Major debate this season has been will Mooney be let go at the end of the season.

Biggest hurdle with this question is the paycheck UR would have to cut Mooney to walk away. Next hurdle is we have an AD who would only be on the job 3 months when he makes this decision. And final hurdle - you have to have someone in mind that you really want and know you can get before you make this move. You don't want to drop Mooney and then be on your 3rd or 4th option.

With that being said - who would be your top 3 candidates that realistically UR could get and would want to get, assuming we pay about the same we are paying Mooney today - close to 1 million a year.

Dream situation: Tom Crean

Realistically: Becker from Vermont

This practice facility will attract A LOT of great coaches. I'm excited for the future

Send Thad Matta to the best specialist at VCU medical center to fix his botched surgery. Oh, the irony.

I posted a bunch of current head coaches who would be good fits in one of the other threads we have about the same topic. I really like the guy at Charleston, he's done a great job there for several years and is 40 years old. Dave Odom's son at Maryland Baltimore county is another up-and-comer. I think Becker is probably a more natural fit for us, and I'd be thrilled with him too. I'd also be happy with a UVA assistant.

Don't worry about Hardt only being on the job for a few months if a coaching change were to occur. All ADs have a list of potential coaching candidates with them for the big money sports just in case--not only for firing purposes but if any of your current coaches depart unexpectedly.

23 is right -- facilities announcement carries Mooney to end of his contract. Queally is telling Chris you have no more excuses once new facility is complete.
Think that you are absolutely right that this ensures Mooney until at least the end of his contract.

I suspect that the donor has bought into the excuses of the Mooney apologists. IF only coach had this or that (practice facility, friendly admissions, better AD - you fill in the rest) that will be the missing link that puts us over the top.

College basketball purist know that Mooney has significant coaching flaws, but I think that most in power at UR don't see it quite as clearly. If the team gets back to 17-15 (and NIT bubble watch) the mediocre pack will again be satisfied.

I won't be satisfied at 17-15. I think we win much more than that next year. every returning active player can play. that's 7. if Sal's as good as we hope, that's 8. if any of the red shirts can really play, that helps. and we still have a couple of spots to possibly fill.

I know I'm in the minority here and I'm not trying to change anyone's mind. I really like the roster we have. I think he's brought in talent that will win. I'll go into next year believing we're going to win. I'll have to disappear for a few months this off season while many of you repeat daily how you want Mooney gone. but if I'm right and we do win next year, I hope you can get on board and enjoy it.

I love the news about the practice facility. I'm on record saying we can do without it because we have the RC, but if generous donors are willing than we're lucky to have them.

I've gone into each of the past 7 years thinking we were going to really do some things. No more. From now on, I'm expecting a bad OOC performance that kills our at-large chances, because that is what has happened 7 years in a row. If this really solidifies Mooney for 4 more years, it's a huge gut punch to many of us.

Spiderman, what would you think if we lose a key player to transfer - say a Sherod, Golden or Buck? No idea on this but it has been discussed that maybe one of these guys gets tired of losing and bolts. Would you be confident in that assessment? Most transfers in the Mooney era have been because we recruited guys that could not play at this level and transferred down. Unfortunately, we may be due for the opposite to happen, especially the way we have leveled off or regressed since 2011. BELIEVE me, I have been playing your game the last 4-5 years. If just everyone gets a little better, and we just need one or two guys to step up, or one of our recruits to hit. I have been on this train for the last several years, every fall brings optimism, and then it is squashed once the season hits. I would love if we are an NCAA team next year, and Hardt is able to keep Mooney motivated (shouldn't be relying on this) and recruiting well the next 3 years, fine. I'll believe it when I see it.

23, if we were to lose a main guy like that my confidence goes out the window. we can't afford that of course. but I don't believe there was any merit to those suggesting that could happen.
I love the roster for next year as it's currently built.

Mooney will get an extension at the end of the year. It will be favorable to UR, but it will be an extension. You can bank on it.

Buck's GF just enrolled to play ball at ETSU. She left UR after last season. ETSU is pretty close to Tech, Wake, West Va., Tennessee.

I listened to Hardt on Bob's show today. Mooney isn't going anywhere. See you guys in 4 years.

How many threads can we create with the same subject?
05, is this still a messageboard? Pretty boring, disgusting, over and over the same by a few impotent individuals. Let’s talk about our team, recruiting, our incredible university, the ever improving athletic facilities, et c.

Experience will be up/improved. We will still be small. I don't think that should be underestimated as a factor in our defensive woes.

With all due respect, it seems that your views are in the "few impotent individual" category. Most of the posters don't seem to share your love for CM nor our long term situation.

Why would next year be any different? Only if the non-conference is a bunch of cupcakes, Sherod took a step forward this season, so did Grant. Gilyard having a great season, doubt he'll be much improved since this year is such a high bar. Buck didn't improve over last season. Cayo may improve some, but that's it. Plus everyone else in the conference will most likely improve as well. So how does that equate to more wins. Regardless of what everyone in the AD is saying the OOC wasn't a murderers row, in fact it seemed pretty weak to me compared to other years.

Maybe instead of a $15M practice facility it would just be $7.5M--all it needs is one hoop with a free throw line and 3 point line and then a black wall to practice rebounding.

I get what you're saying, but as much of a gamer as Buck is I can't imagine him voluntarily sitting out of competitive basketball for a year.

As much as a gamer as he is, I can't imagine him settling for one or zero NCAA berths when he could go somewhere else and get two.

Tough to speculate on what Buck would or wouldn't do - but having talked with his awesome grandmother and seeing the dedication of his family watching him play .....would be very tough to imagine him giving up that aspect..............plus the way the fans respond to him and his all out hustle..............and as far as his girl friend don't even want to go there on speculation.............

Groundhogs day and deja vu all over again is wearing out even the die hards. Time for a new future.

Ha, good one. He was pretty good at Vandy for a long time, and Vandy is a great academic school. I think Pitt has just been a terrible fit for him, plus he really did have to start completely over there.

I'd be open to an extension if the buyout amount at the end of next year was reduced to like a Qdoba coupon and a UHaul gift card. Other than that, no way.
I'll throw in my free Papa Johns coupon as well. In fact should that kid be playing for us?

Pitino was the coach and Tubby Smith was an assistant at Kentucky when Tubby made the phone call to hire Bernadette Maddox so I guess technically it was Pitino who was the trailblazer....................
