Lol Juco’s still getting 4 years d1. I’ve been saying this for a couple years on bball board, only half jokingly, but the next wall to fall is eligibility. Meaning there will be no more eligibility rules. Nobody to enforce. Play as long as u want. Etc.

There is 1 way to fix some of this nonsense imo. Tax exempt status. Tax em’ & they’ll backpedal fast. Why r they tax exempt? Education. If this is now pro sports with pay & no rules that’s gone. At an absolute minimum athletic departments should be paying taxes.

It will end, when schools treat athletes as employees. At that point, Universities will have to provide health insurance, workers comp, pensions and disability income for athletes. Imagine an employed football player has a debilitating injury, leaving him crippled for life. Imagine also a football player is found to have a traumatic brain injury, 20 years later. Schools will have to pick up the bill for all of this.
Right now, schools reap the rewards in revenue, but shoulder none of the costs to the players.

Me thinks that we’ll be losing position coaches given the present state of the program.

Better to get out of Dodge with an 8-0 CAA record on your resume given what’s in store for 2025.

For what its worth, I haven't heard a single portaled kid mention PL as a reason. Most hope to move up and get NIL money... (did we appreciate the value of a degree like UR at 22 years old)? Some have other reasons (including personal reasons not discussed here). Its possible we even take a few back. Given our relative success vs peers, I don't think the portal hit is such a surprise. I'm optimistic that our strong recruiting classes, a few transfers in, plus the rest of the returners from a repeat CAA championship team will put a strong team on the field next year.

The transfer craziness is bad in many ways, but college rosters are not smaller, so in aggregate the portal is not taking opportunities from high school kids. Fear mongering is a bad look for Farrell.
He tied it to the JUCO ruling which in essence becomes a complete reset of eligibility
for a new inventory of ‘older’ players.

ZPS picked up a Missouri State offer, while Tomlinson took a visit to New Mexico State.

He'll get his share of plane rides at NMSU, playing in CUSA. A couple body-bag games, too. Pretty campus, improving facilities, 300 days a year of sunshine and lots of great food and green chiles. I really like Las Cruces.

Coleman with interest from App State.

Shocked he doesn't have a landing place yet. He probably expected far more than "interest" from App State at this point. Especially since it looks like he's just one of three QBs they are looking at and the lone one not from a P4 conference. I suppose he could always return, if he didn't burn any bridges on the way out.

Found these old tweets about Cam linked to Iowa and Arizona. No idea their legitimacy and/or whether there's still anything there. But yeah, otherwise the only offer he's mentioned himself is the Coastal one right after he portaled.

The QB transfer market is weird. Some move quickly to be “the guy” in hopes it’ll scare off others, but then the risk is that some schools don’t really care. Look at what happened to the Albany QB. I don’t really understand all of the movements with starters leaving from seemingly half the schools. Tough spot for kids to be in. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

You are right. Reese Poffenberger left Albany for Miami. He sat on the pine the entire year, except for 6 snaps in a blowout in the first game of the year.

He played behind one of the top QB’s in college football and a projected top 5 NFL pick.

My point is Poffenberger has 4 people above him on the depth chart. If he wanted to play football and develop his skill set, he should have stayed at Albany. These schools promise these kids they will be able to compete for the spot.

Cam Ward also only played one half of football yesterday, by his choice. He wanted to break the NCAA record for number of TDs thrown in a career. He did it in the 1st half and quit.

Ward got the practice snaps and the game prep. His backup got very little.

That cost his team the game.

What a jerk.

We live in a different era now with college athletes (NIL, portal, and entering NFL). Decision making is much different now than traditional thought process of yesteryear.

Miami thrived this year & got where it is in large part due to Cam Ward. Without him, it is doubtful they would have done the same. He is a special talent. In an era where many players forgo bowl games period, he did give them a half. Sorry it doesn't meet your approval. However, he probably was looking out to preserve his health, draft status, and financial viability for his future. It's kind of hard to find fault with that. There are 2 sides to this coin, and I do understand both.

If I were an NFL GM I would want him to explain when it is right to put personal interests above the team interest.
The NFL is top of the totem pole. Other than CFL, arena football, and couple of those much lower spring pro teams, there isn't anywhere for college players to go to the next step. Most want NFL competition & the financial security the NFL offers.

From a risk reward standpoint, it makes perfectly good sense to forego a bowl game for top level players. Think about this - a first rounder plays that final game for the team & suffers a career ending injury with no chance of playing in the NFL. Was it worth it to give one & take one for the team? I don't think so. Or maybe the guy that suffers a bad enough injury that his draft status drops several rounds or even significantly. Was it worth it? 10 years from now, are fans going to remember and say, "John Doe took one for the team and just too bad that it impacted his pro career?"

I don't know any GM's, but it wouldn't surprise me if they'd prefer there potential top picks or franchise type players not participate in one last game. Maybe someone can reach out to former Spider & GM Bruce Allen. It's a good question for a GM perspective.

I understand Ward's injury concern and it's sensible to consider the risk, but if he's that concerned he should have announced in advance he was sitting out the entire game so that his coaches could game plan and the back up could have taken all the practice snaps with the first team...

that has happened quite often in recent years and not many fans think twice about it any more.

It's the mid game exit that's different. Did his Coach and teammates know he was going to exit at the half?

Go Spiders!

That's a pretty easy answer when he says he was looking out for the interest of the NFL team that is likely to draft him #1 or #2 in the upcoming draft.
