Big Sky All-Conference Teams Release

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota junior safety Cole Reyes was named the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year and the league’s co-champions were well represented on the All-Big Sky Football teams announced by league officials on Tuesday.

Reyes, who is the first UND player to earn that distinction in program history, was one of 11 Fighting Hawks to earn all-conference honors and five more were named honorable mention to give the program its best all-conference representation since joining the league prior to the 2012 season. The 11 honorees equaled the most by a league team as fellow co-champion Eastern Washington also had that many players garner all-conference accolades.

Reyes was joined on the first team by offensive tackle Michael Coe, running back and return specialist John Santiagoand cornerback Deion Harris. Inside linebacker Dylan Bakker and placekicker Reid Taubenheim were named to the second team, while running back Brady Oliveira, guard Demon Taylor, defensive tackle Tank Harris and defensive end Noah Johnson were named to the third team.

Reyes, who was a second-team All-Big Sky performer a year ago, finished the regular season with 58 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, a sack, three interceptions, eight pass break-ups, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles in nine games. The UND captain was twice named ROOT SPORTS Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week and also helped his unit lead the league in scoring defense (21.9 ppg) and rush defense (91.5 ypg).

Deion Harris also earned the league’s weekly defensive accolade twice during the season and led the Big Sky with 14 passes defended and five interceptions during the regular season. He also returned three of those interceptions for touchdowns and added nine pass break-ups.

Santiago is just the sixth player in Big Sky history to earn back-to-back, first-team accolades as a freshman and sophomore. He finished the regular season with 924 rushing yards and led the Big Sky with 1,517 all-purpose yards. The reigning Big Sky Freshman of the Year accounted for nine total touchdowns and also equaled a school-record with a 100-yard kickoff return in the win over Weber State.

Santiago joins Nevada running back Charvez Foger (1985-86), Eastern Washington wide receiver Cooper Kupp (2013-14), Weber State placekicker, punter and safety Scott Shields (1995-96), Weber State running back Trevyn Smith (2006-07) and Nevada placekicker Marty Zendejas (1984-85) on that exclusive list. Kupp was named the Big Sky’s Co-Offensive Player of the Year along with teammate Gabe Gubrud and earned his fourth-straight, first-team accolade.

Coe arrived on campus as a graduate transfer after racking up All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors in 2012 (third), 2013 (second) and 2014 (first) at Western New Mexico. He started the first four games at center before shifting out to right tackle for the final seven regular-season contests.

In his first season as a full-time starter, Bakker paced the defense with 85 tackles and added 6.5 tackles for loss and four pass break-ups in 11 starts. Taubenheim, who was a third-team, all-league selection in 2014, returned to the squad in 2016 after leading the league in field goals made with 15.

For the second-consecutive year, Johnson earned third-team accolades after finishing the regular season with 30 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss.

A trio of Fighting Hawks’ sophomores earned their first all-league honors. Tank Harris earned his after collecting 26 tackles, while Taylor helped Coe and the rest of UND’s offensive line produce the league’s third-ranked rushing offense that averaged 217.6 ypg.

Making the most of those holes was Oliveira, who had four 100-yard rushing games and accounted for at least one touchdown in all eight Big Sky games. He finished the regular season with nine rushing scores and added a touchdown pass in the Fighting Hawks’ championship-clinching win over Northern Arizona. The Winnipeg native finished with a career-high 837 rushing yards.

UND’s honorable mention selections were special teams player Alex Reed, defensive ends Drew Greely and Brandon Dranka, outside linebacker Brian Labat and cornerback Torrey Hunt.

The seventh-seeded Fighting Hawks are continuing preparations for the program’s first FCS playoff game that will take place Saturday, Dec. 3, against the winner of the Richmond-North Carolina A&T matchup.

Big Sky opponent notably missing from their 2016 schedule is Eastern Washington. Eastern's only 2016 loss was in OT in the Fargodome.

Looks like the game is at 6PM on Saturday. That will help with those going to the Wake hoops game on campus that day.

The Cellar opens at 5 and has setup for ESPN3. Think we'll get hassled on tailgating from 2 until 5?

ThinK of the money making opportunity for the Spider Club if they opened the terraces from say 4 until the end of the game...

Does the ncaa allow for a charter flight or do we have to fly commercial?

We flew charter-direct to Illinois State and NDSU last year.If NCAA doesn't reimburse,am sure we will do it anyway.Flying commercial through Minneapolis would be extreme hardship and we should be spotted at least 10 points for such inconvenience. No one in their correct mind would fly though Minneapolis even on a summer day.

Glad to see QB for ND not listed here.

There's really no easy way to get to Grand Forks. ALthough it has it's own airport, it has limited flights to MSP. Other than that, It's about 75 miles north of Fargo and about 145 miles south of Winnipeg. That's about it.

maybe the best ride to Grand Forks would be on a B-52?...

not sure what's going on now, but believe during the cold war Grand Forks was one of the homes of the Strategic Air Command bases and the fleets of nuclear armed B-52 conventional bombers...

think I've read the ancient B-52s are still flying and part of the nuclear arsenal...

True. If an accident occurred , heaven forbid, it would have killed 27 people.

Wow, just watched the highlights 32 posted. They really keep themselves in games with turnovers. Blocked punt v Stony Brook, win by 4. 5 forced TO's v Montana St, win by 2. Crazy comeback v NAU with a pick 6.

They seem pretty solid on special teams. Kicker missed 1 PAT, have blocked a couple of kicks. We really need to take care of the ball in this one. Make them drive 70 yards for a score because they have gotten a lot of short fields.

Yeah, flights through MSP on Friday seem to be the best option

Does the ncaa allow for a charter flight or do we have to fly commercial?

to goto Stink Forks.. you usually always have to fly to Fargo then bus 70 miles like when they bring their recruits in...haha

anyways. punch them in the mouth, they havent beaten 1 solid fcs team this year (poly just lost to a non scholly) total paper tiger. there will only be about 6500 actual fans in thier tin shed. Run the football, use alot of play action and blitz the crap out of their QB and you win 31-14

Would absolutely love to! It's a far trip though and I think I'm going to Orlando this weekend for the acc title game. I've always heard NDSU fans are a very hospitable and great hosts. I know y'all love your football and so do I and I want to make a game up there someday so I can be around some like-minded people who love talking football and having a great time at a tailgate. Good luck to y'all this week as well! Go Spiders!

This is compelling. If you find somebody that can buy my tickets to the Wake Forest hoops game, I'm sold. Perhaps for less than face value, even.

Anyone that has signed upon the UND boards let them know they do not have to pay to join the public board. I tired to sign up there to let them know (someone posted they had to pay to join) and there was a "problem" with the attempt. I will try again latter.

I tend to eat and drink a lot at tailgates, especially when I'm being handed free stuff.
I hope the roads are flat and straight in ND.

The board is saw was siouxsports.com
Hi there. Siouxsports is the correct board. You'll be welcomed there as we are very curious about Richmond.

Just to clear something up, lakesbison is a degenerate who had been banned from his own teams board multiple times and everything he says, especially about UND, should be taken with a massive grain of salt.

So, what would you like to know about UND?

why was the fighting Sioux name changed and how does yalls fan base feel about it?

why was the fighting Sioux name changed and how does yalls fan base feel about it?
Liberal bleeding hearts felt it offended the natives. One tribal leader wouldn't let his people vote to approve the nickname which doomed the nickname. The situation became too toxic to save. UND supporters stayed stubborn and fought it for another 5 years. Dropped the name to avoid sanctions. It was a black cloud over our teams and school for over a decade. It was to the point where if we kept the name we would have had to drop football because no conference would accept us with that baggage. If you go on the rez to this day you will see tons of sioux gear worn with pride by natives.

There are now two factions of UND fans: those who have moved on because we support our university no matter what, and the sioux forever crowd that will never accept the new nickname or logo ever. I wish we could have kept it but it just wasn't going to work out so I have accepted the Fighting Hawk nickname, even though it wasn't the one I voted for, and the new logo because, at the end of the day it was the success of our student athletes that made us great, not a nickname or a cartoon.

Sorry to hear y'all have a divided fan base, that can't be good. I had no idea the situation was to the point where football may have had to be dropped either. Unfortunately the PC culture that mostly my generation is bringing in is such a shame and I try to fight it whenever possible.

Just look at the pipeline situation with ignorant liberal ecoterrorists and celebrities. All over a pipeline that is going to cross a river that already has multiple pipelines crossing it. They've pulled out all the stops and won't let facts get in the way of a good story.

I'd prefer to talk football though. How tall are your DBs? We have a couple of true fr tall slow ass white boys that have been deadly on back shoulder throws.
