Duke 16, Richmond 15 – Overtime
Just over a minute into the overtime period, fifth-year senior Sean Lowrie cut through the middle, catching a pass from Cameron Badour from up top, and letting it rip with a defenseman draped all over him to secure the victory for Duke. The win marks the Blue Devils’ third over Richmond in the past year.
The Spiders got hot in the first quarter, taking a 6-3 lead heading into the second. They then built onto that lead, getting ahead 8-4 following a Taylor Shoults goal at the 8:59 mark in the second. But the Blue Devils answered in a big way as freshman Dyson Williams put the team on his back and caught fire as the half came to a close.
Williams scored four consecutive goals, including a last second buzzer beater, to close out the half and tie things up at 8-8. The Ontario native also scored the first goal of the third, making it five straight from the freshman.
After Williams put the Blue Devils up 9-8 early in the third they never trailed again. The Spiders were able to comeback from down 14-10 at the end of the third, starting the fourth on a four-goal run to tie things up at 14-14. The two teams went back-and-forth in the final minutes of regulation, making it a 15-15 tie and forcing overtime. Ryan Lanchbury scored the final goal of regulation for the Spiders that forced overtime.
Duke was led by Williams with seven goals, while JP Basile had five points (1G/4A) and Owen Caputo tallied four points (3G/1A). JT Giles-Harris also had a good game, scooping up six ground balls and causing four turnovers.
Shoults led the way for Richmond with six points (3G/3A). Adrian Nash also had three goals for the Spiders.
Andrew Bonafede saw the majority of the minutes in goal for Duke, making three saves. Jack Rusbuldt was, no doubt, the better goalie on this particular day, making 11 saves for the Spiders.
