UMBC is not a good team. What they did against UVA was one of the biggest outlier performances in all of sports history, and if they played UVA 100 times they would lose by ~20 points per game on average. On a neutral court we would beat UMBC most of the time. They are going to get blown out today. This is my prediction.

That's a bold prediction

There was an interesting article in the Bezos Post about the formula to beating Virginia, and how UMBC played it to perfection.

In a nutshell, you can't play your game. You have to play their game. And they're very very good at their game. Odom in essence tossed aside his pride and his playbook, and the 21-21 halftime score was perfect. Once they got the lead, they started forcing UVA to throw up the panicked shots their opponents usually take.

Now that UMBC has to play a "normal" team, I suspect your prediction is right.

Well, just the mental aspect will be very very difficult to overcome. You just had the biggest upset in NCAA history, your team is famous now, phones blowing up. National media going crazy. You are elated. And now you have to go an play again. Will be extremely tough to get up and play at that level vs K State again, but even if you get blown out, you have an unbelievable memory for the rest of your life. Would love to have a coach that can give that to our players.

We did. His name was Dick Tarrant.

I spoke to some of the guys after the loss to Temple in '91 (right after we just pulled the biggest upset in NCAA history). They admitted just what you said about the mental aspect. Against what should have been an easier opponent (although Temple was a beast of a 10 seed that almost made the Final 4), they just couldn't execute.

I was at the game. Many of the fans of the other 6 teams in our pod had left, especially the Syracuse contingent. The atmosphere was flat, and they didn't have that crowd pulling for the huge underdog like Thursday night.

I blame myself for jinxing us. I watched the Syracuse game on TV while visiting buddies at Radford for spring break. Then drove up with my dad to the Temple game. Too bad Wood's eye got scratched. But yes, in general you see it a lot in the NCAAs, big upset and then midnight strikes.

This is definitely the right way of thinking. Just because they pulled off the upset doesn't make them any better of a team. When I looked last night they were 10 or 11 point underdogs. I'd love to see them win and was actually hoping for a matchup of UMBC vs. Buffalo in the Sweet Sixteen.

I think everyone who isn't a K-State fan wants to see UMBC win and I hope they're able to give us a good game. I think there will be a lot of energy

Kansas State's leading scorer will be out tonight, UMBC will still lose by double digits.

UMBC doing a nice job making this an ugly game like Friday night. Not cracking on them, it’s just the way the stay in the game with bigger teams. Neither K. State or Virginia can score, so keeping UMBC in the game.

UMBC down just 1 with 11 minutes left in the game. This is already one of the best stories in sports history, but if they can pull this off and make the sweet 16 it would be even more incredible.

Well congrats to the Kansas State referees for moving on to the sweet 16. Atrociously officiated game. UMBC couldn't hit their shots but still, when every pushoff on them is called and none of K-State's get called.

Edit: I reeeeeally can't stand referees.

I was wrong.
Also, K-State is not very good. Kentucky is going to demolish them in the Sweet 16. That is my prediction. Either Nevada or Illinois-Chicago, I think will give Kentucky a good game for the Final Four though.

I was at all the games in Charlotte. Painful to watch Hoos choke big time on Friday. D doesn't win NCAA championships -- great guard play does. If UMBC had just made FTs and a few of their 3's last night, they'd have blown out K-State. Was a weird regional, even with TX A&M blowing out UNC yesterday. That was fun, since I was cheering for Aggies, just cause I can't stand UNC. Especially after no sanctions against them for violations.

One of my alma maters; Gig'em Aggies!

K State, Fla State, Syracuse, Loyola...teams that don't look great on paper, but they rise to the occasion--you're telling me as a Spider fan I can't expect that every 3 years? WTF

Crazy watching the passion of Porter Moser and Eric Musselman. Those guys coach every possesion like their life depends on it. And Musselman was a head coach in the NBA twice I believe. Love to see it.

Yes, love both those guys passion. I went into the game rooting for Nevada (thinking they would have a better chance of beating Kentucky), but just watching the game, couldn't help but root for Loyola. Their PG reminded me a bit of KA with his ability to get to the rim using quickness and body control to shield the ball from much larger defenders.

next year I'm going to ask you guys to fill out a bracket, then I'll go the opposite
