Seriously, what are folks thinking? After OOC, I was on record of thinking he had a 50-50 chance of remaining our coach come March. Then we had the nice run at the start of A-10 play and I thought he had basically won himself another year. But now, seeing how the last 5 losses in a row have played out, I just don't know. I'm back to thinking it is about 50-50 when I try to look at objectively, honestly I feel right now, that he is probably more likely to be let go. Just my gut, seeing how things are playing out (the blowouts, the team seems to be cratering, bad senior day recognition, Mooney just sounds defeated when he talks now).

Being 2-10 out of conference was more than enough evidence. Being 9-19 is really awful . Remember we are also 5-9 on our home court. If we lose out I see even more evidence with a 7 game losing streak.

My gut thinks that this is U of R, and this sort of thing just isn't going to happen. Not knowing how those in admin and the money people think is the wildcard. What the consensus on this board thinks is one thing, but the unknown of the wildcard speaks volumes.

I think the effort from the players the next 3 (or more) games will give a pretty clear answer of how this plays out. If the effort is there, he'll be back. If we have another GW style stinker, he's cooked.

Coach for Life. We'll still be talking about him and Shafer as they enter their 30th years together in 17 years.

Before this last streak, I was sure of him being back with this group for at least one more year to see if they can collectively make the leap.

After this late season dip that resembles the OOC, I could see enough reason for him to go. But this is UR, so he will probably be back and we’re having a lot of the same conversations next year

Mooney has set the bar so low that a 17 win season next year would be seen as progress. So if we keep him he'll be around for at least another 2 years.

There is no better time to end it then there is now. Save us Hardt.

Big givers hold the key. $3500 minimum donor seats were fairly empty at St. Joe's game. More so than other recent games but may merely be a sign of weariness with a losing season. If those with deep pockets say they want him gone he is gone. Otherwise inertia rules and nothing changes. Only exception is if Mooney totally implodes. His frazzle and frustration level is high but that may be insignificant to his future. The beat goes on.

Money guy is now Hardt's boss. Mooney is their responsibility collectively. His ineptness is a reflection on them. They could make a statement with change. Will they?

I think the odds as we speak are 50/50. The odds should be that he got sacked after the GW debacle.

He will stay. Might force him to hire an experienced bench coach and replace an assistant or two, but he stays.

Ulla and Quealy are the only votes that count and they say -He Stays for at least two more years!
So the message is just SHUT UP !, Renew your season tickets! and Negative attitudes are detrimental to the program! Next Year will be better so get ready to ENJOY THE RIDE AND ROLL SPIDEY!

97, this is making my head hurt. The support from the truthers, and that they may be correct that he will be back is really unbelievable. Beginning to think Mooney is the biggest con man since Willy Wade, just in a different way - but WWW won at least.

Not facing the reality of where our program is, is detrimental to the program so keep expressing your opinion

I don’t think this boils down to the final record, it will come down to whether Hardt believes CM has been hamstrung by Admissions or if his coaching/recruiting is just flawed. Limping across the finish line is going to make selling the former a tough pitch for Hardt to overcome.

He’snot Going anywhere. (That attendance number is at best misleading they must be counting all the kid tickets). My only hope is we dramatically improve next year or the school steps up and let’s him go after next season

First off, we would be crazy to jettison Mooney with what we have coming back. Second, I have
heard through the grapevine that if Mooney goes, Golden will transfer. I have no idea if this is true but the source is well connected. Third, this team will be much better next year. If I were Hardt,I would tell Mooney
that a winning season next year was imperative. But Mooney is our coach next year. If you think that is unacceptable, you are delusional.

Air Force Falcons, 2004-2007
2004 - Made NCAA
2006 - Made NCAA
2007 - Advanced to NIT Final Four

2005 - Chris Mooney was head coach.

This is what we have to look forward to.

If this is how our leadership is evaluating the situation, we are completely screwed and might as well drop to the Patriot League or d3.
Yeah, you can't ever hire or fire (or keep) a coach based on which players may or may not transfer. You're not hiring a coach for 2 or 3 years. You are (hopefully) hiring one for 6 or 7 years.

As was postulated in other threads, if we make a good hire for CM's replacement, we may mitigate transfers, or perhaps even retain all our guys and improve recruiting at the same time.

The team probably will be much better next year. We are sitting at 9 freaking wins this year. If we win 17-18 games next year and are "much" improved but don't make the post season are we back to wearing our rose colored glasses and everything is ok again? Once again we are afraid to take action because "the next coach might be worse than Mooney or X player might transfer" instead of the next coach we hire might drastically improve our recruiting and get us to the NCAA's regularly. I agree with you that this is what will happen though and I fear we are just delaying the inevitable instead of taking aggressive steps to reach our full potential as a program.

Would love to hear you’re thoughts on why we will be much better next year. I think we can be better, but see a the potential for a whole lot of the same based on roster construction

If he isn't fired this year he will be here for a while. Odds are that we improve next year even if Mooney stays and we win like 16 or 17 games maybe. Then we get people like ulla saying how great we are just from watching practice and that some new freshman is all world (just like he said about solly and Paul) and that were destined to go back to the NCAA's. Then we disappoint and only make the NIT in Bucks senior year but that is still considered a huge success by our dumba$$ athletic department, then Buck and nick graduate without ever going to the big dance and the cycle starts all over again. I'm sick of this we need a change now!!!!

He stays. Don't think the the administration has the guts to do anything. I do think in 2 years we make the NCAA's, lose first round - and Mooney's name is mentioned with big conference jobs, so we lock him up for 8 years at 1.5 million a year. And it will be about 8 more years until we return to the NCAA's.

To be honest, it's not the fact that we don't win games that bugs me the most. It's the fact that the athletic department doesn't really seem to make any efforts to improve the situation. My dad would come to all my soccer games and would tell me that he didn't care how great or poorly I played, as long as I give it my best. If I didn't give it my best and gave up, then he would leave.

I'm ok with us having some bad seasons here or there if the department genuinely makes efforts to better our program. For instance, if firing Mooney results in a couple of players transferring and as a result the next coach has a rough season or 2, so be it. I'm not expecting perfection. I just want our school to hold our athletic programs accountable and strive to being better and achieving national relevance - just like we do with academics, arts, etc.

What I see is a department going through the motions and feeling content with everything. This is because no one is holding their feet to the fire and keeping them accountable for our performances since if they never set any expectations to begin with, then no one can fire them.

Pride in our school is bigger than any one coach or player. It represents our university and our desire to be the best we can be at everything we do. It's even more frustrating because I truly think we have so much potential to become a Butler, Xavier, or Gonzaga, and that our athletic program will bring great recognition to our school. Yet, our lack of desire to dream big and achieve bigger goals is what is holding us back.

It is what it is at the end of the day, but I really wish our voices could be heard more in these strategic planning meetings for the school, because ultimately we are all Spiders and want our University to be the best at everything it can be

So I understand your premise but it’s pre-Hardt thinking. Keith Gill was not renewed for reasons mostly to do with a lackadaisical attitude around how we run our athletics. I don’t think you’ll see the same thing with Hardt. Time will tell, including some strong indicators after the A10 tournament.

I do agree with the second sentiment about dreaming big. I am not sure you’re likely to get this though, I think that kind of mandate comes from the BoT, not the president or the AD, and ours doesn’t seem particularly oriented to dream that way.

Then maybe we need to let them in on our dreams. Loudly.

I am going to believe that Hardt is going to review how we finished this year. Currently a five game losing streak. I believe we will beat Umass by 5 then lose to George Mason on the road. Considering how bad Mooney record is against VCU and George Mason is ridiculous. 8 years without an NCAA bid. I could careless about losing in the quarterfinals of the NIT. The problem is the money we spend isnt creating results on the court. Spent a ton of money on Robins Center? And yet we cant beat George Mason.
