MoJo Watch

Actually no. Bryce transferred to Loyola Chicago I believe.

Mooney is definitely going to be staying busy with coaching staff searches. Seems like he is running out of options and as Eight Legger said on the later side for a coaching change too.
Boy,I’ve been out of it,You are so right.

Maybe Danny Manning? I thought he did a good job at Maryland when Turgeon up and quit.

Replacement - someone who played under Mooney? Odds?

Yeah, I mean coaches often jump around... That's what they do. Being on a more prominent staff at a more prominent school gives you a better chance at a head coaching gig in most cases. Can't blame anyone for moving on, but it would have been nice to hang onto MoJo a little longer. I think he helped our recruiting.

He went from Fairleigh Dickinson to Mason, to Richmond, to Butler. He has moved up every time. I would call that just the opposite of a problem, would call that someone who is very respected and wanted.
I don’t see any blue bloods on that list. Mostly, lateral moves.

Lol, he was fired in there somewhere.

I am only worried about Burton staying. The assistant coaches don’t seem to matter, nothing has changed in 17 years.

If you think a trajectory from FDU to Butler is "mostly lateral," I don't know what to say.

He was only "fired" because his boss Paulsen was fired. Unless you're talking about before that string when he was fired as head coach at GW. He was set up to fail there, inheriting that dumpster fire from Nero/Lonergan.

Not to be cynical here but I wonder if mojo is aware of Tyler’s impending decision which would fundamentally change the complexion(and results) of the team in 22-23.

Didn't Matta come out of retirement to take this job? Maybe he also sees an opportunity to move up to the HC position in a couple years at Butler?
Could be - Matta also had some off and on health issues at The Ohio State University.

I think this is a strike while the iron is hot type move. Given Mooney's track record, it doesn't look like he is leaving anytime soon so that removes the UR job from the equation. Also - we are not known for making multiple NCAA appearances in a row - which could help an assistant land a lower level head coaching job. So best bet - like Hovde and now Joseph - move up the ranks on the assistant side. Pay goes up. Name of school goes up. And you make a run or two at a bigger school, your name pops up for Head coach jobs much easier. Or like you say - maybe a spot where head coach retires or moves on and you can take over in a few years.

This stings a little bit, but in reality it is one of the signs of a successful program at our level that your coaches are desired and lured away by bigger schools. When your assistants stay forever or make lateral/downward moves that's a bad sign.

Agreed - I don't think if he knew Tyler was returning that he turns down this job at Butler. First and foremost - move to Butler gets a pay raise. Jordan, who was fired at Butler was making about 1.5 million a year, and I have to expect Matta commands more than that - maybe 2 million a year. So I think that trickles down to assistants as well. And I think the biggest thing is if Matta can turn Butler around quickly - more HC jobs might be interested, or with Matta being advanced in age - wait 5-6 years and maybe the Butler job could be yours. Either way - its better pay and better exposure in the short term, and long term has more possibilities than UR.

Only way UR is a better job would be if we were a consistent NCAA team, but that has not happened yet.

Maybe the next question to ask - any UR/Mooney alums out there that can be hired to the staff? We just added Peter Thomas - anyone else out there?

If were going to hire anyone with direct ties I guess I would prefer Kevin Anderson but feel we need a more seasoned top assistant. I'm not sure where he wound up since he's left Liberty.

Good point Ferrum - he left abrubtly and I have not seen his name surface anywhere. Which makes me nervous that something bad happened - but hopefully not.

This might not be a popular take on the board, but I would be fine with an ex Spider taking Mojo's spot. If there is another Mojo type out there, no question, go after him, but if not, we would be fine with the right ex Spider in here. The positives with this are sharing with recruits the fact that they have been here and done that. "This is why Richmond was a great fit for me and why it would be a great fit for you". This late in the game, I'm not sure we would find a better option than an ex Spider anyway. Mojo was a great fit here, but I'm not sure that many assistant coaches are big time difference makers out there. We will be fine with whoever we decide on.
