Gill releases statement

She has mandated that all requests for comment about any issue from anyone on the academic side of the university, at least, go through her office.

Wow. Looks like her mandate has been a huge success.

Is there anyone on campus that knows what the hell they're doing in their job, besides Rocco? Screw up here. Screw up there. Fiasco over here. Fiasco over there. Bozo in this job. Bozo in that job.

When you're rich you can continue to be lazy and make stupid mistakes over and over again until the money runs dry.Money can hide dysfunctionality where things continue to operate on autopilot, leaderless, without a compass heading and without any form of accountability and efficiency.People that put in 12 hour days and see what goes on usually get out of Dodge especially if they see their boss as a "lightweight".Danny doesn't appear to be a complex guy,he and his team work hard and get results.Putting up with a layered bureaucracy that appears unresponsive would drive any go-getter nuts.

this sounds like a stupid reality show and really hope it is not. must say when i served on a couple of boards when in town, it seemed, appeared, that there was organization, vision, action, now, perception is, keystone cops.

Exactly.

This is not just about money and salaries, though our assistant coaches are paid below market. See Thweat's departure as well as Trott. Trott didn't want to leave but the raise he got was ridiculous. It has to do with equipment and other issues like weight room.

When my son was playing just 2-3 years ago little kids would ask him for his gloves after a game and he had to tell them he couldn't. I asked why and he said they don't get another par until they turned in a worn out pair. And it went much deeper than that as far as equipment. That is just an example.

Rocco used to get frustrated with attendance as well. Notice I said attendance and not tickets sold. We can sell out a basketball game which seats more than our football stadium, or close, but we can fill up the football stadium. Unless it's W and M or JMU. I went to one game this year and the visiting side stands had lots of seats everywhere. prime seats. And this was when we were ranked about fourth in the country. And the students still don't turn out. The school moved the bleachers to the other end zone so they could see the replay board. Then they bitched that the sun was in their eyes. Thankfully we didn't cave in and buy them Ray Bans. We moved game times and the students don't come. They moved start times so people could still get out to dinner or drive back home.yet we still have empty seats. I know this site is full of loyal fans and that may hurt but current and former players saw it all year. I watched one game on tv and still saw lots of empty seats.

Things may have changed some from three years ago but I know those things frustrated him back then. Another factor is Delaware really wants to go FBS. Moliva could probably comment more on this aspect.
I think you may have hit on the X factor. Delaware is interested in moving to FBS. DRcis at that age were getting fbs offers are very tough to come by.

only silver lining (if you want to call it that ) is that I think some major flaws have been exposed in the Athletic dept and perhaps they will be addressed in the aftermath...there always need to be someone to put the blame and its staring right in the face of our commuter AD

OnePutt, the truth hurts, but more so then students attendance, it drives me crazy to see our home seats so barren considering it is stated sold out, and this is NOT just at start of game. I am sorry I live 5 1/2 hours away now, but I don't miss viewing a game. Some fault has to be placed on how marketing promotes or how season tickets are issued or both. My best 76er friend has season tickets for football and BBall and if he cannot make it, another Spider fan(s) is in his seats. I was at Elon where Spider faithful showed the home fans how to support your team, but we don't seem to show the same sense of exuberance at home. I know at Elon Rocco seemed surprised to see so many of us lining the walkway cheering on the team.

It is a frustrating situation not only to the coaching staff and players but also to the loyal fan.

The most damning part is that he goes back to 2000 to illustrate (IMO) that we were strong before Rocco and will be strong after he leaves tomorrow. It's an attempt to show that the department, program and school are bigger than one coach, which in theory makes sense but in this case comes across as a direct knock at Rocco.
Losing Rocco is not a problem, but again to an FBS program. Losing him in conference is unacceptable.

I really like Rocco and hate that he is leaving but he can be replaced with a good hire. Richmond has a lot to offer, though some improvements are needed. Nice town, great academics, really nice campus, good football program. Richmond has a lot to offer. The admin doesn't have to settle for just anyone.
give it a break, this is humiliating to the program and the fans/donors. Losing coaches to in conference rivals is not a good indicator to a guy we like to be hiring.

The Virginia game this year may have been the most excited I have ever seen UR football fans. Seemed to be more fans in Charlottesville than a few of the home games.

University of Richmond Athletic Director Keith Gill released a statement to the Times-Dispatch Sunday night regarding the Spiders' football program and coach Danny Rocco, who said Sunday he will meet with UR officials and Delaware officials Monday. Delaware's search for a coach has focused on Rocco.

Gill's statement, in its entirety:

"I want to congratulate our football team on a great season, our second straight year advancing to the quarterfinals. Wait, what? We made the semifinals last year? This has been a great season for Spiders everywhere unless you had your eligibility pulled out from under you on the eve of Senior Day.

"WeOthers at the University continue to have conversations with Coach Rocco, and to confirm with him, as our President (Ronald A. Crutcher) did last week, our institutional commitment to maintaining a winning football tradition at the University of Richmond. We can win a lot of games in the Patriot League or Big South.

"We have made considerable investments in our football program built a new on-campus stadium in recent years and those investments our coaches have helped us to build championship caliber teams at Richmond. Richmond Football has made 9 8 (2000,2005,2007,2008,2009,2014,2015,2016 - what, you want me to be accurate when I have to work on a weekend?) playoff appearances since 2000, providing powerful evidence of the University's commitment to championship caliber football. Dr. Crutcher and I are committed to maintaining the success of our football program and keeping our jobs, and expect the winning tradition of University of Richmond football to continue well into the future, or at least through 2017."

Hilarious Choppin. It is really unfathomable that our AD has gone MIA during this whole situation, refusing media interviews, and then issues some mealy-mouth press statement that says nothing after the ship has already sailed on your wildly successful football coach leaving for an in conference school?

Is this leadership? Not, in my books. And to think he was up last week in New York giving some speech on strategic thinking/leadership whatever. He wouldn't know leadership, if it came up and kicked him right his a**.

I agree that it is frustrating for the lack of support by students, but I have been reading about PR as the problem for the last ten years, especially on this board, ad nauseam. It is time to accept that it is not a PR problem and that the best PR in the world is not the answer. Free pizza is nothing more than another failed PR attempt.

If I were the President, I would make it mandatory for the students to attend at least 70% of the home football games. That would probably be at most 4 hours for 4 days spread over 4 months. 16 hours of entertainment and camaraderie while building an appreciation for competitive sports and building a bonding with the team and fellow students. Let them take their iPhones and laptops to deal with social media should social crises arise.

I'd attempt a credit approach first and if that did not work then something of a punitive nature. Whatever it takes. Do it under the banner of it being required for a rounded education. It should be anyway, whether they buy into it or not.

The whole culture has to change. Someone at the very top needs to make it happen. The purpose of a solid, well-rounded education is totally consistent with attendance at sporting events and learning in order to better appreciate competition as expressed through athletics and experience a bonding which will last a lifetime. Not sure who would call the shots, but it should happen under the direction and supervision of both the person who supervises the curricula standards as well as the highest administrator dealing with student requirements for graduation.

It's time to clean the house . The University of Richmond has shown the rest of the FCS membership, how not to run a program . Our ineptitude is almost laughable .

Add to this the inactive participation of our fraternities which use to be so active for athletic events when I was in school.

The student problem is a longstanding one. I was in school in the '90s and it was no different then. Kudos to anyone who can truly change it but I don't know if that is possible. If building a campus within walking distance from the dorms and presenting a national championship-caliber team year in and year out is not enough to do it, who knows what will be.

Funny, I am curious if the same person running the Athletic Dept's PR is the same as the university's PR. I seem to remember hearing something about how the university's long time PR firm was let go before the school year started, and all started to channel through Cynthia Price. Since that point is when things have also started to look bad. It makes me wonder whether things have always been that bad or if we have simply started to spin things in the wrong direction!
Fwiw, the university didn't let go of their PR firm, they discontinued using the folks who helped with article/press placement to bring it in house. I know the PR/Comms team personally and they have no control over Athletics PR, the AD staff have their own folks that do that.

The Gill statement is far worse than non-speak. Its a clear and definitive sign that Danny is gone. This statement is purely to say "it ain't about the coach" people so no problem losing him. The real problem though is that by him putting out this statement and someone allowing this to go out, its clear they really dont get it at all. It, in fact, IS all about the Coach. we have results that far exceed our commitment level. We succeed almost solely because of the Coach and his ability to sell what we DO have as positives. The statement makes clear that Gill will simply expect whatever yes man next coach he hires to keep right on winning because we aren't winning because of the Coach, we are winning because of all that Richmond does to support football. He doesn't recognize, at all, that our commitment is sub-standard for our current level of achievement and losing Danny hasn't swayed him either and he certainly doesn't realize that Danny is the primary (arguably sole) reason we have achieved DESPITE OURSELVES.

Gill has to go for letting this happen and if he doesn't go, Crutcher needs to go for failing to hold the guy accountable for the single biggest screw up in Spider sports history (and I mean that). Losing this guy to a conference rival program that you have been consistently better than for the last 5+years is truly absurd. Its not possible to fail any worse at your job. We not only lost a coach, we will lose recruits (not only those already committed, but those who wont come here because other schools will be saying __ dont go there, they aren't committed - - their own coach left for a worse program because they were not committed). Recruiting just got 5x tougher in every single house we go into. Lose Danny to Temple or another FBS and none of this dance and there would be no harm done; lose him like this and its pure and simple a disaster. Our 3-8 record in 2019 can be totally blamed on the decisions this buffon made about football over the last year!!

It will be 3-9.We play 12 games in 2019.

Yeah, I don't think I'm going to renew my season tickets. it's been a good 10 years, but I'm out.

The lightweights hanging around Spider athletics are the negative minds that post on this board. They sound just like the JMU posters.....they know more than the administration. Go figure!

Hope in the meeting they decide to bring back Pronto Pups. This has been a real issue for me since we left City Stadium.

Interesting to know. Nevertheless, from what I can see, since the change, is that the overall PR strategy is now hitting the fan. Like many things, a coordinated PR strategy at UR would probably do the university better. I have spoken to a number of folks internally and externally about Comms at UR (including marketing, but also crisis response management, fundraising, etc.), and I am sort of amazed at how consistent the frustrations are across the university family. Sure, it's anecdotal, but man, when you own eyes see what others seem to be feeling as well, change needs to happen.

Introduced to Pronto pups at City Stadium in the early 60's.Those were the days when Hostess Twinkies,Snowballs, whole milk, pronto puffs were readily available to any kid.
No wonder I take Lipitor daily now.

They were in the corn dog family. And it came on a wooden stick with an end sharp enough to do some serious damage. Would never be allowed today - the stick was like a prison shank.
they were good, must have used lard. The shank that held them was truly a weapon.

yep 66, cannot get a good pronto pup, the slabs and the pronto pups were the best thing going for city stadium. little i, maybe it is the type of student that we are now attracting that is the prob. thought one of the greatest things about coming to campus with our stadium was that the frats would be able to party pregame and walk on over and that is not allowed. what kind of school are we running here? who are we catering to over there, yep, we all know and that is not who is going to a football game or tailgate affair. our current culture is not conducive to sports fans at all.

Why are fraternities no longer allowed to party and then go over to the game?
