New York Giants quarterback Kyle Lauletta threw a pass to running back Saquon Barkley during the team's organized team activities in late May.

Former University of Richmond quarterback Kyle Lauletta has a three-day window to impress the New York Giants’ coaching staff starting Tuesday. The Giants start their mandatory mini-camp, the last time the team will be together until training camp.

Since the Giants selected Lauletta in the fourth round of the NFL Draft in late April, they picked up a fourth quarterback, 30-year-old journeyman Alex Tanney. Starter Eli Manning (37), second-year player Davis Webb (23) and Lauletta (23) are the other Giants’ QBs.

The Giants have a couple of other players with area connections: defensive lineman Kerry Wynn (27), who’s from Louisa County and played at Richmond, and former William & Mary cornerback B.W. Webb (28), who’s from Newport News.

First day report for Kyle:

Quarterback Update
For those who were expecting a battle this year between Davis Webb and rookie Kyle Lauletta, well, there doesn’t appear to be such a battle right now.

Lauletta, as has previously been noted, is trying to get his feet wet and adjust to the speed of the NFL level whereas Webb is literally light years ahead not just of the rookie but where Webb himself was at this point last year.

Lauletta’s biggest challenge is in making the reads in the short window that’s afforded to him. As a result, he holds onto the ball longer than probably desired which, if he doesn’t start speeding things up, could lead to him absorbing a lot of sacks.

And as probably expected, Lauletta comes up with several “safe throws of the short and intermediate routes, putting just enough zip on the ball to get it through.

His deep passes have run hot and cold for the most part as he continues to build up a sense of timing with hitting his receivers in stride. With all that said, Lauletta is certainly not a bust—he is a rookie quarterback who is trying to get the game to slow down.”

Kerry has proven that if he stays healthy, he can contribute big time. Wish the injury bug would not have bit him so often at UR.
Both these guys are very humble. On Kyle I remember when he started at UR he had a few too many interceptions and I hope he
starts differently for the Giants. He definitely has the smarts to catch on quickly.

Sounds like you had a ton of blind dates(you sound like an expert)and that you likely have never played quarterback(nor maybe even football).

32, had very few blind dates; just thought it unusual to compliment someone on his calmness. As far as playing quarterback, I never did. However my brother played quarterback on scholarship at a D1 university. But me, nope. My hands were too small and I lacked “calmness”. How about you, 32, bet you had a rocket arm and “calmness” to boot!

Sorry about the small size of your hands. It can be a curse for a lot of reasons.

12 Qualities of Top-level NFL Quarterbacks
The qualities of an elite NFL quarterback include

  • Combination of superior arm strength and pinpoint accuracy
  • Sixth sense connection with receivers, ability to place the ball where only the receiver can get it
  • Learns the offensive system and runs it with unfettered poise
  • Studies film; able to read opponent's defensive schemes and anticipate their likely moves
  • Able to stay calm in the midst of pressure and make wise decisions about how best to distribute the ball
  • Ability to quickly scan the entire field to find the most open receiver
  • Mastery of the 2 minute offense
  • Demonstrates leadership on the field; motivates and makes other players better
  • Openly shares his appreciation and all success with the other members on the team
  • The ability to lead a team back to victory in the fourth quarter.
  • Rises to the occasion in all games; even more so in big games
Here's what OC Mike Shula said-

On the progress of rookie quarterback Kyle Lauletta ...

“He’s got – it’s early, we haven’t done anything in pads, we haven’t played any games, but he has a nice calmness about himself that if things don’t go exactly how they are drawn out on the board, his mind works pretty fast so far and he finds the next guy, gets through his progressions. He has a good feel for anticipation and touch and things like that, so I think he’s off to a good start.”

Mike Shula(Don's son) doesn't do blind dates.

Best to go back to the Basketball board.Offer up some prayers over there.

Rookie Kyle Lauletta got to see some familiar faces the past two days at Giants minicamp.

A three-person camera crew from the University of Richmond, the quarterback’s alma mater, squeezed among other media to get a good shot of the university’s 24th player to be drafted into the NFL.

“I’m very proud of what school I went to and obviously people don’t think of Richmond as a big football school,” Lauletta told The Post on the last day of minicamp. “Richmond was amazing to me, so I’m very grateful.

“Those are three people I’ve worked with for five straight years, so I know them really well and got a chance to talk to them yesterday before practice. So it was definitely good seeing them out here.”

Lauletta recalled how his time at Richmond was a challenge, both academically and in football. But he isn’t the only player on the Giants’ roster with roots in Virginia.

“I remember, because [defensive end] Kerry Wynn was a fifth-year senior when I was a freshman, I remember when he made the transition into the NFL and they were coming to see him,” the fourth-round pick said. “And now it’s cool to see that they’re coming to see the both of us. Glad to be teammates with him too, he’s a great guy.”

The 23-year-old had four different offensive coordinators in his five years at Richmond, leaving him with an impressive offensive IQ that helped him get picked 108th overall.

But whenever Lauletta has a question, fellow backup quarterback Davis Webb is his go-to guy.

“Me and Davis are good friends, we’re the same age, he did four years in college and I did five,” Lauletta said. “He’s kind of experienced a lot of what I have and [he’s a] similar-round draft pick and just a similar situation.

Giants play Browns in first preseason game tonight at 7 pm on NFL Network.

Lauletta will likely get a lot of playing time. Last year, the Giants didn’t play Manning much in preseason. Coach Shurmur may have a different approach than his predecessor but either way Lauletta will get a lot of opportunities this preseason to hopefully win over the 2nd QB spot from Webb
