Jaden Daughtry - Portal Commit

As you can see from this post, lot of positive about Daughtry, but of course defensive concern.
We'll see. That is one person's opinion, and probably from someone who is disappointed he left and therefore posted something negative. We heard the same about Tyler on here at times, but that didn't mean he wasn't a great player for us.

It is much easier to see how players will fit offensively versus defensively. It isn't all scheme, you do have to be able to stay in front of our man and we had far to many players last year that couldn't do that. But the weak side guy cheating too much is scheme and we need to throw that part of our defense in the crapper ASAP.
I hear about the weak side cheating on here a lot, but to me that is basketball. Teams on offense work the ball around, set screens, penetrate, feed the post, etc. to get open looks. That is their goal. Certainly was mine when I coached. We get plenty of open looks every game, every team does, so it shouldn't be a surprise that we give up some open looks.

Last year was bad all the way around. Offensively and defensively. We were slow and non athletic, and teams did well from 3 against us. But, 2 years ago, in 24, we were 49th in 3 point D, with teams shooting only 31% against us. In 23, we were just outside the top 100 with teams shooting about 33%, and in 20 and 21, we were top 50 and top 70, with teams shooting 30.5% and 31.6%. So, my point is every year we hear about how we give up too many open 3s, but the stats usually show we do pretty good with 3 point D. Watch other games and u will see that teams give up plenty of open 3s every game. You can't defend everything. The offense's goal is to get open looks and you can't just magically take those away.

agreed, but 2 years ago we had some defense first guys. guys who could help and still recover. will have to see, but on paper I don't know that we have enough of those guys for next season. but of course, the scoreboard counts points so you definitely need scorers. I'm glad we added some.

Agree, and the better athlete, the better chance to help/recover on defense. Still have another spot. Would love a shooter who could play some good D.

I watch a lot of college basketball and there is always some level of flying dutchman trying to close out a 3 point shooter. Our's last year was excessive perhaps the most I would see in any game I watched. But yes, Mooney needs to recruit better athletes and defenders always.

“I grew up playing center, I grew up playing the big man until I got to about eighth grade. I grew up working on a bunch of footwork and post moves around the basket, pivots, step-throughs,” Daughtry said in a Monday interview. “That definitely opened up my offense. And I’ve been working on my jump shot, and my passing and my ball-handling.”

Daughtry’s list of transfer options did not begin with Virginia schools, he said, though the opportunity to come back to Richmond, as a Spider, ranked as a significant “pro” on that list.

“If I could come for a nice amount and for a great program, definitely,” said Daughtry, named All-Metro at L.C. Bird and Benedictine. When he visited Richmond, “From the jump, I just got the family vibe, the family feeling for everybody,” said Daughtry, who intends to begin workouts with the Spiders in May.

His body matured, naturally and through commitment in the weight room. He left Benedictine weighing 210 pounds and Daughtry said at Hargrave, and then at Indiana State, he lost “baby fat” and toned up.

“Indiana State definitely did take my body to another level, becoming bigger and stronger and everything,” said Daughtry.
