MoJo Watch

there was "zero chance" of a lot of crazy shit that has happened in the transfer and recruiting portal the past year
ok, but you know where FDU stands compared to Richmond as a basketball program and as a school, right? I'm not losing any sleep if MoJo went there. we might have lost someone, but not to FDU. nobody we offer is considering FDU.

Assuming he leaves, this is a very interesting situation. Does Mooney hire someone and slot him right into the lead assistant spot? I don't think he has anyone on staff who would elevate that high right now, does he? Probably needs to hire his two top assistants in this case.

sure, and you believe the billboard helped too.
pretty much a no-lose situation it seems. either you sign a petition and we fail, proving you're right. or we succeed and it's thanks to the petition. lol.
We all play our roles.

I think the move of hiring MoJo in the first place is exactly where Moon needs to keep his thought process if he needs to make a new hire. What MoJo brings to the table with experience and (I'm projecting here based on recent results) recruiting is very helpful to the program. He got put into a bad spot with a horrible AD at GW but also may have not been ready for an A10 head coaching gig at that point. But he got those reps and as a top assistant it seems to be working favorably for UR but because of those attributes, he becomes attractive to other schools too. So IMO Moon should think similarly if MoJo leaves - who are respected guys who may have moved too quickly to HC gigs and not succeeded but can bring a lot to a top assistant job, even if only for a few years?

Should we just hire Jamion Christian and keep the theme of hiring fired GW coaches?
Yes, he was the first guy who came to mind actually. Smart young coach. I know that he has the VCU mindset and style, so maybe it's not a fit, but I bet he would kill it on the recruiting trail for us.

Regarding Christian, the benefits of the GW HC pipeline are the similarities in league, academics and locations of the schools, so presumably the experience of targeting players who fit the league skills wise, the academic profile and in the general recruiting areas are all pluses that would allow him to transition smoothly. But hopefully we keep MoJo.

Yep. Although, we still need to hire someone else regardless, and Christian doesn't have a job right now. Maybe he would take our #2 spot.

A little diversity of the staff wouldn't hurt either. Think about who we are recruiting and then think about sending the Will Gipe's of the world to meet with these guys.

Does JOC have inside info that MoJo isn't going anywhere?

Following spring attrition and addition, roster shuffling has ended. With former Spiders captain Peter Thomas moving from Campbell to Richmond’s coaching staff this week, Richmond’s 13 scholarship players and three assistants under Coach Chris Mooney are set for 2022-23. [...]

There will be two new assistant coaches for second consecutive season. Kevin Hovde left for Florida and Rob Jones went to Liberty. They were replaced by Will Gipe, promoted from director of program development, and Thomas. Mooney enters his 18th season.

Let’s hope so. Also see that Dji being a point guard appears to be a well kept secret. SpiderDad may object to JOC’s comment on that front.

I don't see how going to MSU would make sense for Mojo right now. Whoever goes there will be the 3rd assistant, meaning they would be behind Doug Wojcik and Mark Montgomery. He is clearly the top assistant here, and I think he is right where he needs to be if he wants to be a head coach again somewhere.

Nelson's a true point in that he can really only play point.
Dji's a combo guard who can play 1, 2, or even 3.
Goose, Marcus, and maybe Roche can help with getting the ball across midcourt, but aren't PGs ... imo.

Just depends what he values most. He might get a raise to go to a place he knows, which also happens to be in the Big 10, even as a third assistant. But there's certainly good value in being a lead assistant here. Hope he stays.

Well said, EL. I should have worded my post better. There could certainly be reasons why it would make sense for him to go to MSU. I was looking at it from only a wanting to be a head coach again view. But, yes, definitely hope he stays.

Lol I do but if the Richmond beat writer can’t get it right 🤷🏼‍♂️ I think it’s only a secret in terms of Va region. Everyone in NC knows it, those he smacked on the Adidas circuit know it. His size is something that maybe people around here overlook as a true pg. Yeah you can call him a combo but he’s truly a pg. An old school one at that who loves to create and pass. But hey it is what it is 😀. I just want to see him on the floor having an impact and helping us get back to the tourney ✊🏼🕷🏀
