The John Moran thread got me thinking about Kirby, who is now a scholarship player. From the little he played, good handles, nice looking jumpshot, but how did he get a scholarship yet is not playing at all this year? Did Moran just suddenly beat him out?

Neither of them are gonna play 20 minutes a game, but it seems odd to give him a scholarship and then have a walk-on play the 5-minute sub role instead of him. Only thing I can think is that John is a purer shooter? Kirby isn't hurt is he?

my guess is coaches choice to reward him coupled with family need

Its interesting how some of you can take a very positive situation into a negative and slam the staff. If you check back you will find out that the team including Moran were excited for Joe. This had nothing to do with one of them being evaluated over the other. Joe and Moran are in great shape with their financial situations now. Both are from very different siutations. Both are very good student athletes. Next time try a "glass half full".

I think we were both being mostly tongue-in-cheek there. But at the same time, I do think if we were going to give a scholarship to a walk-on player for one year, it should go to the best walk-on. If that's Kirby, great. If it's Moran, great. I would conclude that Moran is better than Kirby, considering that he is playing and Kirby is not. It's possible that Mooney offered Moran the scholarship and he turned it down. I have no idea.

Sorry, Eight, but why is it our business? Moreover, why care? Not our job. OSC

There are two other differences as well.
Moran is more of a SG, Kirby of a PG.
And Kirby had interest if not offers from FL Atlantic and 3 IVYs, while any interest in Moran besides us doesn't seem to have been made public.

Don't know why I'm even replying, but what the hell.

Is it possible that Moran got better since the scholarship was given? is it possible that he has improved, by working hard in practice (? Isn't that the system we want, the best players who work the hardest in practice are rewarded with playing time (are you listening #30?). Mooney could have held it back and given it to no one, but that would have started another strand. Maybe Moran has Josh's 2nd semester schollie?

Mainly tongue in cheek, but it should never be construed as a "positive situation" that we have to award a scholarship to a walk-on. Surely, it was a positive for Joe Kirby and his family and likewise he was probably very deserving, but we need all 13 of our schollies going to guys who we recruit to play a significant role on the team.

Again, this is why we run a 7 man rotation and then wonder why we only have are ever a mid-pack A-10 team. We wouldn't have had the scholarship had we not recruited Smithen and Diekvoss and then sent them on their merry way after realizing they couldn't play.

If there was an NCAA tournament for "nice guys" and having our players "feel good" and "rewarding effort", we would receive a bid to that every year though. Does CBS have the rights to that tournament, I can never seem to catch it during March Madness?

97, other programs, e.g. Duke, routinely award scholarships to walkons. Now I understand that UR basketball is not Duke, but this occurs all the time. Really do not see it as a cause for concern, rather a good thing that shows a bit of class. But, here again, just my humble opinion. OSC

Maybe next year, we can give the extra scholarship to a lucky fan.

I like this but my sarcastic post trashing our award winner this year probably now makes me ineligible. I'm not very good, but feel confident I can shoot FT's better than Trey or Deion with a little practice.

And Duke can give away their 13th schollie because they have 5 McDonald all American's starting for them. We don't have that luxury.
