St Louis, we have to shoot the ball really well. We all know that Ford will try and make this game as physical as possible and his guys will try to get to the rim and go after offensive rebounds.
We played much better second half defense against LaSalle. They made layups and got some early 2nd half points, but from the 16:00 mark to the 6:00 mark they scored 4 points. 4 points in 10 minutes. We played more aggressively and forced turnovers, and closed quicker to take away their layups. What really hurt that game was we took the lead 59-57 with 6 minutes left, and made one of our next six shots. They made a few and retook the lead, and then made 12 foul shots in the final two minutes, giving them a 45 point second half that made it look worse than it was defensively. I think looking back, it was the first half where we were not aggressive enough, and maybe a step slow.

Making more shots is not a coaching adjustment. This seems to be Mooney's answer for a lot of things. Making more shots is just a wishful prayer unless their is a schematic adjustment to get guys in better positions to make more shots.

you're right. but I'm looking for even better shooting to cover up for the defensive issues. I think there's a better chance our guards start shooting better from outside than there is we become a better defensive team.

we're just not a great man to man defense team. we're forced to help too much. 6'7" Burton is the closest we have to a rim protector. and when teams drive and kick, they sure seem to make an impressive percentage of their open looks against us.

Offense, and getting people open shots, is not our issue. Even against a zone.
It might not seem to be, but it depends on how you look at it. I expect us based on our roster to be a much better offensive team than defensive. Our stats, metrics, etc. should favor our offense. So, when we actually play a great 10 minutes of defense and hold LaSalle to 4 points over that stretch to take a 2 point lead with 6 minutes left, our offense, what we are best at, needs to take over and win the game there. But, we had several empty possessions from the 6 minute mark.

It's like when a defensive team like Virginia, before they got all this offensive talent the last few years, would lose games in the high 50s, sometimes it was the defense that let them down.

If we just worked harder to maker every single shot we take, we wouldn't have to spend any time practicing rebounding. There, problem solved.

Must have posted it this in another thread. My line is Spiders -8. Spiders win by 8. Hammer that -1.5 with all available funds. Sell your Gamestop, liquidate your AMC, you will get a nice return. SLU will still be on the rusty side. Our players are sick of message board and twitter attacks , and are motivated like a big ol billboard just went up on 95.

Of course I have been wrong a couple times before, so only risk what you can lose.

Anyone know where I can find Ulla’s ranch?

You can always listen. By the way, we will be looking for your posts during the game.
We have a better chance of beating an all-time all-star team from the LA Lakers than winning this game tonight. In part because some of those players are dead or very old.

Hopefully Mooney makes one of his "adjustments" and we start hitting most of the shots we have been missing. Just messing with you VT! Go Spiders!

This team will go as far as Gilly and Grant will take it. Gilly's offense has been in a slumber, his shot is off to the point, where he doesn't even look for it half the time. Other teams know it. He is like Ben Simmons out there. All the talent in the world but he has become afraid to use it. We need Gilly to hit some 3 balls this game, probably score 15 points, and if he doesn't, I don't see us winning.

Grant is gonna have to play some interior D. If he finishes the game with 2 fouls like he normally does, that means that SLU is being given free reign inside Grant needs to make sure he has zero offensive fouls and use his 4 fouls to foul SLU hard and deny easy lay-ups and put backs at the rim.

Cayo, Burton, and Francis really just need to keep playing the games they have been playing. They are giving us the production I expect out of them on both ends of the floor and Burton is vastly exceeding it. Yeah, Blake takes some ill advised shots but that is he who he is and he won't take as many if Gilly is more involved in the scoring effort.

Grant and Gilly are our senior leaders who this team is built around. We need complete games out of them on both ends. For Gilly that means being a scorer on offense for Grant that means providing rim/interior protection on defense. If Gilly goes 3-12 and Grant fouls out because he plays hard defense and we still lose, than so be it but at least it means we fired all of the bullets in our arsenal.

This should be Mooney's charge to both of them today.

All I have to say is: Let's Go Spiders!
I want to see heart, hustle, and all out effort. Crash those boards on both ends! Let's go!

doesn't feel like it, but oddly enough Jacob is taking more shots per game than last year. it does seem like he's hesitant some times.

as for Grant, I don't see how taking more fouls equates to playing better defense. I don't want him taking fouls. I want us to play good defense where we don't have to intentionally put someone on the line to avoid a layup.

Obviously Grant shouldn't just foul for fouling sake. He needs to play tough interior defense and the minute he lets French get by him and just lay it in, Mooney needs to yank him out and say that is not what we need. My reference above is more to the mindset that Mooney needs to instill in Grant on the type of defensive effort that is needed.

French is 5-16 from the line this season. He needs to 5-16 tonight with no FGs...
It would be helpful if Grace & Sal could accomplish that...

I just don't want Grant taking any unnecessary fouls. doesn't make sense. you're asking him to take a foul to save most likely 1 point? a couple of those and he's on the bench. I like Grace as much as the next guy but that' snot an even swap. I want Grant on the floor.

if there's 3 minutes left and Grant has fouls to give ... sure. but not earlier when it can force him to the bench.

Sal and Grace have 10 fouls to use. Send him to the line for 20 free throws...I like our chances there.

And if we need more, Gus or Wilson can come in to double and give a foul or two

I would say the SLU has more thugs on its team than the Lakers. Keep up the good work.

I'd love to hear more about this. Please expand on this point.

Ford is a grade A a-hole, but the SLU players have always played tough, that's not a bad thing, we could use a little less delicateness.

There was no excuse for the hit on Francis from last year's game. I was sitting in the stands, a few rows up. The hit occurred right in front of me. It looked like the SLU guy plowed right into Francis with his shoulder. It was a tackle. Then Blake was lying on the floor for what seemed like an eternity. That was not "playing tough". It was intentional and designed to injure Blake, which it did. It was an intentional hit on one of our best players. Expect more of the same tonight.

I agree 100%. Also, we don't want them in the bonus early because we fouled so much. Other than French, they have guys who are knocking down foul shots.
