University of Richmond Athletic Director Keith Gill released a statement to the Times-Dispatch Sunday night regarding the Spiders' football program and coach Danny Rocco, who said Sunday he will meet with UR officials and Delaware officials Monday. Delaware's search for a coach has focused on Rocco.

Gill's statement, in its entirety:

"I want to congratulate our football team on a great season, our second straight year advancing to the quarterfinals. This has been a great season for Spiders everywhere.

"We continue to have conversations with Coach Rocco, and to confirm with him, as our President (Ronald A. Crutcher) did last week, our institutional commitment to maintaining a winning football tradition at the University of Richmond.

"We have made considerable investments in our football program in recent years and those investments have helped us to build championship caliber teams at Richmond. Richmond Football has made 9 playoff appearances since 2000, providing powerful evidence of the University's commitment to championship caliber football. Dr. Crutcher and I are committed to maintaining the success of our football program and expect the winning tradition of University of Richmond football to continue well into the future."

Yeah, this pretty reads like something you would put out publicly a day before the ish hits the fan. CYA and see-ya both apply here.

This guy is a buffoon. Nothing else to it. Completely inept. Awful dealing with Mooney last year, and awful now. Total clown show.

Why does it take him a year after 2015 semi's to make a statement and then make that comment when we are in just weak shape in locker room and other football related facilities in the RC. Not a good sign at all about our future.

This is a non-statement statement. It basically says we have been good in football and we will continue to be good in football because of the resources we have deployed. No depth,no nothing. No surprise.

There is absolutely no reason for Danny to meet us tomorrow. This "institutional" release(not written by Gill) says it all-which is nothing.

The most damning part is that he goes back to 2000 to illustrate (IMO) that we were strong before Rocco and will be strong after he leaves tomorrow. It's an attempt to show that the department, program and school are bigger than one coach, which in theory makes sense but in this case comes across as a direct knock at Rocco.

A perfect example of classic political non-speak . What did he tell us that we didn't already know ? Nothing .

Unfortunately his show of " support " for the program and the coach , is by design , too little too late .

I'm surprise he didn't issue it after DR announces his plans to coach at Delaware .

Our leadership is a joke .

There is undoubtedly bad blood between Gill and Rocco. Like most, I think Crutcher's going to have to replace Gill as he moves onward.

I find it interesting he bounces between winning tradition and championship caliber -- maybe there is a vision problem, I don't see those as the same.

One thing certain, it will be a memorable meeting tomorrow. Kieth will have so many bus tracks marks on him when he leaves that meeting from DR....
I think Danny will make who ever comes in next life a lot easier after he gets done with Gill
Frankly I don't think Gill survives especially since he wasn't Crutcher's hire What goes around comes around

So Rocco is leaving for UD and the best we can do is point back 15 years and say that since Clawson built this program up we'll be ok without Rocco. Ugh.

Just out of curiosity, who is the individual running PR and communications for this outfit?

Nothing but a walking Charlie Foxtrot.

Cya statement.
The heat is on and he is trying to hide behind dr Crutcher.
Ps. Locker and weight room are places gill should visit before making statements about commitment
Exactly.

This is not just about money and salaries, though our assistant coaches are paid below market. See Thweat's departure as well as Trott. Trott didn't want to leave but the raise he got was ridiculous. It has to do with equipment and other issues like weight room.

When my son was playing just 2-3 years ago little kids would ask him for his gloves after a game and he had to tell them he couldn't. I asked why and he said they don't get another par until they turned in a worn out pair. And it went much deeper than that as far as equipment. That is just an example.

Rocco used to get frustrated with attendance as well. Notice I said attendance and not tickets sold. We can sell out a basketball game which seats more than our football stadium, or close, but we can fill up the football stadium. Unless it's W and M or JMU. I went to one game this year and the visiting side stands had lots of seats everywhere. prime seats. And this was when we were ranked about fourth in the country. And the students still don't turn out. The school moved the bleachers to the other end zone so they could see the replay board. Then they bitched that the sun was in their eyes. Thankfully we didn't cave in and buy them Ray Bans. We moved game times and the students don't come. They moved start times so people could still get out to dinner or drive back home.yet we still have empty seats. I know this site is full of loyal fans and that may hurt but current and former players saw it all year. I watched one game on tv and still saw lots of empty seats.

Things may have changed some from three years ago but I know those things frustrated him back then. Another factor is Delaware really wants to go FBS. Moliva could probably comment more on this aspect.

My emails are already sent. I encourage you to do the same. I've never been more upset at my school's administration.

Funny, I am curious if the same person running the Athletic Dept's PR is the same as the university's PR. I seem to remember hearing something about how the university's long time PR firm was let go before the school year started, and all started to channel through Cynthia Price. Since that point is when things have also started to look bad. It makes me wonder whether things have always been that bad or if we have simply started to spin things in the wrong direction!

I could be wrong but it I don't see it. they just scrapped a donation-related seating policy. Danny is a good coach but he's not going to sell a pile of season ticket on name brand recognition. He's also never shown much interest in outreach.

Oh my God I just feel so naive. Three months ago I thought everything was rainbows and lollipops. Now I am finding out that behind the scenes everything was $hit sandwiches....

I don't know exactly whether the athletic department falls under Price's umbrella or not, but I do know that the university ended its contract this summer with a highly reputable PR firm in town that formerly would have advised and/or assisted in cases like this and others, in favor of shifting everything in house under Price. She has mandated that all requests for comment about any issue from anyone on the academic side of the university, at least, go through her office. And it has been a disaster. It's basically How Not to Handle PR 101.

I really like Rocco and hate that he is leaving but he can be replaced with a good hire. Richmond has a lot to offer, though some improvements are needed. Nice town, great academics, really nice campus, good football program. Richmond has a lot to offer. The admin doesn't have to settle for just anyone.

I'm 90% sure that athletic PR has no say in what ADs do. They are just there to send out the statement to the media. No control over timing or content.
