JP Moorman - 2017 Offer

Linking this here so it's in the right thread...Temple pushing hard for JP.

Not liking the sounds of this one. We could really use a really gifted athlete with some size and I think Moorman fits the bill at the wing. But it seems like Temple is putting the press on. Did we have an in home?
Chris has been personally involved since day 1. OSC

I spoke to a former high school coach who still follows local recruiting. He said to watch what happens with Moorman and one of the big guys in the next couple of weeks. Especially if If Moorman commits it could very well be that Silva either figured out or was told by one of the Temple coaches, who he says are stand up guys, that they could not take him and Moorman. They might have told him they could not guarantee a scholarship until Moorman made a decision. He said because of the scholarship situation recruiting can get complicated, especially for those schools outside the top 6-10. That is why we see so many transfers."

At one point, I was thinking something similar. However it appears Temple has 19 offers (including 14 forwards) and 3 scholarships available (and already seem to have 8 guards).

They have stepped up their interest since Silva committed but not sure it was an either/or situation.

Mite, Temple has much better options than Silva. Saw a video of Silva and he just does not look to be very good. OSC

I am looking at it more as a numbers game. There is a chance they want to add 3 forwards. After Silva going elsewhere, and "Chef-U" going to SBU, they have 14 offers currently to forwards. That makes their forward recruiting more active, including Moorman.

Mite, looking at the info on Verbal Commits, I agree. Morever, JP is one of the few they have offered that they have a realistic chance of getting based on the offers others have received. OSC

To me this means that JP told someone he is going to commit to Temple but didn't want to announce it yet, and it somehow got leaked. Hope I'm wrong

Let's move on to next year. We really don't stand much of a chance with JP or Chase. Face it.

While I would concur that Chase is a longshot, I think we still compare favorably with JPs options. I don't think this leak is encouraging, but you gotta be in it to win it.

We can't just pack up our bags and move on to 2018, we've got a lot of runway before the recruiting year is over, it goes into June, sometimes beyond.

I'd be pretty disappointed and I'm guessing you would be too if with open scholarships our staff stopped recruiting for next class with this much time remaining. You never know what a kid is going to do, if there's an injury that makes higher schools back off, etc.

we'll see. if I decided to commit somewhere, told someone I was going there, and it leaked ... I'd probably make a few calls including to the school in question and then close the deal. I don't think I'd refute the info and then do it later, proving the source right. so we'll see.

I hope you all are correct. I love our basketball program, but I get frustrated losing recruits after spending so much time and emotional energy. We have some excellent recruits already committed. With the exception of one, they committed early. And the one who didn't commit early did so shortly after his visit. I cannot remember getting a highly sought after recruit who we pursued at length. Thus my loss of optimism for landing any of those listed by SF as active recruits. I hope that I am wrong, but I think the odds are heavily weighted against us.

fwiw, most of our recruits are guys we've been on for a long time. it's not unusual for them to take a long time to decide. some happen to be more certain of what they want than others, which applies both to our success and against it.

Here we go; OSC

Two college commitment decisions expected today. Top-75 guard Wabissa Bede around 5pm & JP Moorman around 7pm

I think it's pretty safe to assume Temple based on recent tweets. anything else will be a surprise.

Competition for good players is crazy tough. The personality of the coaches
and how they blend with the prospects, is the key. All players are offered full rides
if good, so what sets the decisions apart? League, facilities, other players, coaches?
I think the personalities of the coaching staff is what seals most deals. How good
of salesmen is our coaches? I don't really have a feel for that but having a son who was
a college player and coach, I know how important coaching personalities are.

having said that Carolina, there is another piece, the young man or woman. they have their own personalities, wants, wishes, comfort levels. the two need to match up not just one-sided.

We lost a guy to Highpoint. That weekend the staff brought a guy in from Kansas and earned his verbal.

This week, we lose a guy to Temple and the staff is already bringing in another player for a visit this weekend. Will we have the same result?

It's definitely a bummer that we can't close our top prospects, although as noted, there are probably around a hundred other programs vying for these guys when you consider who's proximal to us on the desirability index.

I try not to get too hung up on it, we are going to lose more than we win, it's a numbers game in no small part. We will win more of the ones we want when we perform better as a program. I don't think we are losing these guys due to bad recruiting or effort or personality, I think it has more to do with on court success which as of late, has been suspect.
