How can Creighton do it

I think it's a combination of factors.

In general, Omaha is a decent-sized metro area with no pro sports that has gone all-in on college/amateur sports on a broad scale. The only real competition for Creighton is the Huskers, and their major sports haven't been lighting the world on fire recently.

Creighton specifically has gotten into a great spot with the hoops-focused BE (put in position with a dominating presence in the MVC before that), and they've had back-to-back long-term excellent coaches who have provided a lot of stability.

Bit of a chicken-and-egg situation, but with their large and rabid fanbase they've been able to put together great facilities including a huge arena in partnership with the city that they nearly fill every game...usually top 10 in average attendance. And with that fanbase I'm sure they've been able to put together a substantial NIL fund.

Success typically breeds success, and they made a great hire with Altman, invested in the program, and have continued to put themselves in position to excel under McDermott.

We've had flashes of that, and while we've spent a lot of money in places, we don't seem to have made the all-in commitments to capitalize on our successes, fix shortcomings, and push things forward.

I can provide plenty even better examples, and actually have showed how mid major coaches and programs have jumped circles around us in the "blue moon" era.

Very easy for the Queallyites to attack this one. They sell out a 17k capacity arena and play in the big east..................and have a good coach.

How does St. Mary's do it?

I don't know that Creighton is the best comparison for us. They are in the Big East, which is a huge advantage to start with, and they have about 3x our undergrad population, so it's a much larger potential fan and donor base, and I imagine many of them stay local. Like SF said, they have minimal competition there for eyeballs, too.

yep they are the only game in town and take advantage of that while we lose by 41 to the only competition in our city.

They have 4000 undergrad students. They were invited into the Big east when we thought we might be. Omaha MSA pop is right at 1 mil.

I guess I was looking at their total enrollment, which is about 9k. And they were invited to the Big East, we were not.
