Gilly, Grant, and Blake testing NBA waters...

Agree, 05...no way any of them will be on the NBA radar, but with the recent rule changes, it's a no-brainer for guys like this to declare, get feedback, and see what they need to improve on next year.

All 3 said they are maintaining their eligibility. This is a chance for them to get some feedback. Why not take advantage of that benefit? My guess is they will all be back, but you never know.

Curious - was Gilyard on track for graduation in just 3 years? Were Golden and Francis on track to graduate this spring before the virus hit the fan?

I can see all 3 of them having a professional basketball career whether that be NBA g-league or overseas but I think of all of them I think gilly has the best shot to be an NBA player with a similar type of play to Isiah Thomas as both of them are 5'9.

Yep, from an individual standpoint makes sense, though what a year to do this. Doubt there will be any in person workouts in the near future.

Only downsides I can think of:
Grant - Feedback is: You have to prove you can play 35 minutes a game in the A10. Positive is that he increases his conditioning and doesn't need Grace eating up minutes. Downside: he pressures Mooney to ditch the load management system, loses effectiveness down the stretch run next year and gets in foul trouble and back to fighting with the refs.

Gilly - scouts tell him he needs to score more and be more pro active looking for his offense night in and night out. I think this would be a positive for the most part, but negative could be: Already have a shot dominant guard in Francis, need shots for Grant, Sherod, etc and maintain the chemistry we had last year.

I feel reasonably comfortable that none of them are going to be drafted this year. Of course, there is a possibility I could struck by lightening today or the world could be struck down with some pandemic virus.

Thanks for posting some of the downsides of this for the team. Grant, Gilly, and Francis are all going to be getting feedback on how to improve their odds of making it in the pros and feedback will focus on what they need to do individually on the court. What they need to do individually might not compliment what the team collectively needs to do.

Plus as 23 said, individual workouts are probably not happening, so is this basically a video review by some NBA scouts.

Do you have to be a certain year to do this? Really, I think Burton may be our best NBA prospect. I would like him to hear some feedback.
Rather, I would like him to get some feedback - i.e you are a wing, need to improve your handles and your 3pt %. I'm sure he knows, but would think the added feedback from the LEAGUE would be extra motivation.

Is there a cost for this process? Just wondering

How would this even work under the shutdown of the NBA and all social distancing
that we currently are living?
The NBA will shift to an online-only version later this year for the playoffs and future seasons, much like NASCAR has done. Buy your tickets now to support your favorite esports team!

Don't think you have to be a certain year to do this - but I believe you can only do it once. So it would make sense for every Junior in the country to declare for the draft. If your a frosh or soph, you better be certain your leaving within the next year or so.

No harm in doing this to get feedback really. Cost - minimal, other than filing the paperwork and I don't think any of them working with an agent (which you can do now) or attending workouts (think you can do this) - because when you work with an agent and have workouts - I think you have to pay for the costs of those.

Only negative - as mentioned above, is does the feedback make them do things next year on the court more geared towards their personal stats rather than team goals. But I am not concerned much about that because I don't see these guys having that ME first mentality. Not to mention - in all honesty - at this point in time - they are not NBA players. Their decision will likely come down to - do they want to try and make good money and go overseas, and give up on the NBA dream for a few years. OR - do they want to make minimal money, stay in the G-League and hope for a call up to the NBA.
All three have professional futures - just will depend on where they end up.

Take the cash in Euro every single day. If you have talent and can play in the league, the league will find you.

Assuming that this is a program strategy, I think it’s a great move. Having kids declare and get professional advice on what they need to add to their game is a positive, and a positive for the program when they return (both from a publicity stand point and a program knowledge stand point).

My only question is why didn’t Nick and Cayo join as well?

I tend to agree Spiderfan - the only thing with the Euro option is that you are not likely to get a call up during the season, so your hoping each summer to make a roster and your competition each summer increases. Whereas in the G-League, you could get lucky with some injuries and get called up and if you make the most of your short window in the NBA call-up, you might draw some interest. But that is a big gamble.

True, that is allure of the G league and certainly you see it happen when injuries happen. I think most of those G league players have at least 1 NBA level elite skill that makes a gamble worth taking. Think our guys lack that one NBA elite skill but have better all around games that are best suited to a longer pro career overseas.

Wish them well, but what happened to all the loyalty to the Coach? Looks like a jailbreak to me if any offers come along.

Will there be any way we find out about what scouts say about them? I would be interested to see what they say about each of them and If they have any chance for next year.

That would have been a fun headline: "Entire college team starting lineup declares for the NBA draft."

Honestly though, they need to come up with another way to describe this. These guys are not REALLY declaring for the draft. They are seeking NBA feedback. When you can pull your name back, you're not truly declaring for anything. The guys who put their names in or keep them in after the cutoff date are "declaring." Until then, it needs a different term.

I think it should be called exploring the draft
Yeah, it really is ridiculous to say you are declaring for the NBA draft when in reality you are just doing some workouts for some scouts and then will be back at your school next year. I guess it serves as a healthy ego boost for college juniors to post on social media though.

I certainly get their reason, and I'm excited for them. But some of you are always concerned about what image is projected to potential recruits and their families. Now if I was a recruit considering Richmond and I read THESE headline and twitter feeds, I might pause and wonder "What's going on there that most of their starters are considering leaving early?"

I think most recruits would be familiar with the current draft process and not view it as a negative toward our school.

I think it's actually more likely the opposite - recruits may see us as a program that can help guys get NBA looks.

Yeah, I don't think recruits are going to see it in this fashion. If they were Xferring, that'd be different.

This is a positive for the program, especially in front of a 5 person recruiting class.

they'll tell Gilyard to get stronger, Francis to create more for others, and Golden to work on quickness laterally and especially vertically.

Probably more of an exercise in them identifying agents for after next season. The whole thing is kinda silly for college kids to explore the NBA draft when there is realistically no chance that they will be drafted.

whats the timeline for when they have to pull their names if they want to come back?

believe it is June 3...anyone other than myself a little anxious about this?

with all the uncertainty in both the professional leagues and the NCAA because of the virus...it's no telling what may happen...

this has to be making the players circumstances and decision making much more complicated...

for instance there could be opportunities available now that might not be available next spring...

sadly some would say the Spiders 2020-21 season might be in jeopardy...

hoping they all return and we play the season, but worried until I see what actually happens between now and June 3...

Go Spiders!
