Mancuso

Johnson played last year, so he would not be able to redshirt again. I get the hesitation, but this is our season here. Gotta do everything possible to keep it alive. I don't think we can run our way to a victory in the playoffs with Clise at QB, and it's a big ask of Chenault to step in as a freshman walkon. Johnson was a highly regarded recruit and has two full years in the system. He can run, too. Let's see what we have here.

Can you not redshirt any season? I thought you have 5 years to play 4 seasons and can redshirt any of those years? If we burned his RS he'd be a junior next year and could RS then I thought?

Let's be honest if KL has what we think will he even be ready for the start of the season? I don't understand the logic behind this. If you have 2 scholarship players you expect to backup your starting QB why not burn a RS on one of those two and attempt to RS that person the following year?

And I agree while it's tough to burn a RS this is the playoffs. I'd rather lose trying to win with your best option at qb rather then tying an arm behind your back.

I guess the one good thing is that Rocco doesn't want to burn these shirts makes me think he's still planing on being here long term....

You're right. I am not sure what I was thinking last night. Got myself confused somehow. As I recall, they were originally hoping to redshirt him last year, and obviously they were hoping to redshirt him this year (the same way they did Lauletta in his second year). But yes, if he played this year too, he could still redshirt next year. Though I think as a junior, that probably would be a little odd and might not sit as well with him. Who knows though.

As to Rocco not sacrificing the future for "one or two games" as Stonewall said, I disagree. You aren't guaranteed to make the playoffs every year. When you do make it, you should be all in. It's like a game 7 in baseball – there's no tomorrow, so pitch everyone you need to pitch. If we are going into the playoffs hoping that Clise and Chenault can lead us to a championship, I feel bad for the rest of the team.

We have 11 starters out with injury. Our special teams suck and the defense is non-existent at this point. I wouldn't waist anyone now.

You would not be waisting anyone. Aside from the fact that it's the playoffs and you play to win and advance, Johnson won't play next year anyway. What am I missing? Put the QB on the field that gives us the best chance to advance in the playoffs.

Just ask the nationals about karma of holding out your best option in the playoffs for some future payoff.

Play the best you can.

Now if neither Johnson nor Mancuso are ready. Certainly now worth burning their redshirt if you're going to hand off alll game. Someone has to be ready to make some throws.

I have no inside information and by no means am I suggesting that Johnson would not want to burn his redshirt if he was asked to start next week. But these decisions are much more than just the coach and what fans want. The player has a say in things as well.

When Johnson gave his commitment to UR, the university and coach Rocco made a commitment to him to do what is best for not just the team but also his development/career. They made the decision in the best interest of Johnson and the program to redshirt him this year. They have lived that commitment for the all year and I understand why they don't want to veer from that plan now.

Would I prefer to see Johnson start over an injured QB and a walk-on true freshman? Of course I do, but I respect the decision to maintain his redshirt year.

How do we know Lauletta will even be ready for the start of next season? How do we know he won't get injured next year? If that happens then we will be glad that Johnson kept his redshirt year.

I suspect, even with a healthy Lauletta next year, Johnson will get some snaps and good experience as the backup next year, similar to Broadus this year.

Just somthing to consider.

There are other backups we can use next year. One of them is currently hurt. We should assume (?) he will not be hurt next year.
Johnson knows he is the heir apparent to start in 2018-2019.
What is better experience for development - playoff football now, or garbage time next year?

I know it's been brought up before, but why not burn his redshirt now and then redshirt him sophomore year? Didn't Kyle redshirt his sophomore year? It's not unprecedented

count me in favor of playing the best qb on the roster, if that means burning a redshirt, so be it.

I agree, Our situation now is in part because we don't have a well practiced backup. Who was considered the back up once Broadus disappeared? It was so late in the season whomever it was, wasn't ready. I really don't want us to lose Saturday, it would be very tough to swallow, but I don't see this depleted team going deep into the playoffs and blowing a kids year, playing for a depleted team, with what I'm guessing is very little first team practice is just not a good use of resources.

Whatever major adjustments we make on offense will surprise NC AT and may help us pick up a tough win, it will not surprise ND.

We need good attendance we need every 12th man being as loud as they can be Saturday.

The best QB on our roster is still mysteriously unavailable ("coach's decision").
Coach's or School's decision? I have no inside information on what this is about but if it's violating team rules, Ok. If he is guilty of committing a crime and it's none of our business what, Ok. But If it's one of those things you're guilty until proven innocent and a school decision that's a different situation.

Wrong.Johnson will be a redshirt sophomore next year.He played in 2015
as a true frosh.Mancuso will be a redshirt frosh next year.Clise will be a senior next season.

Current players, particularly seniors, deserve best chance possible to win. Believe DR and staff will not cheat team out of best chance to be competitive and move on.

I agree with Mo. I think that's even more reason to use Johnson if the coaches feel like he's our best available QB.

You guys were both *sort of* right. If Johnson plays in the playoffs, he's a Junior next year. If he doesn't, he's a redshirt soph.

Honestly, i have no clue why he would have even dressed for William and Mary if there was no intention of him playing in an emergency situation. We had the emergency.

Mancuso, BTW, didn't travel with the team. I saw Manuco and about half dozen other players walking through the parking lot to the stadium mid-morning.

^This^.

I know the program used to dress everyone for the away W&M game, even walk-ons. That might be it, but based on your Mancuso observation it doesn't sound like that was the case Saturday.

We aren't going to burn Mancuso. I know I started this thread but after hearing Rocco's comments and hearing how little reps he gets in practice he isn't playing. JOC reported Rocco basically said today it isn't fair to burn Johnson this late in the season. It'll be Clise or Chenault.

Link?

Danny's last sentence is pretty clear, but if I'm Johnson, I see this as my opportunity.

I've wondered who got the snaps in practice, since last week? Who got the 3rd string snaps all year? How many snaps does a 3rd string QB get during the season? Broadus has had issues in the past, was he really the best backup?

Why on earth do we have so many freshman QBs and so many redshirting?
