Mooney says we still have an at-large chance

This would have been a time for him to just say "I'm not going to talk about the postseason -- We want to win as many games as possible the rest of the way and let that take care of itself."

By saying this, he just solidifies himself as being clueless and illogical.

I think he’s been listening to the national press who think he’s a good coach but they never watch this team week in and week out like we do.

Gilly's 16-2 comment and now this. There is not one ounce of self reflection, just deflection to some future goal that never will be met. And when the future arrives and it isn't met, Mooney will deflect again.

Every single player on this team and the coaches should be mad as hornets right now for such an underwhelming and underperforming first half of the season. Instead, we get flowery completely unrealistic and detached takes like this. I'm sure he said it with a big ole smile on his face too. His check cashes regardless of what happens.

What do you guys want the coach and players to say? Is them saying they’re going to give up on the season and that they suck the only thing that will suffice? I know I’d be pissed if they threw the towel in, I want to support a team that is going to keep fighting and not give up on the season. Do we think we’ll get an at large? No. But if you’re a coach what gain do you get by telling the team your season is over so why even both?

Either totally delusional, or a bald face liar. You choose.
This from the guy who oversaw a 27 point home loss to St Josephs whose only other A10 win was over powerhouse GW.

2 routes to NCAA - 1) win out regular season which is doubtful or 2) win A10 tournament where Mooney's history is not a good indicator.

Honestly, even winning out only gets us up to maybe 50 in the NET. 13–0 here we come.

Well if Torvik Simulation is any indication...
We are now NET 99
At 23-7 we are NET 61 and a 12 seed
At 22-8 loss at URI NET 71
Loss at Costco NET 72

Or 24-7 with home win vs GMU on 4/1 NET 58...

Or, we aren't happy with where we are at right now and we are working our butts off to make sure we get better, particularly on the defensive end, so that we can put ourselves in a position to make the NCAA in March. This team has a goal to play in the NCAA and so we need to get better to achieve that goal. Instead, we get I think it would be possible, look at our schedule. One makes you sound accountable, acknowledging the situation, puts pressure on a senior laden team to play better, the other just makes you sound pollyanic at best and clueless at worst.

As for our schedule thus far, we have beaten NO ONE who will help our resume and I really don't see any teams left that will move the needle far as a signature win. Davidson was our main chance to get a big W in conference, we didn't do it. Who do we have left that would be a really good win????

the only Q1 opportunity remaining in the regular season is @ VCU.

Agreed, I'm not sure what schedule he is looking at. Maybe he had Duke's schedule in his hand by accident and was like, 'Wow, if we beat UNC, Florida State, Virginia Tech and UVA, we're DEFINITELY making it!'

Do we think we will go 31-0 this season? No. But we will keep trying to achieve that this season.

And is the A-10 Tourney cancelled?

That 12-seed at 23–7 is an auto bid, not an at-large. He has a handful of teams on the "first teams out" list with a higher chance of a bid, but the simulation of us at 15–3 gives us the regular-season championship and thus the auto bid placeholder.

As it stands right now, we have one Q1 game left on the schedule...at VCU. And they're at #74, so a hair's breadth away from slipping to Q2, especially considering it would involve us beating them. :)

And that is why I don't usually attempt these simulations on the fly...

So if SLU dropped to 76, and VCU to 77, our Quad 1 record would look great...

We've lost to every reasonably decent/good team we've played this year and to one really bad one, have no notable games left, and our coach is like "Yeah, we can definitely do this, no sweat!"

He didn't say "no sweat," but yes, I would really have liked to see some acknowledgment of how much of an uphill climb it is that he's talking about.

I don't expect him to say, "welp, all we have left is to focus on one week in March," but give me a realistic assessment beyond just the obvious "it would take a lot of wins."

Here's the actual press conference. There's a preliminary question from JOC about whether the team talks about NCAA that starts around the 5:20 mark, and Mooney has a decent bit to say about that...yes, they talk about it, but it doesn't change how they prepare for the next game and the next game, which makes sense. The follow-up about at-large chances comes at around 6:30 mark, and he didn't have much else to say beyond what was in the tweet.

Is BB the second guy asking questions? Whomever, it is asks the most inconsequential and softball questions. How much better is the offense when Gilly is scoring, really, that is your question.

Not altogether sure we will beat host LaSalle on Saturday.Explorers took URI down to the wire in Kingston on Wednesday evening.

That was a pretty ugly game. Watched a fair amount of the second half. Not much of an atmosphere at URI these days. LaSalle probably should have won though.

2 routes to NCAA - 1) win out regular season…….or 2) win A10 tournament
Option 1 assumes that the A10 gets two bids, which the various prognosticators currently believe is unlikely. I know people think that the A10 is a multi-bid league, but if UR somehow happens to win the league and doesn’t make it to the A10 final I wouldn’t bank on a trip to the NCAAs. Auto-bid or lots of hoping and praying.

In reality, even winning out in the regular season probably doesn't do enough for us. Because, say we lose our first game in the a10 tournament, then what? In reality, I think we need to win at least 15 straight from right now to have any chance of an at large bid.

Mooney said this to sell tickets. Selling a dream that won't happen this year. Currently 11-7 and not going anywhere. We aren't winning at VCU and more than likely losing at Rhode Island. So stop telling lies. Selling a fantasy.

What ever happened to taking it one game at a time? That is every coaches golden rule. This guy is an embarrassment to Princeton. What a moron.

All big time coaches would have said… “we dont think about that, that is out of our hands, we have to take it one game at a time and prepare as well as we can.” I mean the fact that he admits the players are talking about the NCAA is ridiculous. “When you have one eye on the task and one eye on the goal, it is likely you will never reach it.” This dope has had them thinking 4 months ahead i stead of on each sibgle game.

I think even most high school coaches would have known how to field such a question better!
