To me they're similar but different sports (men vs. women). It's similar to what men's and women's lacrosse are.
There's a huge gulf between the haves and have-nots in women's hoops, and for the most part the A10 is a have not conference. Unless a special player comes along that can dominate a game for a have not team there's no chance of success in the tournament. A team like UCONN has players on their bench that would be hall of famers here at Richmond. You can't compete against teams like that. Some of the girls in this conference have talent, but most of them would be never be offered a tryout even as a walk on for a team like UCONN.
In some college towns, women's hoops is a big draw. Here, and for the most part in the entire A10, it's not. They should have had the A10 women's tournament at a smaller venue. We went to see them play at St. Joe's one year when the tournament was up there. An arena like that would be ideal for this tournament.
For a while ESPN was shoving women's hoops down our throats. I think they've backed off of that now for the most part, and treat it more like a glorified non-rev sport like college baseball.
I tend to think of UR women's hoops as good entertainment value for the dollar. My wife and I don't have any connection to the team other than knowing a few of the fans that go every game, so we're not privy to all the ins and outs of the team like the friends and family are, which makes up a lot of the attendance on game days. We watch to support the girls (they need all the help they can get) and because they wear Richmond on the front of their jersey. It's a sport that we understand that just happens to be played by girls.
