Rumor is that John Garrett will be the new head coach at Lafayette. I can say that I'm not thrilled with this hire, but wondering what you guys think of the guy. He seems to be solid from the X's and O's standpoint given his years in the NFL, but he has spent very little time in the FCS so I hope he can recruit and run an FCS program.

Other finalists were I believe Durden, who I really liked, and the OC at Harvard and Princeton. Your info is appreciated!

I liked him and thought that he was a good OC. Very knowledgeable with a complex offensive playbook. Not sure how this will translate into head coaching ability, but as I stated before we hired Huesman, I would have been very happy had he been named HC at Richmond.
No one can say with certainty because he is being placed in a new and different job, but I think that you have the potential for a great hire. If family history is a factor, he could be spectacular.

He also knows and appreciates the level of academics to which schools of our caliber and those of the PL expect. I expect him to embrace that requirement and I think that he will work well even given the more restrictive pool of recruiting talent.

That said, he will not turn your program around overnight and I think you guys will need to give him a couple of years to bring about the change you desire.

this was his first year here so difficult to give you too much Guy. his resume and bloodlines are great but that does not mean he can run a program, would have concerns just like you. some guys have it, some do not and sometimes your admin has to take a chance and it might be a home run for you. think most of us would have liked it if he had stuck around if that helps any. best of luck

Well good to hear that he was pretty well liked. The Lafayette offense has been putrid the last few years, both schematically and in QB development. I like that he is a QB coach, and has NFL experience, so I think we have a guy who is an expert in our two largest areas of need. He seems smart and measured and well liked enough in the profession to assemble a solid staff.

Thanks for the input,

he was just awful................just kidding. maybe it was him not rocco

Anyone know why Danny didn't take him to UD?

Any insight if Rocco offered to bring John along? In hindsight it seems like John was on our radar from the start, and may have known he had the inside track for a while, so perhaps he was very much expecting this for weeks.

Don't know the story, buy Mike Reilly also didn't bring Garrett along when he took the Nebraska job so perhaps something there. In any every Garrett is roughly 50 times more competent than our prior head coach and OC so the quality of coaching at Lafayette will be exponentially better.

Also congrats on getting Hussman who I like a great deal.

well this takes out the #5 KL connection w/ DR and DE in the same system, believe I counted 5 or 6 RS juniors who graduate in may and can transfer and play immediately.

Good Point, so does Lauletta want to be under his 4th OC? But if Huesman likes the spread offense, that showcases the QB and receivers, generally and I would think
that Lauletta would like that environment. Going to Delaware still means a new OC, plus new surroundings and school A big thing in his favor is, he would be closer to PA and home in DE. I see this as a 50-50 toss up.

Kyle has been dealt a difficult hand but i don't see this anywhere close to 50-50.

Agreed 100%. John is a good man and i'll be rooting for his success at Lafayette if he does end up getting the job.

Riley hired Danny Langsdorf to be his OC at Nebraska, after DL left Oregon State and spent one year in the NFL with the NYG. Riley coached with Danny's father at Linfield, Danny played for Riley at Linfield.

They worked together forever with the Chargers/Saints and then at Oregon State, where Langsdorf was the OC from 05-13, succeeding Paul Chryst. They are joined at the hip. Langsdorf was always gonna be Riley's guy at Nebraska. No reflection whatsoever on Garrett.

Thanks, good info. It appears Garrett to Lafayette is as good as done, and hopefully an announcement will be made by Thursday. Can't wait to have Lafayette led by a real coach, as the program has a tone of potential, and curious to see who he adds to the staff. Perhaps we shall meet again, this time in the playoffs, where the Patriot League rep receives its annual beat down by the CAA!

Good luck to him, many of us seemed to think he has potential to do a good job as a HC. Time will tell if we are right. Keep his name in your directory.

Good luck to Coach Garrett. Is there any chance he pulls any assistants from Rocco's old UR staff? I'm thinking it is unlikely unless someone took a step up (ex. position coach to coordinator).

It would be pretty great if he offered Rojas a coordinator job, huh?

Maybe he can take a picture of our national championship trophy to hang in their fancy football building

The Leopards are 3-0 all time against the Spiders with wins in 1922, 2004 and 2005!

Just a hunch, but I think Garrett will try to bring Mines with him. Not sure what he would have to offer to pull him away from his other potential offers, but perhaps Recruiting Coordinator or one of those fake AHC titles (and money of course).

VT, I think you are selling Huesman and UR short. Rocco is a good coach and will do well at UD. Huesman is also an excellent coach and will do well at UR. Keep in mind the fact that we won at Richmond before Rocco, we won with Rocco, and we will win after Rocco.

Agreed. It' great to upgrade our goal from "Let's win 8" to something more aspirational.

But can we actually do something more than Rocco? I love yalls positivity about this situation but at some point we have to be realistic. We don't have the facilities as has been well voiced by many of us and before we could compete without them but soon we won't be able to keep up unless we get on par with facilities. Rocco will do outstanding at UD because he doesn't have the restrictions that he had at UR and Liberty. Letting him go will prove to be the biggest mistake our program has made and until Huesman outdoes Rocco it won't be an improvement.

VT- I graduated years ago, and I recall hearing those same arguments when I competed. For a small school with a strong academic goal we do very well. In fact many fan bases are jealous. I admire your enthusiasm, keep it up, keep supporting the team, we'll get there.

I agree, I think it's pretty amazing that we can compete at such a high level. Our academic restrictions are an advantage but also hurt us some. I also think Rocco saved us from what could've been a very bad period for us. Hopefully Huesman can take us to new heights but I am doubtful until I actually see it. Not a knock on Huesman but he's no Rocco.
