The Good:

1. Buck. Singlehandlely tried to will us to win. Heart of a lion, just a great game, great competitor.
2. Golden: Another game, another 20 plus point performance. He can play inside and out, stays out of foul trouble, so much to like about his game and his future
3. Fore: Seems to have gotten his legs back under him. Not sure why he didn't start against a much bigger Georgetown team, maybe he is on a minutes restriction, but him being back in the starting line up needs to happen

The Bad:
1. Jacob. Yeah, yeah, I know he is a freshman. But if Mooney is going to role him out for 32 minutes, he needs to attempt more than 3 shots and only 1 assist.
2. Julius Johnson: Needs to recognize that he is the 5th scoring option on the floor at all times. If he has a wide open 3, go ahead and take it, but contested 3's early in the shot clock, should get him a spot immediately on the bench.
3. Solly. I guess TJ did one wrong thing all of last season. Got our hopes up, that this guy is some type of difference maker. Was not tonight.

The Predictable:
1. Mooney's end of half game management. We call a timeout with 15 seconds left to set up our end of half play, which apparently is a contested pass with far too much time on the clock, thus giving Georgetown a chance to get a good shot off (which we compound by fouling them on said shot). We've only see that scenario play out like a billion times during his tenure.
2. Our defense's inability to get a big stop. Literally, every time we needed a big stop, they scored. Again, how many times have we seen that. Way too many.
3. Our post game show. Whoever coined Baghdad Bob to coin B&B post game recap was dead on. You listen to just to that, you would swear we won the game.

At the end of the day, hopefully another nail in the Mooney coffin.

I think you nailed it. Good stuff.

Just want to reinforce how much Grant is adding to the mix. He showed some big time moves & shots tonight. Very happy for him. One can only think if he could have done that last year and on the floor at the same time with TJ...well one can only think.Go Grant!!!!!!!

Grant & Buck were money - they were almost enough. If this was a 3 on 3 type of thing we’d be in good shape. Hate that I feel like we’re wasting those two since we can’t put together a complete lineup

At the risk of sounding like Ulla, I was at the game tonight, and though the loss is disappointing, there is a lot to like in these players. Buck and Grant are both outstanding - so fun to watch. It is worth showing up just to watch those two play. Gilyard, Fore, Sherod all have good and bad moments, but there is potential there. As a whole, the team gave it their all against a bigger Georgetown team (that seemed to make every 3 contended 3). I wish they could have pulled out a win to reward the effort.

Agree with all the concerns about Mooney, but this didn't feel like a 1-5 team. The Robins Center was full of energy and the crowd had a great time. Thankfully, the gloom and doom atmosphere of this board is pretty different from the product on the floor. This young team will grow and there will be some great moments.

On a little different kind of game observation, Coach Ewing made it a point of saying a few nice things to Grant and Buckingham when walking through the handshake line. He stopped them both and said something. Sure that meant a lot coming from him.
"Here's my number -- call me after the season when you're ready to transfer to a real program."

Big observation from the first part of the season is we need a fresh start. We need to go in a new direction.

Clearly what we are doing is not working. It’s time to part ways with Mooney. For me that’s tough to say because I think he is a great person. I like him and his family and I think they have been a good part of Richmond.

That said he is not cutting it right now and this is a business. We need to move on, pRt ways, and find some one who can turn things around.

Tough to say but it’s the truth. This season is a disaster. Time for a change!!!

Frankly, I’m tired of hearing what a good guy Mooney is. He is a nice guy, but who cares? I want someone in here that wins basketball games and graduates our players. The living legend, DT, was not always viewed as a nice guy, but he was able to get the most out each player and won big with guys that were truly student athletes. We are 1-5 and 0-3 at home with a nice guy as head coach. Sorry, that doesn’t cut it for me.

"Here's my number -- call me after the season when you're ready to transfer to a real program."
That's a mean comment. However I can see them requesting a transfer at the end of this dumpster fire of a season. Just don't let 'em transfer to "Broad Street"!

I may be clueless - but I was impressed with the effort tonight. We took away more of the opponent's inside game than we normally do; we rebounded fairly well; Buck and Grant and Khwan shot well from outside; and I don't think the score was ever more than six points one way or the other. And the referees had a few misses - but were better than most of the games officiated at the Robins Center last season.

Georgetown players were tall, they were long, and they were composed. They shot really well from 3-pt land (55.6% for the game, 71.4% in the second half). I think this effort was really good. Call me crazy - but the guys were a tough out tonight.

They played decently, but Georgetown is garbage. We would have looked great against Freeman HS, too, but it wouldn't have meant anything in that case either. That said, enjoy this feeling because Vermont is going to destroy us on Wednesday. At least for one night we'll get to see what a well-coached team looks like in the Robins Center, though.

Here are my observations:

The offense looked good, incredibly better than what we had in the first five games. Even with the atrocious defense over our first 5 games, with this offense we would have won another game or two. The improvement came mostly from limiting turnovers, which I hope continues, but offensive rebounding actually contributed as well. We got offensive rebounds on 28% of our misses, the D1 average is to get offensive rebounds on 29% of misses, and we actually had 1 more offensive rebound than Georgetown. To only be 1% worse than the national average in offensive rebounding is a big accomplishment under Mooney. Our 3FG shooting is still very bad, but if we continue to limit turnovers and continue to be efficient from 2FG range like we were tonight this offense won't lose us games. If we somehow start hitting 3s our offense could actually be pretty good.

The defense was still really bad. The only good part of the defense is that we have been forcing a lot of turnovers, but if we don't get a turnover our defense is just terrible. We can't win games with the defense we played tonight and the defense we have been playing over the first 6 games.

Shot selection: Solly please be a little more selective, Gilyard please be a little less selective.

I mean, they are not the Georgetown of the past, but according to kenpom there are only 2 games left on our schedule against better teams than Georgetown.

I agree it doesn't feel like a 1-5 team but playing like one. Unfortunately that's the issue having 1-5 record when before season started worst case probably was 3-3. So all eyes are on CM and rightfully so.

And 97 I like you starting the observation threads and excellent points with it.

Dick Tarrant - Not such a nice guy, but a great HOF coach. Friends of mine who played for him used to tell me that he really earned his first name.
John Beilein - Good guy and a great HOF coach. It's a shame we couldn't have held on to him longer.
Chris Mooney - Great guy, not so great of a coach. He caught lightning in a bottle in 2010-2011 with KA and company, and his agent made the deal of the century for him. He has the best job situation in the world and has grown complacent. He is clearly just mailing it in these days, and needs to go ASAP in favor of another coach who actually gives a sh*t.

I agree with everything else in your post. However, in the last few minutes we got two consecutive turnovers that allowed us to claw back into it, when Georgetown could have pulled away.

They made their big 3s and we didn't. Nick can't buy a 3 right now, but he'll come out of the slump.

Another game that was there for the taking, and we just didn't.

+1

Georgetown shot well from the 3 point land because we made an effort to take away the inside from them. If we would have guarded them tough at the 3 point line, they would have killed us inside. Pick your poison. It would be nice if our defense was solid all around instead of having to concentrate on being adequate in one area and then leaving another area open for the other team to exploit.

Wow it has taken you this long to figure that out? Mooney has been a disaster for years now. But thanks for getting on board.

Rest of the A-10 is garbage too. Went 3 & 15 last four nights. It's going to be about who can get better the fastest.

A-10 OCC record is 35-38 this year.

My uncle went to some sort of camp run by DT while he was still a high school coach in NJ, and he definitely concurs with what your friends say. Not a pleasant person -- My uncle used to tell me to seek out DT to tell him off on his behalf. Not that I ever did that, of course, but...

I think it's fair to mention a guy like Bill Dooley, who was considered one of the all-time nice guys.

Questions are soft then say word young and all is lepsie
"lepsie?" Lemonade and Pepsi, 80 % Pepsi, or thereabouts, right?
I typically spell it Lepsy, but I know that there are acceptable alternatives.
Or, perchance, this is a word that means something totally different in your native tongue.

I believe he is saying the press is not asking the tough questions, and then we make the excuse we are young and everybody is happy again --- Fezz how did I do?

I hate to leave out Wainwright in this list. I personally liked Wainwright because all we complain about on this board is our inability to recruit, and Wainwright, somehow, was probably the best recruited UR had. Yes - he did push the envelope with the academic line on some of the recruits, but I ultimately feel like he didn't get a fair shot or long enough to see it play out. Not to mention - quite possibly his best recruit - AD Vassallo, was denied by UR and then goes on to have a HOF career at Virginia Tech. Not to mention from a pure wins and losses perspective, Mooney's win % is just above Wainwright, and likely to fall below after this season.

Main point - there is more than one way to win in this league because each of these guys did it differently.

Wainwrong was a decent recruiter but an absolutely dreadful X’s and O’s coach. CM has definitely paid the price in part due to the envelope pushing that ole Jer did. Not an excuse for his own shortcomings but crap would be less screwed up if we hadn’t retrenched after the Jerry debacle.

I never fully understood the whole thought of Wainwright's tenure as being a complete debacle. He clearly wasn't a fit for our university, but in his 3 years, he took us to 1 NIT and 1 NCAA tournament and finished around .500 his final year. If Mooney was doing that every 3 years, he would be beloved right now.

As noted, Wainwright was a terrible offensive coach, I mean really bad. But he delivered an at large for us, gave us one of our all-time most memorable wins (Kansas), and had admissions not screwed the pooch in denying Vassallio, his tenure, I think would be remembered a whole lot more fondly.
