Mens: @ Umass Sat 1/4 noon ESPN+

I was trying to believe to. It's just bad that every season our at large hopes are dashe before we get to conference play. And the mooneyites tell us , we'll its just impossible for mid majors to get bids, so what does it matter.
Yeah I feel this too. I want the Spiders to win every game but the OOC was so disheartening with so many bad losses, meaning winning the A10 tourney is the only hope, that I watched yesterday’s game with a sense of detachment. Like, let’s win but I’m not investing emotion bc it’s likely we will lose. So even the win doesn’t feel as good when you watch games like that. It also made me start to play the stupid what-if game which is never good - what if UR had gone 11-2 OOC, etc.

UMass was also so terrible it was tough to take lots of positives away. (And some issues like the patented 2nd half scoring drought at 12m mark) persist.

Yes, but he won on the road. I've heard it's hard to do that.

Nearly impossible to win on the road in conference. Oh but VCU won by 20 at Loyola?
While it is used too often to accept losses.

I have heard if an average team played all average teams
away they would be 9-22 at home 22-9…

Totally agree Vegas - the tribute to Beck was over the top good with the explanation of the "10" on Spider uniforms and showing a picture of Beck. The memory of how nice a guy Beck was came flooding back...................
The UMass broadcaster is Jay Burnham, who was the Flying Squirrels' play by play guy for a number of years and did some TV for vcu. He grew up in Massachusetts and went home for that job.

I didn't say anything about CM, say something positive about the school the players or anything.
This isnt a board about the quality of the U of Richmond as an institution of higher learning, its a board discussing the basketball program. This year in particular, I dont see any reasons to be positive at all about the state of the basketball program for the reasons I explained. You want to cheer for a 12 win season in a horrendous A10 after a putrid OOC that offers nothing but giving CM supporters reason to claim a marginally successful A10 season, you go right ahead. Im not onboard.

I think there is a lot to be positive about in the women's program

UMass might be the worst team in the league and they lack much of a home court advantage. So, I'm not reading into our 2-0 start too much.

That said, the A-10 is a weak league. Dayton, VCU, St. Bonnies and possibly SLU now that Avila is back are probably a cut above. The rest of the league is very mid but still possess the ability to beat any of those 4 (as GW showed us on Saturday).

Trap is parroting how the PQ and Hardt's of the world are looking at it, but could we get to 8-9 wins against this competition. Sure we can. Should that be anything to celebrate, absolutely not. If we get to 8-9 wins, we are still a sub .500 team, that should in a normal college basketball program cause some uncomfortable feelings and discussions within the program. The firing of an assistant coach some sort of ultimatum to the coach things need to much better next year, some type of communications to the fans that we demand and will be better. We are not a normal program though, so we will get none of that.

Here is what we will get. Hardt will do one AM 910 interview in April discussing the season and how we had a tough start but fought hard in a good A-10 league and really looking forward to next year and are young players. Mooney will get a couple softball questions from JOC that he will easily deflect. Both will complain about the how hard it is for non BCS programs like Richmond to compete in this new "era" of college basketball.

The A10 is not a strong a league. Still expect VCU, Dayton, and looks like the Bonnies to rise to the top. St. Louis I think will be a tough out the more experience they get together. But after that - your going to see a lot of close games. Which is why I think this team getting 9-10 conference wins is not as crazy as everyones thinks.
who's stronger outside of the P5 leagues? just the Mountain West according to the rankings.
the A10 is a strong league. it's ranked #7 out of 31 conferences.

I do agree with what RichmondNative said ... it's a very balanced league this year. a couple stronger teams up top and a couple weaker teams at the bottom, but the middle 10 or so are all comparable. most games will be a war. it's a fun conference.

Our top minutes guys in order:
Hunt 35.5 (senior)
Tyne 30.7 (soph)
Roumoglou 25.5 (junior)
Neskovic 21.3 (grad)
Beagle 20.5 (junior)
Roche 19.1 (senior)
Walz 18.0 (junior)
White 17.8 (grad)
Tanner 16.4 (soph)

No freshman in top9, only 2 soph. If anyone suggests this is a young team, they need to understand the roster construction better.

I am gauging "strong" on the number of NCAA bids the league will have locked up before selection sunday and without the A10 tourney winner. Recently - A10 has been a 1 bid league. If the A10 can get 2-3 teams in for sure before A10 championship - then I will agree, its a strong league. Right now - its too early tell. Best bets right now are Dayton, VCU, and Bonnies.

That's completely true. But u know how the UR pr machine works TBone. next year the focus will be on the young incoming players. #nextbestclass. The 2 redshirts, and 3 incoming frosh. Coming off a likely losing season the focus won't be on the named group above, when probably 5 of 9 won't even be here. 4 out of eligibility, and have to think we lose 1 to transfer given the times & our own recent transfer rate too. The future is bright.

I know how this goes, just think it’s hard when countered with reality.

Team is old, but we have a very low “minutes continuity”. That means we have a lot of guys who have barely played together, we are a bottom team in that number.

I understand that. There’s a real art to finding the next level of rationalization.

I’m not saying that’s what you’re doing of course…just saying at some point a spade is a spade.
