Boy, seems dead in these parts. Exciting time of year for most teams. I remember past years it seemed Spidernation shared my enthusiasm, and couldn't wait to see my Spiders team and the new faces and opportunities the year brought. Not feeling it this year from the Spider fans I know, even the last few years. Hope we can get things back in line in a big way, or Hardt has the gumption to make changes. Welcome to hoops season!

I love college basketball. It’s the best time of the year. I’m always even more excited to root and watch the spiders play! Looking forward to seeing what the season has in store

I think the general tone of the board turns many off, so more lurkers (pardon the pun) than posters. That being said, definitely interested in seeing the improvements of the big 3 and how the other 5 or 6 fit in.

We have the best record in the nation right now!!!!

I’m cautiously excited for this season to begin. I think our new guys fit our system well, and our returning guys will progress!

Hope springs eternal, especially when I haven’t watched us yet...

Beat Longwood!!!

I do think we can create some positive buzz if we can sweep through these three games (which I expect) and then beat either loyola or BC/Wyoming - with any loss being close and competitive.

Loyola returns a big 3 like us:
Clayton Custer, Senior, Guard, 13.2 ppg
Marques Townes, Senior, Guard, 11.1 ppg
Cameron Krutwig, Sophomore, Center, 10.5 ppg

Gilyard = Custer
Townes = Sherod
Krutwig = Golden

You could argue that Golden wins that one, Townes a little more athletic all around then Sherod, Nick better shooter/scorer. Custer and Gilyard heck of a match up. I think both KC guys possibly.

Basketball is my favorite sport. I think most people are anxious more so than excited. Trying not to get too high and then have the ballon burst.

Did Gilyard switch sides?

Just kidding! (Only one on the left)

But I am surprised there is not more interest. No matter how well you think this team will do, there are so many players we haven’t seen in a real game on our court, that I would think just curiosity would create more of a buzz..

I think my positive nature always is put to the test when Spider basketball season starts.
Why? It is like the mystery meat your granny used for your bag lunch for school. Is it Spam or
Liverwurst or Country Ham? I just hope Mooney does not kill my taste buds.

I'm excited to see the new players and team but the amount of hype around the start of the season seems to be at an all time low. Not just on this board but everywhere. When the opening day JOC article is whether your coach is on the hot seat, I think that says all you need to know about this year. JOC has been a loyal soldier to Mooney and to our program in general.

Honestly, if I woke up from a coma in March and you told me we finished 3rd or we finished 12th neither would surprise me. I think we probably have the pieces to be a top 4 team in the conference, but a lot has to go right for it to happen. Similarly, I think we have enough top flight D1 talent to stay out of the cellar, even if things go horribly wrong.

I think it likely all adds up to a middle of the pack finish. I'm hopeful for a great season, but if I had to bet on it I think somewhere between 5th and 9th in the A10 would be the safest guess.

I would say that being honest, overall I'm a little less pumped about the start of the season than most years. Just so many negative stories in the past several years that have me a little jaded.

But.....every team is 0-0 so let's tip off, support our Spiders, and see what happens.

I can't wait! been coming on this site 5 days a week since last season ended. Spider hoops is an addiction.
too many new faces to confidently predict greatness, but I'm hopeful. we've got a great core, and I'm excited to see the newbies.

My feeling is that we might have some new actors but we have the same director and I know how his movies play out.

Additionally, the team waits until Friday to play its first game when most teams in the conference open today. Every other A10 team will have played a game by the time we tip off on Friday. Is the team even excited to get the season started?

Except the 2 A-10 teams playing VA teams SJU/ODU 30 minutes after us. Dukes vs W&M Saturday.

But I see what you mean, and I may very well have changed my mood by Thanksgiving...

76-45 W

Thanks for posting 32, looks/sounds like they have a freshman scorer that will need to be accounted for. One positive for us is the neutral site. This game will be a real barometer for our success for the year I think. It's early when we play them, but I am tired of the early excuse. Would be a huge statement to get a W. Now on to Longwood first.

I love Groundhog Day. Have watched it several times and it always ends the same way. Since the message of Groundhog day it to "learn from our mistakes," it would sure be nice to see us doing that too. Only time will tell if we are caught in an endless loop or if we can figure out how to change and move on to the new day. If we are going to do it, there is no better time than now.

There is only one expectation for this team and coaching staff: Make the NCAA tournament or clean house.
I feel less that way about the team. I’m bullish on the players.

However, because of that I agree more-so regarding the coaching staff.

Line is 16 1/2 on 5dimes. Not so sure we cover.

to many changes on both sides to be anything more than an educated guess. I am excited to see how this team blends together, the young players seem a step above what we have been signing. Will they be able to add much to the team? Will they blend as a unit? Will we play schemes they can excel in? the first answers come tonight. I will start to have an opinion after about 5 games, and will have one after about 10 games.

I have been down this road too many times during the Mooney years. Excited and optimistic about the season getting started just to have my enthusiasm dashed by seeing the same old sh** again and again. No defense, no rebounding and praying we can hit some 3's. I rarely miss a home game but I am sitting this one out. I would rather stay home and get ready for tailgating tomorrow. I have no optimism left for coach Moon Beam

This sums up my thoughts (and lack of attendance tonight) perfectly.

Coincidentally, I was at the bus stop this morning and a couple other dads asked me about the 'fun kids area' at the UR basketball games because they were planning to take their kids tonight. One guy went to UVA and the other went to an Ivy League school. Really no interest in UR basketball. Just a cheap diversion for the kids tonight.

We have truly become the college basketball version of the Flying Squirrels. It is incredibly pathetic.

Anyone familiar with ESPN+?
Read there are replays. I can't watch live tonight but would love a replay later.

$5 tickets and BEER! Cheaper than the squirrels and better facilities

It is the cheapest family entertainment in town. $5 tickets, Kids Club tickets are pretty much every game now and they are free. So, for 10 bucks you can take your entire family out. You literally can not find a cheaper entertainment option for a family in the RVA. You want to know why our attendance still is pretty darn decent despite our product, this is why. It's not because the team and program is generating this. We have a great family friendly facility and basically give away tickets now just to get people in the seats.

For the record, I am going tonight, I have been to pretty much every single men's college basketball game since 1993. I have never been less enthused about what is my favorite team to follow ever. I typically plan my winter schedule around Spider hoops, this year, I will hit the ones I can. If this teams catches lightening in a bottle and gels, I'm sure I'll get amped up. I'm not holding my breath for that to actually happen.

Nice call, I wish I had stayed home

I had surgery on Thursday, so I missed the game completely. When I saw the score this morning, I wasn't surprised one bit. I'm glad the Fire Mooney crowd is growing, and the red and blue glasses are coming off some people. If this doesn't do it, nothing will.
