Roussell has some work to do

Don't know the quality of who's left in the portal but -according to the tracker I've been following - here are some stats:

Current number of entries: 1527

Commits: 847

Last year the 3 of the 4 portal additions were announced on May 7 so the fact we haven't had an announcement is not concerning to me. While I'm sure the staff was paying attention to the portal, they also had to focus on an extra week of preparation for UCLA.

We also didn't announce Jimenez signing on until the end of May and she turned out to be a pretty valuable pickup.

No clue if we are in on this one or not, but I was just perusing the transfer portal list and she seemed like the type who could be a good fit. She's a 6-foot wing from Wake, from NoVa originally, can rebound. Didn't shoot many threes but made 67% of them, so I might have her try a few more... Grad transfer, has played a lot at a similar school.

I see we have offered Kate Schindler, 6'1" shooting guard from Marvin Ridge HS in Charlotte, NC.

2026 offer out to Kate Schindler, a 6'1" guard from Charlotte (Marvin Ridge). Offers from App State, La Salle, Navy, UMBC, Manhattan, BU, Elon, Holy Cross, Penn, Campbell, Colgate, Marist, American, and Cleveland State. Scored a Union County record 58 with 12 threes in a game last season.

Edit: Dang it, fan1, I was in the middle of crafting my post! 😝

Thought I knew all the high schools in Charlotte but never heard of Marvin Ridge HS?
Still would love a 6'3-6'4 center type to boost our rebounding.

It's a fairly new school (~15 years or so maybe?) down in the Waxhaw area near the SC line. They've got one of the top HS swim programs in the state, which is how I'm aware of them.

It’s a legitimate high school, I have been to that school.
I lived in Winston Salem 35 years and wonder if this is a new school within last 10 years. My kids all went to
West Forsyth which was 4A when we left in 2015. Not questioning legitimacy, just never heard of it.

If Wikipedia can be trusted: "Marvin Ridge High was founded in 2007, to reduce overcrowding at the neighboring Weddington High School, transferring about half of the student body to the new school."

They moved from 3A to 4A in 2021 and have been extremely successful in many sports. (NC is moving to 8 classifications next year, and Marvin Ridge will be 7A.)

Think one or two Spider football players came from Weddington which I am familiar.

Yours has more pieces of flair.

2027 offer out to Sabrina Anderson, PG out of Potomac School. Participated in U16 national team trials just a week ago. Has scored over 1,000 points in HS in her first two years. Was offered by UVA last fall. I see more recent offers from Toledo and Navy.

Fits our system and has the length on the wing that Roussell likes. She will need to work on her athletism ( lateral quickness especially) to be a major contributor at our level.. Roght now I don’t know that she will be more than a borderline rotation spot up shooter. And even that won’t come super early. But if she can find a way to make a jump on physical attributes, she’s got some skills. Always tough to tell what kids have worked on that stuff already and this is where they are or those that are still raw at building the athletic parts of their game and might have good room for growth.

Have you personally seen her play before?

She does remind me of Maggie Doogan when she started and look how Maggie has blossomed.

Sabrina Anderson ranked #55 in the 2027 class by ESPN. She picked up an offer from Arizona State in the past few days.

Sabrina would be a huge get for the women. Would not shock me for Roussell to get this done. It's amazing what a strong leader with vision and dreams can do for your program.
the difference between Roussell and Mooney is stark in a disappointing way...couldn't agree more regarding the leadership, vision, dreams, charisma, basketball philosophy etc. Roussell brings to the Women's program.

the differences were highlighted by the differences in outcomes of the 2025 seasons...I expect our administrators have and are taking note...rebuilding our Men's flagship Men's program should be a #1 priority!

Go Spiders!

I'm gonna need to find some time to watch this podcast appearance by Roussell...looks like a good one.

Love that last tweet about Roussell getting calls from WNBA scouts for multiple players and saying “those things can be done here”. I firmly believe that too and is one of the many reasons why I think Roussell can be our coach for the long term. He’s winning mid major coach of the year awards, coaching U19 USA team, players who are getting looks for WNBA, a program that is capable of being ranked and winning NCAA tournament games, playing top teams in country, winning championships etc. The list goes on and on. As far as I’m concerned that is just as much success he can achieve at 90% of P5 schools.

Our recruiting continues to get better, our conference continues to get better, and our program continues to get better. Pay the man a P5 salary and give him the house settlement resources to succeed here. It can be done.

The difference is so stark between our MBB and WBB program, how can one not take notice. Hopefully, Hardt and Queally are noticing Rousell running laps around Mooney in terms of effort, engagment, and results. Rousell is out touting how great Richmond is and can be on every sort of media available, lining up a Top 25 OOC schedule and then being named to coach for a USA WBB team.

Mooney appearing in a couple 30 second selfie videos saying he is happy that all of his guys showed up for practice, JOC searching for some meaningful material on our program having to recycle quotes from months ago, slowly dripping out an OOC schedule with zero cache in it.

Summary of podcast.

- Coach talks about the similarities of his coaching experiences at U. Chicago and Bucknell and the intentionality and expectations of where the school wanted the program to be at year 4 with goal to win conference championship and maintain that afterwards.
- Finding success adjusting to the changing landscape of college basketball. Shared recruiting pitch to players of goal that they can go pro or educational opportunity to do other things at UR. Highlighted Addie, Maggie, Rachel, Ally’s pride in the program as a blueprint of success for UR.
- Mentioned receiving calls from WNBA scouts and opportunities UR players had to represent USA. Reiterated idea UR can be attractive to players as a place where they can go pro or be successful in non-basketball profession.
- Discussed the way Roussell is building his offense scheme to reflect the way WNBA is playing and basketball is heading. Coach talks about going on social media to continue learning and finding different concepts to instill. Talked about shot selection for players to the personnel and situation. May not have had as many mid range jump shot but still encouraged in right situation. Mentioned goal of efficiency with offense and not settling for bad shots.
- Talked again about right fit for players coming to UR even with NIL. Highlighted Addie again who will be in UR hall of fame.
- Experience going to USA 3x3 tournament helped players on team. Success in NCAA “just wet the appetite of what we can be”.
- Maggie asking Roussell ways she can improve this off season. Coach telling Maggie to focus on USA basketball. In terms of finding ways to further develop, focus on finishing at the basket more and on taking the shots with higher efficiency. Our style of play fits the next level.
- Host ended by saying to audience to watch our games.

Great podcast and excellent summary. I was born a Spider and have had season tix (parents and me) for almost 70 years, bball and football and now find WBB at the top of my list.
