NCAA Tournament "at large" candidate University of Richmond Women

word vomit. Not sure what all that meant. Not rooting against Moon to not win big games. never have. He thinks we are one of the best basketball programs in the nation, right?
I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree. I don’t understand why you would want to schedule a very hard schedule just to say “it’s the mentality” and then proceed to lose all of them. My point of view isn’t to say don’t schedule these kind of games, but limit it appropriately to the team you have/anticipate to have. If we become as good as our women’s team and win the great games we scheduled in previous seasons, then schedule more. If we stink, schedule less of them. We scheduled tougher with Gilly/Golden because we anticipated having a better team. If we have sustained excellence (which we have not) then we can take more chances with the strong schedule mentality you propose. But the opposite isn’t a weak mentality. It’s being realistic. Scheduling means nothing if you don’t win the games.

Be willing to play anyone anytime especially higher rated programs...water seeks its own level...........schedule tougher and you will attract better players..........Since this thread is about women's basketball we can see how that philosophy has worked in a positive direction............

spiderbacktracker 17 u r now adding all these qualifiers. We've talked about this for years & you've always indicated it's your way of maximizing at large chances. that u shouldn't schedule too hard regardless. moving targets.

also I've answered. u r scheduling for the years u r good and can win enough against it. harder to identify those years in NIL portal era. Not just your own but other teams. Fortunately unlike UR u can identify consistency year to year with some. u have to schedule in advance too can't just snap your fingers the years u want. Improve at large chances. national schedule. who wants to play the Mt Olives. culture. mentality. check out what spider fan and urfan1 say about the players too.

Roussell gets it.

Go Spiders. Beat LA.

Great players want to play a great schedule.
Great players also want to go to a school that prioritizing winning now. Playing a great schedule is a necessary part of that. Any recruit is gonna look at the women's schedule and say damn, I get to play against Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma State, Tennessee. That is a huge recruitment talking point. The head coach is all on board with playing the best of the best as well and talks about out loud all of the time.

Meanwhile our men's team is playing in an MTE with D2 schools are all it's head coach does is talk about how hard it is to schedule. Good luck trying to swing recruits with that message and schedule.

lol ok GK, whatever you say. Our schedule this year was really bad and we had a really bad team, which is a recipe for disaster. Overall, I’ve been pretty consistent with my position on this but it requires another forbidden word of yours, nuance.

Anyway, back to this thread. Go Spiders. Make history against Georgia Tech and shock the country with a win over UCLA. We’re all rooting for you.

17 - wish you hadn't polluted this thread with talk of the men's program. I understand why you did but this was my respite from having to think about Mooney.

On a different note, Flavor Flav posted his bracket and picked GT to win. I have corrected him on that.
I apologize for that. Wasn’t my intention, but one thing led to another I guess. The focus should be on this tremendous team we have who have made us all proud and is still playing meaningful basketball. I have confidence we will be up for the challenge this weekend, that’s for sure. Go Spiders!

I haven't been to Pauley Pavillion since its remodel several years ago, but it was actually a pretty plain and underwhelming facility for all that UCLA basketball has accomplished over the years. Very little ambiance. I thought the Robins Center was much nicer, especially after the remodel.

The baseline seating was horrible, very far back from the basket, and the place was dark inside. Lots of banners though. And maybe the remodel improved it.

OTOH, when you get outside it is beautiful. It's hard to beat Southern California when the weather is nice, and Westwood is a very pretty neighborhood.

we can get Lil Dicky. Women's team should be tweeting at him to talk up the team and show up to game. Tho based on our marketing chances r poor.

"If you are for creating a schedule that maximizes our chances for an at-large, I disagree that we should be playing away/neutral against 4+ power teams."

Nuance. Just going to leave that there and see myself out.

How far did you have to dig for that one sentence to copy and paste here? You know I like to make long posts sometimes to explain my thoughts. Feel free to include that too next time. I’ve also made many posts talking about scheduling and if I recall pointed out the difference of a Vanderbilt like power team vs. an Auburn for instance or power team who may be lower tier like Boston college but could sneak up the NET because of their conference affiliation.

Nothing about that comment contradicts what I am saying now regarding our schedule because you need to win the games for it to mean anything. Our women’s team gives me confidence that we can win these games so we could go schedule all power conference teams and I’ll be okay with it. Our MBB does not. So we can have some good power conference games where if we win, great. If we lose, our poor OOC record doesn’t immediately eliminate us from an at-large.

Not far because same thought is in every post you make on scheduling.

We can pick up another time or another thread. I agree let’s concentrate on the ladies.

So, a couple interesting things to note on the leaderboard.

1. Men's Basketball, our flagship program, is currently in 11th place out of of 15 total sports programs for total number of individual donors. Field Hockey and Men's lacrosse are the Top 2 sports. Both have more than 4 times as many donors that our flagship. The women's team has twice as many donors as the men's teams.
2. I noticed that most of the coaches made donations to UR giving day for their teams. You know which coach hasn't though. Yep, you guessed it the Moonman. Way to show leadership there buddy.

Also noticed numerous women players and their families donating to the team. Zero men's player or family members donating to support the men's team.

It's kinda pathetic...Connor Crabtree is the only alum I see on the list for men's hoops, though there are a few anonymous gifts. They're milking him because no one else has given.

To be fair, many people, including me in these sorts of situations, give anonymously even though no one would know my name except for my friends. But if you were someone whose name is known, for being a former or current player, family member, coach, faculty, staff, etc., people would always complain, especially in these days of NIL. We paid you HOW much and you're only giving back $X? So players in particular, in any sport, no matter how much you love or merely tolerate your school and your coach, are in a lose-lose situation.

From what I've seen it's always been that way with men's bball coaches, current families, & Mooney era ex players for most part. Maybe entitlement. I was always taught to donate something back. when u or your son is getting paid and getting free education u should give back imo to a school...plus these players r coming from middle to upper class families regularly.

Now could they be giving anonymously, or at some other time. Of course no way to know. But factually with UR Giving Days there is always a noticeable difference. part of that is the other teams need a more grassroots campaign.

Men’s basketball program needs are listed as: technology enhancements and leadership & player development. Don’t really know what that means to be honest. I wonder if there’s a sense of entitlement the MBB feels they should have. Everyone knows it’s our flagship and most popular sport at UR. For some fans, like myself, Richmond MBB is my favorite team of all sports college/professional, domestic/international that I follow. One donor even has up to a 100K match for MBB that no other sport comes close to.

Whereas the Women’s team are using the money for the following:
  • Upgrade opponent scouting software
  • New technology for player workouts including shot trackers
  • Enhanced travel to games
  • Statistics/Analytics evaluation software
Upgrading scouting software makes sense especially considering we will be playing a lot of elite opponents. Technology for player workouts make sense to continue as we were one of the best shooting teams in the country last year. Enhances travel to games I hope means getting chartered flights, which they absolutely deserve. So all in all, my donation went to the women’s team this year. Very proud of what they’ve done and what they will continue to accomplish.

I have no idea whether any men's players have donated, but I personally enjoy seeing several of the current WBB players have donated. And I wouldn't know that if they donated anonymously. I think it shows an appreciation for the program they are part of. Several MLAX players have also donated. The MBB players are different?

Also, the gift from UR this year for giving a donation of $25 or more to athletics is UR shoelaces. I’m sorry, but there’s got to be at least a 100 better options they could’ve gone with than that. Save all the money from sending people shoelaces and use it to do a proper red out next year!

Mooney’s still trying to figure out how to log into X.
I get guys of a certain age aren't as comfortable with social media, or feel comfortable with hyping their program. But our mens program seems in the dark ages. And when we put something out it often has wrong info or typos. All the lack of modernization and adaptation to technology just adds to the low mid major feel we are seemingly going for.

The majority of this year's women's team has donated, including Swider who is in the portal. It doesn't have to be a lot, but it shows pride in your program.

Our men's program just gives off the vibe that Mooney is utterly comfortable knowing he has everything he wants or needs handed to him and has very little pressure. I'm not a big social media person either (in terms of posting), but if it was my job to be the face of a high-profile program and get people excited about it, I'd sure as hell be doing something with it.

With the caveat that there is more time to give, I just looked at the donor lists for men's and women's basketball. On the WBB side, Roussell and his top four assistants have all donated to WBB. For the men one assistant has donated. One further caveat is that more MBB coaches could have donated anonymously. But this speaks volumes to me about which team I want to support.

To be fair, I wouldn’t go as far as saying that seeing our men’s coaching staff and players not donating or having public support is a negative, but certainly the opposite where Roussell is publicly talking about building greater goals, seeing players (even ones who transfer) and their families donate is definitely a positive in my eyes. Like SF said, to me it speaks to the pride in this program. A desire to be the change in which you seek. Those values carry well in all facets of life. Our women’s team has earned our support, resources. and all the recognition they’re getting. Let’s build something special with this program.

Morning update. Men's basketball is currently in 13th place among 15 teams. The men's tennis team and women's golf team are the only teams with less donors than men's basketball.

The women's team has about 2.5 times more donors than the men's. Men's Lacrosse is blowing everyone out of the water with most donors and by far the most money raised. Looks like people are supporting programs that win.

Also, Mooney still has not contributed. Peter Thomas has and Goose has as well (Goose and Crabtree look like the only former players who contributed). No current players have contributed either. Numerous current and former women's players have contributed as well as their family members.
