Saint Louis

SLU's RPI dropped about 30 spots with the home loss. Will be interesting to see how far their NET slips.

Really needed SLU to win tonight. Would’ve given us a great opportunity this Friday. Still an opportunity for a good win, but not quite as great given their loss tonight

SLU is 23rd in Offensive rebounds (had 2 tonight), is 13th in 3 PT % 39.5 (was 23% tonight)

I just love seeing SLU and that dirtbag Travis Ford lose. Only thing that brings me greater joy is watching the sheep lose

Question for those more knowledgeable than I on the Board. (Yes, I'm acutely aware that encompasses a large swarth of our Board community. :))

Spiders looked a bit rusty v. La Salle after a 10 day pause. Given to understand that players were quarantined and not permitted to work out individually or as a group. St Louis was on pause for 2 or 3 times as long yet did not appear last night to be as out of sync as one would expect even though they lost. Surely, during a pause of that length, they must have been doing some individual, if not group workouts. If true, why is there not a standard, mandatory protocol for dealing with a positive test or if there is such a standard, what is it?

at least rankings don't change yet. Friday is still a chance to get a win over a ranked opponent.

SLU was basically completely shut down. Pretty much the entire team actually had COVID...they weren't just isolating/quarantining for contact tracing. They did spend a full week coming back before playing a game though.

SLU is definitely improved from last year, but it’ll be interesting to see if we match up better this year (I think we might). Burton is a physical rebounder which should help. And SLU is using Linssen this year as their backup center a lot more than Jimmy Bell. Linssen is a more skilled player, but not as much of a physical presence as Bell. It’ll be interesting to see how the matchups play out

SLU is a terrible match-up for us. Similar to West Virginia, they are taller, tougher, play rugged defense and will kill us on the boards.

We are going to have a great shooting night (much better than we've shown thus far) if we are going to win. Not impossible, but I think Friday will be our nail in our at large chances.

The protocols are local or statewide. Our protocols are handed down by the Northam Administration with additional add-ons by Henrico or the City.

As I said on another thread, go tall with Golden and Grace in at the same time, and DON'T PLAY SOFT!

Rick, I have been a proponent of the two bigs in the past, especially some games I was able to see in person where we just got shellacked on the interior and rebounding. Golden is not much of a defensive presence, and Grace will be too slow for SLU. Think it is a bad fit for SLU's bounce and strength inside. I think we need to shoot lights out in this game, as other posters have stated.

I disagree. We should start Golden, Grace & Sal. They should make sure there are no &1s. Then SLU can go 4-40 from the stripe...

SLU’s starters are 6’0 (Collins), 6’3”(Goodwin), 6’5”(Jimerson), 6’6”(Perkins), 6’7”(French). I agree they play tough defense and will likely out rebound us, but not sure we’ll have to shoot lights out to win. Burton, Cayo, and Golden will all have a height advantage. I think the offensive formula should be for those 3 guys to try and score inside. Francis is looking at a tough matchup in Goodwin, so I hope he plays smart like he did yesterday, we don’t need him jacking up contested shots.
On defense, we really need either Cayo or Burton to step up and play tough on Perkins. From what I’ve seen, he is by far their best offensive player, so this will be a tough ask. But I think we match up far better with SLU than we did with WVU

I am preparing for a game that we are soft like pillows again. Saint Louis wins the rebound battle.

Who cares if they win the rebound battle? They outrebound their opponents by 9 a game, so that is a strength of theirs. We have our strengths as well, like how we win the turnover battle pretty much every game.

Its important to actually rebound. Getting second chance points matter a lot.

I saw one person refer to Travis Ford as a dirtbag, and now you have negative about him. I must be living
under a rock- why are you guys so down on a coach?

I remember when he got kicked out of his sons high school basketball game for screaming at the refs from the sidelines.

If someone’s doing that in public, and teaching their college teams to play dirty, it makes me imagine they do much worse behind closed doors.

Also have read of him berating young children in his former basketball camps as well as refusing to sign autographs for those young kids as well. Just seems like a guy I wouldn’t want to be around.

I agree, but not at the expense of other things, and it will not decide the game. Don't let them shoot well from 3, make our shots, including some 3s, win the turnover battle, eliminate transition points, which are all things we can and should do, and the rebounding numbers should be meaningless.

Seen this formula for 15.5 years. Data show it works about 56% of the time. Rebounding has decided many games over that period. That's a problem.

All in on hoping the Spiders make the "formula" work against St Louis on Friday though!!!

Jimerson is likely to have a career day from behind the line shooting over our guards. Gus better see some time.

I wouldn’t be surprised, but I think it’s likely Burton ends up guarding him since he’s 6’5”. I’d say it’s more likely our poor defensive rotations end up leaving him wide open

Difference between us and St Louis, both very good teams, is they are brawlers while we generally play by Marquess of Queensbury rules. Hope we had some chip tooth practices to prepare bc they are going to bring it.

I agree with both statements above. Unfortunately, I expect plenty of questionable shooting from Blake and I think neither Burton or Cayo can stop Perkins. Cayo will be too slow and Perkins will also get by Burton, but Burton may be able to block him from behind a few times. Hopefully that doesn’t lead to foul trouble.

The X factors will be Grant and Gilly. If they both bring the A game, then the Spiders have a chance.

He's a perfect fit for SLU's fans.

SLU is going to dribble-drive us to death if we don't do something about it early (and I don't mean commit a ton of fouls beause we are playing catch-up defense once they do it).

Don't forget last year, last year a St. Louis player broke Blake's sternum. I think our guys remember.

I agree this can be a winning formula, but when its not working (they're hitting, we're not hitting, or other) you have to recognize what you are doing is not working and be able and willing to make adjustments mid-game

Great post Fan1. This is one of CM's glaring weaknesses. He is not a good in game coach. We have seen it time and time again. No adjustments. Not even his most ardent supporter can identify a single in game adjustment made in our last loss to LaSalle. So, to beat St Louis, we have to shoot the ball really well. We all know that Ford will try and make this game as physical as possible and his guys will try to get to the rim and go after offensive rebounds.
