Announcing the fist annual Beckwith Alumni Game Weekend that day before the weekend is so on par. Glad we are doing this, it is a great idea, but you can't generate excitement for this when you are announcing it the Friday before.that is great but how in the world are we announcing it the day before the game is played! This is Marketing 101.
Yeah - surprised they didn't announce it during warm-ups of the game. Why not even run an in-game promotion, where maybe a fan or two are picked out and if they can complete a shooting contest or maybe trivia game from 80's Spider Basketball history - and if they win, they get to pick out a jersey they want.that is great but how in the world are we announcing it the day before the game is played! This is Marketing 101.
Trap, looks like you’re getting your retro game sooner than you thought and jerseys auctioned off afterwards for a foundation in Beckwith’s honor. This Saturday against Davidson. Email message from Mooney below:
“Fellow Spiders –
In many ways, my 20th season at Richmond has been unlike any that came before it. From players to coaches to managers to support staff, we’ve been working extremely hard to get back to the top of the A-10 with a roster that includes nine newcomers, the most in any of my seasons with the Spiders. We’ve experimented with new offensive sets, new defensive principles, and new lineup combinations as we look to find all possible competitive advantages. While our results have been inconsistent, I’m proud of our team’s effort, attitude, and desire to continue improving, and I believe our best basketball is yet to come.
Another way this season has been different is that it’s my first at Richmond without Greg Beckwith at our broadcast table. Scott Ungerer has done a tremendous job in his first season as our primary TV and radio analyst, but it’s still been difficult without Greg at our practices, on our road trips, and in the Robins Center on game days. I miss seeing him standing on the midcourt line with a microphone in his hand and a grin spread across his face during our on-air interviews immediately following a Spiders win. I know many of you miss him as well.
While it’s tough to communicate all Greg meant to Spider Basketball, we’re going to try on Saturday as part of our first ever Greg Beckwith Alumni Weekend. Former players, coaches, managers, and staff from every generation of Spider Basketball will be in the Robins Center as we face Davidson at 6 PM. We’ll be wearing throwback jerseys created in collaboration with adidas, Greg’s longtime employer, and the newly announced Greg Beckwith Foundation, which will provide scholarships to those interested in pursuing careers in the athletics apparel industry.
The jerseys, which will be auctioned off to raise funds for the Foundation, are inspired by those Richmond wore in the mid-1980s, when the Spiders burst on the national scene with Greg at point guard. We’ll honor his service to Spider Basketball in a pre-game ceremony and celebrate all of our Spiders at halftime and throughout the game. It promises to be a special night for those who love Richmond Basketball, and I hope to see you there.
Thank you for your continued support of the Spiders.”
Yep, email.Did you get this via email? I didn't get this - did get the Jolt and email about VCU tickets being available today, so may be another great piece of work by our marketing ops team to not send to the correct lists (but at least it was proofed).
For real -- NIL for the Beckwith Foundation.I wish they sold those throwbacks at the UR spider shop. I would buy one asap.
Yeah, but some of us may not be around then.someday we'll be wearing throwback uni's with those stupid looking shorts we wore a couple years ago.
The ones that made it look like everyone's junk had a target around it? Definitely the worst design I've ever seen.someday we'll be wearing throwback uni's with those stupid looking shorts we wore a couple years ago.
I have seen people by the exit doors handing out WaWa coupons this season too. The only catch last year and this year is that they could only really do it in the non-conference schedule because the coupons expired on Dec 31st.From an in-game "promotion", they call our 3 pointers Wawa 3 pointers. Last season they gave Wawa freebie coupons then discount coupons when leaving building after the game. This season in 2025, they give nothing. Question - so what is the promotion behind a Wawa 3 pointer? Just curious how this works.
expired in what year?I have seen people by the exit doors handing out WaWa coupons this season too. The only catch last year and this year is that they could only really do it in the non-conference schedule because the coupons expired on Dec 31st.
expired in what year?
Well, the jerseys should have been out weeks ago for auction. It should have been promoted at every game the past few weeks and heavily on Saturday night. So, not shocked they are not getting a lot of bids, because we haven't really done that much to promote it.Well - this has the looks of possibly backfiring big time.
Still early - but as of Monday morning, there are 17 jerseys available for auction, and only 4 of them have bids on them. Opening Bid for most is $210 - so maybe a little too rich for people wanting to spend at UR? But this will not look good if at the end of the day - they only give away 4-5 jerseys with limiting bidding.
Also possible in true auction style - people waiting till final minutes to bid.
I also don't understand why can't they just say "Dusan Neskovic jersey" why does it have to be the mysterious "Throwback jersey No. 7" 😏
Interesting that jersey with the highest bid is Jack Graham's number. It say's game worn, so would assume they would have their names on the back if that is the case. And yes, it would be really helpful to have the players name with the jersey. Could be a NIL thing though. All in all it is very confusing which probably part of the reason most of the jersey have zero bids on them.
They said during the game that they were selling throwback Beckwith #10 jerseys at the game Saturday night. Did anyone see them? Are they going to be available beyond that one game?
I believe the #10 throwback jersey did have Beckwith on it. I saw a number of them being purchased and worn at the game. I didn’t notice any of the other Beckwith themed gear though.Looks like it. There was a tweet that said they were selling the Beckwith ones at the RC. Maybe the Beckwith ones had his name on back. to possibly increase sales. Tho if u adhere to the era he played, as sman pointed out, they wouldn't.
But I kinda doubt these are also available at the online URspidershop.
Thanks. Makes sense now. Still should have the players name associated with jersey on auction site. If I were interested, I would want to know which player wore that jersey.
I would like to see this idea. Hawaii let fans design a uniform for their womens basketball team and one was chosen and will be worn for a game and then auctioned off.
