So if we were in control to try to salvage this season and then let the off-season decisions happen, what other lineup changes would you consider? The current one isn’t working any better than the first and Cayo just doesn’t seem capable of being the player he was in ‘19-20 or the Kentucky game.

Today proved to me that we need Dji in the game much more that he has seen minutes to date. Wilson defense sure is good and glad he hit the 3 today be sadly he is an liability to consistent scoring,

Option 1 - the Twin towers as my Spider friend likes to call them - Gilly, Dji, Tyler, Grant, Grace with Wilson, Nick, cayo still getting good minutes

Option 2: guard focused - Gilly, Dji, Nick, Tyler, Grant with the same old model of Matt in for Grant and cayo still getting 20 min a game, and Nick for spot stints

others?

not sure how Gus fits in when he returns - he wasn’t the same player last year given Covid and the groin

Draw names out of a hat five minutes before tip. Who the hell cares, our chance of an at large bid is over anyway. Win the a10 tourney or we miss the NCAAs. Again. Like we do every goddamn year under this moron coach. The next 20+ games are basically a glorified set of practices for the a10s.

I like the plan.

We are better off playing 4 on 5 than putting Grace out there. Crabtree and Dji should get all his minutes.

Thanks for staying on the topic ... so option 2 or an option 3 with Cayo still starting but Dji for Wilson ?

Mooney doesn’t show up. One of the Assitant coaches takes over the game. Best line up change possible.
Hilarious but still hoping this thread remains focused on what can be done realistically for the Wofford game and the rest of the season

I’d like to see Dji get many more minutes. I think as Crabtree gets more minutes post injury, he can be a useful rotation guy. If the other team has good bigs, you limit Cayos minutes.

I’m serious, Mooney comes down with a mild case of the flu and the coach that does the inbounds plays takes over………Tarrant and Geotz

Patrick Beilein could get bored with the Syracuse Stallions any moment .. but lord now I went off topic.

Sorry, didn’t know I had to go with your options or else.
Sorry - I was serious about thanking you for your comment about being on topic - I think we have enough Fire Mooney threads (likely justified) already ... back to your point - hope Crabtree can find his place but seems real slow to me so far this year

My wishful thinking……it’s true though, SADLY this year is quickly becoming a rebuilding year

Hmmm, good idea. We hire JB, with a clause to cede to Patrick year 3 with JB staying on as consultant for two years

Still haven't heard the real details of why PB resigned at Niagara before his 1st season started - but he was 35 or so at the time and hope he gets a 2nd chance for a college program soon.

Going to be watching FGCU tonight and seeing if we are missing Weir's large frame or not ...

I’ve always said it should be:

Jacob
Dji
Tyler
Nate
Grant

The starting lineup to me isn’t really where things go sideways except I think we’ve been wrong at the 2G. I feel like we are in trouble when we bring Nick in as the 2G and when we go Golden/Grace together. God forbid all three play together, that’s a defensive sieve.

CM has to isolate the defensive weaknesses. That could be minimizing the minus defenders from playing together or it could require retooling how they play, perhaps zone when certain guys are in or limiting risk with Jacob staying on ball rather than steal-hunting.

We have failed year after year after year to recruit athletic, 6'8 or taller players, or pull them off the transfer portal. Cayo has been pretty good for us, but he is under sized.

We have zero "bucket getters" in the back court. Gilyard can score but gets locked by taller stronger players at end game. You really need a guy like that at the two, unless you have Kevin anderson. Love Zay, and Dji coming on strong- but yet again big hole on the roster this year.

Allow me to introduce you to the Kevin Bacon game!

I think if the opposing team plays three quick guards, Wilson has to play a decent amount. If they have more size, Dji needs to be in there. I’d prefer more Burton at the 4 and Dji or Crabtree more at the 3, and less Cayo.

I think we should go young as possible. Wilson, Burton, Bailey, . Play for the future at this point, but we know Mooney won't do that. I don't know why. It's not like he's in danger of losing his job.

I would start Bailey and give him more minutes. He will need to grow into it, but I think he will. Also, more Crabtree, less Sherod & Cayo. Also agree with plenty of time for Wilson, but he has shown repeatedly that he is not YET a good option at end of close games.

Add Goose when/if he ever gets back. Agree with some of the others who have said blow it up and play for the future.

Yeah aligned with my thoughts ... still not sure after his injuries if Crabtree is the same player that had a good freshman year at Tulane.
Get Randolph with seemingly a bit of attitude some minutes too.

Unless we come up against a team that has a ton of size, I’d rather go small and fast. Gilly, Dji, Wilson/Crabtree, Tyler, Grant. Tyler is strong/athletic enough to give up a little size on D and still be able to handle most 4’s. We’ll be better on ball defending and hopefully get out and run on teams.

Gilyard, Dji, Crabtree, Burton, Golden.
Cayo has taken steps backwards on his FT’s and contested shots, and he doesn’t consistently rebound well. Burton’s athleticism and strength likely make him a better post defender than Cayo, and playing him at the 4 keeps him (our best rebounder) closer to the paint for defensive rebounds.
Wilson is a liability on offense at this point. When Goose is healthy, he can have a shooting contest with Dji and Crabtree. Best 2 shooters of those 3 starts.

It’s a moot point though as I don’t expect any more lineup shakeups from Mooney. I’m surprised he benched Sherod in the first place.

Nice work Spider-Man. Definitely not going to see this sort of development time share, but does look like a good plan. Also shows that once Goose comes back it is going to be even more of a puzzle.

It really does come down to Gilly, Golden, and Burton and then whoever is playing best on any given day along with some degree of matchup strategy.

I am hoping Gilly comes out more after he breaks the steals record, but that would be historic if that happened. The other guards definitely need more experience.
