Official GW Game Thread - A10 Game # 2

One observation about refs. The one with the pony tail called at minimum 4 phantom fouls. Almost egregious. Burton balled out yet again. Love to see roche getting some shots. We missed at least 3 drives where they collapsed and he was wide open.

Nice bounce back win, we are definitely a different team at home. It felt good to slowly take hold of the game in the second half and never let them really make a run down the stretch. Tyler was very good and we got solid contributions from several others. Still would like to see Nelson be less reckless, we just aren't good enough on offense this year to be giving away possessions like that.

The change in GW's shooting percentage from first half to second half was definitive. Goose defensive play was phenomenal. Burton has terrific moves going to the hoop. Admit being spolied and wanting the 9 for 9 free throw shooting to continue in the second half but trailed off to .667 ..............Glad for the W!

Watched entire game that appeared back and forth until a couple possessions where Goose was like glue on Bishop. He wasn't able to go the basket as often instead settling for deep contested shots. Please continue with the "Gooose Goose"! Seems to get everyone team included pumped. Don't care if they sell tickets for $2 to get a big crowd. Better than watching some ESPN+ games that look like barely 1K in the stands.

My observations from last night:

Defensive adjustment at halftime to have Goose guard Bishop was key. Goose visibly frustrated him and took him out of his game.

Nelson was pretty careless with the ball out there. You could tell Mooney was frustrated with that as he got yanked twice immediately in the first half. Nelson was also getting abused on defense at times. Granted both of their guards are really good, can play through contact, our bigger than Nelson, but he's gotta tighten that up. Nelson made some nice plays out there as well, so it wasn't all negative for sure.

Bigelow played within himself offensively. When he goes hunting for shots, that is not his game, but when he gets his looks within our offense, he can get himself going and is much better. He was a beast on the boards.

Quinn's man could not guard him. He had a bucket or a foul anytime he wanted last night. It was encouraging to hear Mooney on the postgame say that both the coaching staff and the crowd both want to see him more assertive on offense and they are working to get him there.

Burton was the deal last night. He put the team on his back, played through contact, hit some big 3's, he wasn't going to let us lose. Just a great all around game.

Can't lose home games to GW and we didn't. Team should feel good about the W and the way they played, particularly in the second half.

On us or them? I only was able to catch 2nd half but I thought we were beneficiaries of some very questionable calls. It’s been the opposite so I’ll take it.

pony tail was bad both ways. called things that weren't there. became an unneccessary part of the game.

That three-foul (on us) possession for GW in the second half was just absurd. But then I think we got the benefit of most calls the rest of the way.

Agree with everything here. Big slow played a great game. Nobody tried to play above themselves last night and that showed in the result. Please for the love of god MFG, don’t shoot more than three 3’s a game

Nelson, with Goose on Adams (who in the hell thought that was the right matchup). Giving Mooney credit for the switch is only valid because he messed it up in the first place. Good, he fixed his own mistake by having Goose bail him out

Gotcha. I figured Goose would be on him from start. Tho Adams scores a lot for then too not far behind Bishop. Maybe Moon learned from goo moo game when not switching Goose to Polite.

Agreed. It was a clean game but then the refs thought they needed to remind everyone that they were there.
The stoppage of the game by the refs to review the video and confirm the shot clock violation that was obvious to everyone watching and particularly to the female ref who called it was a colossal waste of time. It was as if the head ref was trying to say "I"m in charge here."

Exactly!! Did you see the third ref and the woman ref fist bump each other after it was verified?

I think this game shows the pattern you will see most nights moving forward. Get Burton close to 20 shots and play him 38-40 minutes a night. We need him to score 20+ a night to have a chance.

Nelson, Goose, Grace - they will be near or above 30 minutes. Even Nelson, who didn't have a great game still got 32 minutes, so I expect when he plays better - he will play even more.

Roche and Bigelow - they are our bench scoring. Randolph could be included, but I think he brings more energy when needed more than anything. But between the 2 of them - we got 17 points, which I think going forward if we can get 15 points a night or more out of both of them and Bigelow keeps rebounding, we are in a good shape.

Quinn - its clear. He will play 20 minutes and give us 6-8 points. Not much rebounding, not many mistakes, etc. I was a little confused last night in the 2nd half - Quinn made the spin move and dunk. Then next time down the court he drew a foul. And I though to myself, alright - he were go - he is getting some momentum, and then Mooney takes him out of the game. Why? 2 positive things happened (Dunk and foul) and then we take him out? I would have kept rolling with him until the next media timeout, which I think was still 2-3 minutes away.

I think it would not be easy guarding someone as active as Bishop all game. If Goose guarded him in the 1st half like he did in the 2nd half, he likely would have been pretty worn out and probably less effective in the 2nd half. Some scorers you can guard all game, but others it makes sense to do it exactly the way we did it. This also prevents them from seeing how Goose was playing him and then adjusting at halftime.

I think this was clearly our strategy going in and as long as GW didn't get a decent lead on us, we were sticking with it, regardless of how many Bishop scored in the 1st half.

I just rewatched our defensive possessions.
GW almost always runs a high ball screen. most of Bishop's damage was taking that screen and getting downhill scoring over or around our big who tried to help. Goose is much better defending that high screen with his length than Nelson. Mooney switched that, but also brought the hedge higher to stop the drive. when Bishop looked to pass to the screener he had the big long Goose to contend with. good adjustment.

we switch so much in any possession that while we started with Nelson on Bishop in the first half, he didn't score everything on him. Goose, Randolph and Roche were all on him at times.

btw, from watching just the defensive possessions ... Burton played a heck of a defensive game in addition to his scoring. Goose was very good defensively. and Roche was really active too.

It looked like on that shot clock review, the one ref had called a foul and one called the violation. So they were checking to make sure that the called foul occurred after the shot clock hit zero. It was clear to everyone that the shot didn't get released until after the buzzer.

Seeing Nelson on Bishop in the first half was ridiculous. Perhaps Mooney was trying to get Nelson to put into practice something he was being coached or Mooney didn’t want Goose to wear down if he had to guard Bishops the whole game. Glad Goose put the clamps down in the second half.

Mooney addressed that in postgame. They initially had Nelson on Bishop and Goose on Adams because they were worried about Adams' size going up against Nelson, though they did switch off some.

Clearly Adams was shut down in the first half, so they switched Goose onto Bishop in the second half to shut him down too, and Adams still wasn't able to get going.

The only whistle I heard was by the female ref calling a shot clock violation.

The other ref raised his arm to call a foul at the same moment, and as the video cut to them discussing immediately afterwards, you can read his lips saying "I had a foul" or something approximating that.

Is it normal that only 2 of the refs are assigned to look at the monitors? Felt almost that the 2 gents excluded her from doing the review as she stood a few feet back.

Yes, It appeared to be:

GW Player leaves the floor with the ball
Shot Clock goes off
GW player got fouled over the back
GW player releases the ball

In that order...

They frequently have only two, and the third will come in if they need another opinion. Regardless, she was definitely involved in looking at the monitor.

The third one called on Bigelow when the GW player was falling around to make contact was totally absurd.............
There was a bad one on Quinn as well. The female ref called some unnecessary touch fouls but she was not alone in the calling of phantom fouls.

Interesting. I feel like we would have rather taken our chances with Adams torching us than Bishop, who is a top scorer nationally. I get what 4700 was saying above about not wanting to wear Goose out – that makes more sense than Mooney's explanation, although I would hope Goose could have defended him for the whole game regardless.

The crew missed several traveling calls last night also. On both ends.

that was the strongest GW squad I have seen in quite some time, happy we put them away towards the end.
Bishop is a very good player and like Burton, could be playing for any P6 school. Bishop talked a lot of smack though, so I was happy to see Burton out score him in the end. 26-25

Adams is no slouch at 17 ppg, and he's 2" and 20 lbs bigger than Bishop. it kinda made sense.
the switch made more sense.

His First year was at LSU.

how about the sweep into a 3 pointer foul called on Burton? that was awful.
Yeah Burton was totally preplexed on that call. The strange dynamic was that GW got the ball out of bounds and no shots were awarded. That meant the foul was after the shot, but not in the act of shooting. The GW player waved his hand into Burton's hand after he finished shooting. To call that a foul was quite a stretch.

I think they called it "before the shot". the sweep before the shot initiated contact. so why is that a foul on Burton?
should have been a no call.

It really didn't make a lot of sense. Bishop was trying to get the shooting foul they give all the time in the NBA with the sweep into a shot, but she called it before the shot. That means it must have been when Tyler gently had his hand stretched out and tapped Bishop on the hip twice just before the sweep. Beyond weak as a call.
