HERE'S THE SAD TRUTH

In my head - I am thinking at some point do we just give up on defense and try to outscore everyone like a VMI system did for years or the old days of Loyola Maramount. The problem is though - we are not deep enough, contrary to popular belief, to do this. In order to speed up the game to hyper speed, you have to be able to sub and keep guys fresh, but we have little to no production from our bench - right now. Only 2 games so it could improve.

As usual it comes down to your expectations of this team and program. 2-0 seems like utopia compared to the last 6 seasons when we didn't reach that mark. I'm not a Mooney guy but I will readily admit that we are improved...especially on offense...we definitely would have lost 1 one or both of those games the last few years. Maybe we figure out some things on defense as the year progresses and we look good on the road and against solid/good competition. I will be the first to come on here and proclaim that Mooney has re-made himself. At the same time these first two opponents are not great or probably even good in the grand scheme of college hoops. I think we all knew that this team would be "improved". Time will tell how much.

Agreed, and after the press saved us in the St Francis game I thought for sure we'd see it more yesterday than we did.
Me too. Wasn't the book on Vandy that they had young guards who might be susceptible if pressed?

I dunno, Saben Lee looked pretty damn capable of breaking a press all by himself. I don't think it was going to have the same effect as it did against St. Francis, so I'm fine with not having done it. In addition, we were down 12 to St. Francis, whereas here we were up late. So, not exactly sure when you think we needed to deploy a press?

Maybe it's just me not understanding the game but if you have a guy that is torching you for 30 points, I would think you would try and make some adjustments, change personal, switch defenses or something to slow the guy down and get him off his rhythm. Maybe some of you who are more knowledgeable than I am can tell me something.
you need to specifically address all technical basketball questions to Homer, in vino, father, and the like. but I'm here for you if you ever need opinions on uniforms or halftime entertainment.

I'll answer this. We should have deployed the press after halftime when Vandy hit 5 straight 3 pointers on us. Our halfcourt defense is bad in part because we have 2 small guards who like to take risks. Our press is so effective because we have 2 small guards who like to take risks, other guards like Andre who can really interfere with passing lanes in a full court pressure situation.

Full court pressure with the goal to get the ball in Pippen's hand with Gilyard guarding him would have reaped gold for us. Instead, we let Vandy drop 53 in the second half and didn't give them a damn different look the entire half.

this statement is laughable.....technical knowledge...

The anti-Mooney faction in general is technically more basketball savvy which loosely translates into higher expectations. The anti-Mooney crowd examines performance as much or more so than wins and losses.

Performance more than wins or losses? is this the academy awards?

Here is a fact. We are 2-0. Yes, there are things that need to worked on (notice I didn't say everything is perfect) and yes, you losers will never be satisfied.

And as bad as the defense has been for 3 of the 4 halves we have played, here is a technical fact......The opponents have had the ball 3 times (I think) to win basketball games. We got stops everytime.

Here is another technical issue for you. As great as a game that Cayo played, it was his responsbility to guard #24 in the early moments of the 2nd half. He left him open 3 times in a row and let Vandy right back in the game Now, in years past, he may have cratered and been a non-factor the rest game--to his credit he did not and got arguably the biggest rebound of the game, which set up Nick's 3.
If, at any time anyone wishes to debate what I have said on this board, fine, bring some the facts to show my error. If you can't show that I was wrong in what I've said, well .......

Mostly felt some pressure would have potentially disrupted their offense to a degree. I didn’t feel like whatever we were doing was working terribly well.

Vandy was very comfortable in their offensive scheme. Spiders did nothing to disrupt their offense, motion or scheme. Plays were run to put players in scoring position; for hot hands. All failures for defense. UR defense is plan in progress, question is will it improve?

am a D guy, like DT, the guy at uva, the guy at tx tech. the year CM went to the sweet 16, we played very good D, we also had two big athletic guys up front and have not had that since. if our lineup cannot match up and defend, have to start using more zone and mix it with some pressure. DT used zone for years until he recruited better players and then mixed a tough man to man with zone, heck duke runs some zone. anything you have to do to make the other guy think a few seconds is an advantage. D can keep you close and we cannot out score teams, especially good teams every night, just not going to happen.

Not using the press more often, especially after Vandy came out in the second half and quickly took the lead with a barrage of 3s, is classic CM. No adjustments, even when it’s clear to everyone in the building that what we were doing wasn’t working. Try something different to break the opponents momentum. The press saved our ass against St Francis! CM has to use it more often as we try and improve in the half court man to man. He has to put this roster in the best possible position to be successful and be married to one defense or style of play.

Sitting in your seats hoping for a Spider to turn it over or miss a foul shot so you can rant on the coach shows both wisdom and maturity. The team looks like they have some resilience so you may be disappointed.

44, I hear you. Unfortunately there are a lot of fans that cannot stand the bs from Mooney the last 7 years, and No Cattle Hardt. PQ and Jabba are just shoveling it to the fan base and laughing. So yes, there is going to be a chunk of the fan base that cannot stand the complacency and is going to scrutinize Mooney on every move. You have to admit, after an offseason talking about fixing the defense, to give up 90+ the first two games against weak opponents is not really dousing the #FMM fire, right?

If the D doesn’t improve it will be a problem. Playing solid man takes a lot of time to build in practice and then again in games. But if you have the increased ability to score solidly from 4 of the 5 starters you will end up with more possessions. It usually takes good teams 5-6 actual games to get comfortable with themselves. Especially with Blake and Nick entering the picture. Actually I am so impressed with Cayo’s development I think he will grow into being a scorer. His strength gain and confidence gain are very visible. Sunday is another day to grow.

I think technically the differential in possessions can never be more than +/-1. You can certainly end up with more shots and that’s of course helpful if you make them. With good defense we can certainly Create a scenario where having efficient scorers will help us win games over less efficient scorers.

By the modern definition of a possession yes, teams should essentially always be within one possession of each other. The original concept, created by Dean Smith I believe, worked a little differently where offensive rebounds counted as new possession instead of continuing the current possession, and so teams could have a very different number of possessions.
