Robin's Center experience

played the VCU hey song when a lot of our fans had left so let them have their own chant in our building.

This was simply awful. I was sitting close enough to what remained of the student section and they did their best to stave off the "V C U" chants but it was still overpowering. I imagine the folks sitting on the other side of the arena just felt like they were in Siegel 😒

Yeah the music issue during the player intros was embarrassing. And once again, a "red out" where t-shirts aren't given out. There was a good stretch of years where season ticket holders were given a tee each year (not even tied to a particular game) but those days are long gone.

Have we done a pregame or halftime ceremony to celebrate Mooney’s 20 year milestone? Honestly I figured that was a lock. Think of Hardt handing Mooney a platinum ball.

Product is the biggest issue, but the home VCU game is our Super Bowl of home games. Everything should be geared towards that game. Games before should be testing new ideas or concepts for the home VCU game - so when it comes to this game - its the Super Bowl.
Agreed. And all we did was role out the same exact atmosphere we did for all of the other games. Nothing unique or special.

It wasn’t the exact same atmosphere. There weren’t any youth basketball scrimmages at half. /s UR had to set a collegiate record for those this season.
Why not have fraternities or sorioties field teams and they either play in a small tourney, and then the final two teams get to play in short halftime game? I don't mind the youth basketball teams from time to time - but your spot on - we did that almost every game this year. Plus - if you get the fraternities or sororities involved - could result in more students showing up, even if they are just there to see the halftime game.

U of R dislikes Greek life. I doubt that has really changed.

Well that would take outreach and effort, probably why it didn't happen.

Next year, VCU at Richmond.

Halftime Geography Bee.

Be there.
Not a terrible idea - they could do a spelling Bee with the last names of Richmond Spider players - current and past.

And for our final word - please spell "Gustavson". Place of origin - Finland.

Philly Bob & our athletic dept couldn’t even pronounce Gustavson right.

This jogged my memory from a recent game (I was watching on TV) - Dusan and B. Artis were given balls before the game for their 1,000 points - and WebstUr was the one that gave it to them - not Moon. Thought that was super weird - again, saw this on TV - did that really happen?

Yes that happened. I thought that was weird too.

Is this like the No Handshake move???? You didn't score most of those here so the mascot gives you the ball.

Can't say I totally disagree - I mean these kids now that transfer all over the place - they might only score 300 points with UR, but because this is there 2nd or 3rd stop - we need to have a huge celebration? I am fine with giving them a ball to commerate the achievement, but unless you scored 1,000 all at UR, then no need to even have an acknowledgement at a game with the crowd. Maybe just post something on the scoreboard screens and thats it and lets move on.

In a few years, when kids can play 6-7 or even 8 years - we will be handing out 2,000 and 3,000 point balls.

yeah I think of Richmond old coach Dave Clawson. When his wake Qb transferred to Notre Dame for final season they did some send off for him at ND. Clawson was like why u only dated him for a few months. You rented him.

is it really that huge a celebration? I'm happy to acknowledge a milestone for a kid who's worked his whole life to be really good at something. if you as his coach or a fan care at all about the guy, you give him a ball and clap for him regardless of where he scored his points.

Even La Salle is providing fans with t-shirts.

And the thing about the shirts is you get a company to sponsor them so it it doesn't cost you money for the T-shirts. Heck, you make it into a sponsorship package.

Red Out sponsor package, everyone leaves with a t-shirt with your company logo on it, get recognition throughout the night on the scoreboards and all promo leading up to it. You package it to not only cover the costs of the T-shirts but also to make some money through the marketing angle of things.

This is one of the "little" things that should have been locked down as soon as last season ended. "Hey Company X, want to sponsor red-out night next season for the returning A-10 regular season champions?" Instead, they probably waited until this year to try it and no one wants to sponsor a loser, so it's too late.

Taking time out to present the ball to the player is unnecessary in my opinion as well if the points came from playing with team(s) other than UR. As a “fan” do I care how many points a player scored at other schools? If the player has 995 points when he comes to UR and goes over 1000 in game 1, do I even know anything other than his name at that point? It is nice to be recognized, but seems like it would be just as appropriate if the ball was given to the player at a team meeting of some sort. Plus, these guys are getting paid to play basketball now. I’m sure the amount of their NIL payments are top of mind.

All that being said, it is weird that the mascot made the presentation. Maybe the coach that recruited the player would be the right guy if such a gesture is necessary.

I ran into Dave back in December, & we talked about Sam Hartman, the qb. We talked a bit about the portal & NIL. This was a few weeks before DC put in his resignation. There's a good chance I might be seeing him next month, and if so will probably talk more about this.

I remember a few years ago they put t-shirts on all seats in the RC for one game. Can't remember if this was a one off year or more than one year. I guess that's history.

I don[t understand any disparagement towards players for receiving NIL. if you have a problem with the system, fine. but today's NIL-receiving players are no less worthy than the players of the past who "only" received scholarships.

First, I am not denying anything other than a public presentation as I don’t think it is necessary. Sure the crowd will politely clap, but are the fans truly appreciative of the achievement - I doubt it. Second, it is a combination of factors as compared to just NIL. A four year player at UR who now earns NIL money and scores over 1000 points is not the subject here. What is being discussed is an achievement by a player that did not score a significant percentage of this milestone at UR. I say the people in the stands don’t care and obviously Mooney didn’t either since the mascot presented the award. I know there are those who say “but we have always done it”, but times and situations change. I believe there are schools (Duke for example) that only award 1000 pt scorers at their school. I am not being that extreme and said the achievement should be acknowledged, but that I think it is something to be shared with one’s peers versus a public display where the public has very little “history” with the player.

Should we skip Senior Night all together? They all transferred in.

If you only considering 4 year Spiders family, it's getting to be a small family. Times have changed.

I understand where you're coming from and I don't wholly disagree. But once a guy decides to come here, he's a Spider, one of us, whether it's a one year transfer or 3 years.

Of course we don't think of them quite the same as a 4 year guy, but I'm in favor of honoring them the same as we do with the 4 year guys for things like this. Echoing what spiderman said, if we start qualifying who we honor too much we may end up with nobody to honor based on the current system.

Totally agree that times have changed and that is my point. It isn’t the same. And just like whoever mentioned Clawson and the ND QB rental, what exactly is being celebrated? Congratulations you are out of eligibility! But wait in the future the NCAA may adjust the rules to allow for even more seasons because we can’t limit athlete’s earning potential.

Back to the presentation, why not add the 1000 point presentation to senior night?

Pretty sure White and Dusan were honored last year at Western Michigan and Dartmouth during senior night. So, how many senior nights do they get?

I have a more liberal view of senior night. You should be honored by a team (once for each team) if it’s either a) getting a degree that year or b) the last year you are eligible to play with that team. So getting 2 senior nights is fine. Especially for players from Ivy that don’t allow grad students. I would not give senior nights to say a superstar freshman who is going to go pro after a year. But I would give it to a junior who has enough credits to graduate and then either transfers or goes pro.
