Mancuso

If nothing else, at least it sounds like Rocco is planning for the future (and not going anywhere else)

Honestly, Broadus had thrown about four passes in his career. He's a bigger guy and can run better than Clise or Chenault, but we were going to have similar issues with any of them.

If Johnson doesn't play, I think that's a middle finger from Rocco to the administration, just like the fourth quarter on Saturday may have been.

You don't remember Broadus in the playoffs last year when Kyle was banged up? And he's been the back-up QB for two years, hundreds of reps. No comparison between him and Johnson at this point.

I really don't think that Coach Rocco would do something as passive/aggressive as that. He has way too much character. I think that it is more likely that Coach may realize that regardless of the QB, we will not be able to perform anywhere near the level we would be with Kyle, regardless of whether it is Abel, Clise, Chenault, Mancuso, Johnson, or one of the other two freshmen listed on the roster as QBs.

And I believe that he is seriously preparing for the future of the team and the redshirts he wants are a very critical part of his long-term plan.

He did mention Abell in his press conference yesterday. That would be an interesting look.

What was his injury? It happened vs. JMU IIRC.

Let's support the staff and team to put our best effort out there Saturday. They deserve it. I believe Danny has one thing on his mind at present, how does he give our team its best chance at beating NC A&T. Once the season is over we can focus on the future.

It's hard to believe everyone is questioning Coach Rocco.

First of all not everyone per NCAA can dress for away games- something like 65 can dress.

Secondly, Coach Rocco was doing what we all want was to protect the future by redshirting Johnson and Mancuso. Once Broadas became unavailable that made the situation much more dire. Lauletta gets hurt and I think the feeling was if we could stay ahead versus WM then we could keep running the ball and still win. Jacob's drop and Rubin's miscall screwed that up. But if we get that call we are up 20-12 and the game is entirely different- we can control the game and continue to pound them- WM was forced to play catch up and couldn't pound us like they did.

Now that the reality is in front of us and we have a good pairing I believe Rocco will do whatever it takes to put us in the best position to win. If that means Johnson or Mancuso burns his shirt and redshirts next year then he will do that. He has said all along that he will field the best team to win.

He will not tell anyone outside the program he thoughts because he doesnt want A&T to know what he is going to do. To think that Coach Rocco who analyzes everything is just being careless or lax is simply way off base. To think he is going to sink this year and put someone at QB who will not give us the best chance to win is not seeing things clearly.

I am calling that Johnson will start Saturday- and we will win two games.

Spiders lost star quarterback, don't want to lose impact of star receivers

Richmond lost its star quarterback. The Spiders now are trying to come up with ways to avoid losing the impact of quality receivers who no longer will benefit from the passing of Kyle Lauletta or an experienced backup.

Lauletta, UR's junior quarterback, suffered a season-ending knee injury in the second quarter of Saturday's 34-13 loss at William & Mary. Richmond (8-3) plays MEAC runner-up North Carolina A&T (9-2) on Saturday at Robins Stadium in the first round of the FCS playoffs, and identifying a starting quarterback is coach Danny Rocco's first order of business.

He said Monday the Spiders continue to work through that. A few weeks ago, an injury to Lauletta would have been followed by the insertion of fifth-year senior David Broadus, a backup with experience and a part-time tailback. Broadus did not dress for UR's past two games, and Rocco twice explained Broadus' absence by saying "coach's decision," without elaboration.

Monday, Rocco said it was "highly unlikely" Broadus would play Saturday. The coach again declined to say why Broadus is unavailable.

After Lauletta's injury at W&M, Richmond used a pair of inexperienced players at quarterback, junior Jake Clise, a former walk-on at LSU, and true freshman Reid Chenault. Neither was effective. Clise left with a shoulder problem, Rocco said.

"We were unable to really generate any balance on offense," Rocco said. "(The Tribe) took advantage of it, to their credit."

Before Lauletta's injury, Spiders receivers Brian Brown, Tyler Wilkins, Jarmal Bevels and tight end Garrett Hudson had been major offensive components as pass-catchers this season.

"When Kyle was distributing the ball, he was just going through his progressions and he was going to throw the ball to the open guy, where the ball should go, or the read," Rocco said. "I do think we've got to be able to calculate a little bit better here this week to guarantee some touches."

Before Saturday's game, Lauletta was averaging 291.5 passing yards, which led the CAA and ranked among the top 10 in the FCS. Sophomore Kevin Johnson played in three games last season as a true freshman behind Lauletta, but Rocco intends to redshirt Johnson this year.

"I don't think that holding him out for 11 weeks and then triggering him is the right thing to do," Rocco said. "There might be a short-term argument that would say it is the right thing to do. But I don't think it's fair to (Johnson) and I'm going to hold my ground on that. And if it costs us, it costs us this year."

Well that's disappointing. Johnson isn't going to play QB for is next year, either, so then he's down to two years of eligibility. By then, Mancuso may be starting, so what's the point? Saving someone who might get you to the playoffs one day vs. using him to help you IN the playoffs seems like an easy decision to me.

Eight, you just said Johnson is probably going to play next year for us because Kyle will be back. So why not not play him this year and red shirt next year? Either way he has two years left.

One way to read it is that Johnson isn't ready this year. Or at least, that's my takeaway.

And we're finding out there is no guarantee Kyle will play a full season, injuries happen. We need solid backups and that's one of the very few things I would fault the coaching staff with the QB position.

I said Johnson is probably NOT going to play for us next year because Kyle will be back. I want Johnson to play Saturday. Then redshirt him next year or don't. I agree with you.

Why redshirt next year? He's got a boat load of freshman qbs coming up behind him and he'll be a junior. We can't be this poorly prepared for a QB injury in the future.

Based upon what I have heard of Johnson's ability, I suspect he may see much more playing time next year than Broadus did this year. That and we will have a very good backup QB.

QB Depth chart:
Lauletta RJr
Broadus RSr
Johnson So (redshirting)
Clise RJr
Mancuso Fr (redshirting)
Chenault Fr
Tsangeos Fr
Gastrock Fr

Chenault is a walk-on. Are Tsangeos and/or Gastrock on scholarship and redshirting?

If Rocco doesn't burn either redshirt, how likely is it that both Johnson and Mancuso see action next year, with Kyle, Clise and all those other backups?
QB2, unless it's a change of pace like Broadus, doesn't see a lot of action with these Spiders. We don't have a lot of runaway games.

I can think of a couple of possibilities, both reflecting long term thinking by Rocco:
He is waiting until later this week to find out if Kyle's damage is even worse than feared, and he'd need Johnson/Mancuso as QB1 to begin next year.
The competition for QB1 in 2018 is very close, and he doesn't want to give up any eligibility on the back end.

Just one question why would you have redshirts on the Depth chart? Did they get any snaps with the first or second team during the year?

I was really just listing all the QBs so there's a picture of who we'll have next year - plus any QBs we recruit.
I doubt anyone but Lauletta and Broadus took snaps with the first team until last week, and I don't know who ran the scout team.

I'm just asking the logic behind preserving two redshirts in what is essentially an emergency situation when we'll have so much flexibility next year. If Clise were healthy it wouldn't be such a concern. I guess neither Johnson nor Mancuso are our best option.

Anyone going to practice? Time of practice? Wouldn't think it would take very long to figure out who's the man

I would be very disappointed if the decision is made to "save" someone for next year – in the hopes that he could help us make the playoffs then – when we are IN THE PLAYOFFS this year, right now and.

If "he" (Johnson or Mancuso) can't help us right now, then I understand. But if "he" is a better option to help us win a playoff game or three THIS YEAR, then burn the shirt. This should be a no-brainer.

I love it. Just put three of them in the backfield at once and you'll never know who's going to run or throw.
funny you mentioned that I have rooting interest in VMI. they get a lot of undersized athletes so throw teams a curve do exactly that. Have three QBs capable of running or throwing, it be fun to watch, May not win a lot of games but they haven't won many until this year anyway.

1999, when FAMU got to the quarterfinals. The MEAC has lost 18 straight playoff games since then.

Throwing the ball is one thing, throwing to our receivers and not their DB's is another. If we need more than 10 points we are in trouble.

I heard Johnson ran scout team.
