FDU Game

I watched the replay and thought the defense was great. Somewhat lethargic offensive start until they banged home a few 3s to really run out the lead. Agree with what someone posted above that UR was dominating early but the score wasn't reflecting it until then (Goose blown layups, some missed 3s, etc.). That was the kind of switch everything defense I thought would be in play every game, I loved it. FDU had such a small team, felt like we had huge size on them everywhere, felt very much like the VMI game - that they wouldn't score from the field on any first shot attempt.

Offensively - keep getting Roche looks, keep getting to the rack. Grace adds that additional post up element, but also can step out and at least be a threat to shoot from 3, or even put it on the floor occasionally. Plus his presence allows Bigelow to be a definite change of pace at that position when he enters. Loved Bigs exploding for defensive rebounds last night.

Keep practicing 3s - everything opens up when they make em.

I have never been at a college basketball game with 9 points scored in a half. Reminded me of coaching my daughter’s Y team many years ago. It was a big change seeing the Spiders with the huge height advantage and they used it.

Great opportunity for some of the deep bench guys to get some minutes. Noy3s is going to be a great player for the Spiders. He is still getting used to the speed of the game, but his length makes up for slowness on D.

Could definitely see some unhappiness from some players with reduced playing time, but all these guys spend lots of time with practices and so you like to see those few minutes of court time. Granted it drives Mooney crazy, which is also somewhat humorous to me.

On to the P5 opponent at a “neutral” site. Hope the Spiders can take some of the RC energy with them.

I recall holding Temple to 9 at halftime once at the RC. I believe it was 28-9 at halftime.

Different beast all together as noted on other threads due to disparity, but I believe there was a women's basketball game (not a Spiders game) where the final score was 98-2.

Great game last night. A couple observations, mainly from the reserves because the starters all played well and just dominated.

Noyes: Nice outside shot, his release is low which means he has to be wide open, but he shoots it with confidence. Could see him getting a bit more time.

Walz: He got called for that moving screen twice now upon immediately entering. I like how he is always calling for the ball on offense. He is still adjusting to the flow of the college game but I think he has potential.

Dread: He is getting mop up time only with the walk-ons. Mooney might have already sent him the link to enter the portal, if not, he might want to check it out.

Dji: I've been a huge Dji advocate but if you are going to be PG in a Mooney system, you have got to have better ball security. Think he might be in his head a bit, could see his frustration when he got yanked after a TO in the second half.

Randolph: Steady play from him. Interesting he got yanked as well for throwing the ridiculous pass when he got trapped, so a bit of parity with Dji getting yanked after his TO.

Crab: Working his way back into the rotation a bit? Maybe, hard to tell with the blowout nature of the last 2. But as a senior player, I think he has more of a role than he has shown yet, I think he can be a steadying influence out there when times get tough.

Final note of Bigelow: When he gets going, he literally is on fire. I love watching him play with confidence, he can do some much out there from hitting 3's, has a mid range game, big time dunks, and tenacious defense. There was a 5 minute stretch in this game where he was simply unstoppable.

Good post.

Noyes looks good out there. Can shoot the 3, has length, has some hops. If not this year, will definitely be a factor for us during his career here.

Walz: Your last sentence says it perfectly. Still adjusting and getting used to the speed out there, but he does have potential.

Dread: Correct. He is 13th in the rotation. If he wants to play, he could follow the path of Sal and Wilson and there is nothing wrong with that.

Dji: I earlier said just focus on back up PG, but I don't see it. The ball handling is too shaky. He's never really played much PG here so it's probably safe to assume he will be stuck behind several guys at off guard, and I think the lack of an outside shot will hurt hopes for good playing time.

Randolph: Steady is a good word. Has had a few bad turnovers, but continues to show he is a positive when on the court. His 3 point shot looks smooth. Could see him getting more minutes if we go to an 8 man rotation.

Crab: I think the injuries are a factor and am not sure he can ever get to being a key part of the rotation. I look at him and think what could have been because you can see the talent there.

Bigs: Versatile and athletic. His 3-5 minute stretches where he does a little bit of everything are a thing of beauty.

Roche: Love love love that 3 point stroke. Keep shooting! And, I will continue to say he has impressed me on the defensive end. He is active and gets after it.

Starters: What great starts the past 2 games. Keep coming out with that energy on both ends. They look more and more comfortable together each game.

Solid recap of bench. Noyes does have low release point similar to Dji hope both can improve that. Noyes can get away w it more due to height. He shoots it w confidence tho.

Walz while adjusting to flow & our O he is impactful in limited mins. Doesn’t mean scoring but active looking for ball like u said. Ways to go for sure but also so far far ahead of guys like Friendshuh or Luke P.

Think someone else said it but Mooney was starting to sub Randolph out when that long ball pass was in the air.

Good to see some walk on time. Honestly tho could have been a couple minutes longer. Not many opportunities like that but maybe I’m being too picky.

But 97 tbf if VT4700 made that comment re: Dread ppl would be all over him. Doubt we’ll see any indignation here.

Gkiller, on Dread, you are probably correct. Think I have a bit more cred on here.

But also painfully obvious. He was a reach offer to begin with and he redshirted last year and is not playing this year, so a spade is a spade. Noyes is getting in ahead of him and I think Mooney singling him out as a player to watch in the offseason was now more of an acknowledgment that while he probably won't be getting a lot of minutes this year, that he sees him being a larger part of our rotation in future years. I think the board, myself included, misinterpreted that. Dread really doesn't get mentioned ever, he is basically on the same level as the walk ons.

Lastly on the subbing out after bad TO's. When he did it to Dji, I was like man Dji is in his doghouse, but thought Moon was consistent when Randolph got yanked.

Maybe a reach by recruiting offers. But by 247 scouting, equal to Gilyard...
But could be similar to Wilson & Sal...

u have plenty of cred. not disputing. objectively I just think it was worse than anything VT has ever said about Dji.

btw I have decent insight into the Gonzaga program (Dread hs in DC), I know it pretty well although not as much as I once did. I had expressed concern on this board even prior to commitment that Dread didn't play that much as a junior on Gonzaga. good team w other D1 guys but still red flag. Think some reaction on here was...oh but his bro is good player at penn state. Malcolm did get burned by the Covid year tho, like some others, so he missed out on his senior year as a main guy presumably. But bigger loss for him comparatively when your PT was previously limited. there r also late bloomers, we'll see.

Loved the looks of Dread's defense in the hs/aau highlight tapes. But you also need to be able to score. Just a very crowded spot at the moment, and also in the near future unless we have a transfer or two.

I thought Dji looked really good in the 1st half (re-watch). Where I picked up in 2nd half he was not getting any PT, then got in garbage time. I felt like at that point he looked like he was either pissed off, or just a bit in garbage time mode (which I can understand the sentiment in either case), which seemed to lead to two shaky turnovers. Again, not dumping on Dji here, b/c 1st half I saw some nice drives and finding the open man for assist, and good work on d and the boards. For his sake, wish he would have been more careful at the end b/c I do think Mooney will hold those against.

I am extremely glad to see Walz and Noyes getting some burn - I think critical to their development and not be that guy that Mooney forgot to put in. I am an advocate for Walz getting a minute early in games too, with the hope he can keep it really simple on offense and impact the game with rebounding and D. I do have some of the same concern on Noyes shot so far, seems to be low release point. But, I feel like his hops, if he can get a little stronger can do enought things that it works for him.

The times those two get will be immeasurable as we move forward.

SF no change to box score. Maybe nobody will notice. & defer to the vet Burton, I get it.

I follow Penn State, probably made that comment but yeah I saw the red flags that he was not a big player on his school team as a Junior as well.

I'm not trashing the kid, sorry if it comes off like that, just my assessment of where I see this headed.

Interesting stat on this brother, Myles. He has taken 58 shots this year and 57 of them have been 3 balls. A true one trick pony, he his quite good at that trick though, hitting over 47% of this 3 balls. Playing his 5th year at Penn State, who I might add is gonna sneaky good this year.

Sad that Randolph didn't even get credited with an assist then, which you'd think he would have if they thought the tip came from Burton.

Maybe they did know it went off FDU and just incorrectly applied the NBA rule rather than NCAA.

With the FDU own basket and Quinn’s accidental basket, why can’t we be this lucky against tougher opponents haha
No kidding. May have used up all the luck on a game where it wasn’t needed. Can’t believe they scored the deflected basket incorrectly though. I guess if the announcer says it then it has to be true….

Dread is behind too many guys, and next year we lose Goose, but add Smith and Tanner, so with Nelson, Smith, Roche, Randolph, and Tanner here, I don't see much of a path to PT for him. Dji could be in the same situation. He did come in before garbage time in the 2nd half, checking in at the 16 minute mark, but turned it over right away, and came back out. Some might call that a quick hook, but we saw what happened the last 4 minutes when he came back in. He has played the 8th most minutes, and has the 2nd most turnovers. You have to earn the coach's trust if you are trying for PT. Without the 3 ball and with not much scoring in his game, he has to take care of the ball when out there.

Walz and Noyes have potential, and it is always good when they can play, but I wouldn't make it a must that we give Walz or Noyes some time early in the game. If Noyes needs to be a little more open on 3s because of his release point, that is okay. Our guys get lots of open looks from 3 during the game. I thought he looked good out there, and you can tell he is a good shooter.

Indignation comes after about the 20+ post targeting a specific player while basically saying the same thing. 97 pointed out the obvious re: Dread. No appearance of having axe to grind.

But "my goodness" let's all get along and just "agree to disagree".

I'm usually in the "best players play" camp. I don't give out minutes for development. when you've earned those minutes, then you get them.

but with Reed to Tulsa and Grace gone next year, we're likely going to need Walz regularly next year unless we land a surprise in the late period. so get him a couple 1st half minutes each night and more when we can. the game will slow down for him in time.

Play him when you can, but don't play him just to play him. He will get time this year without having to play every game. Sometimes, you can look back on a 2 to 4 minute stretch in the 1st half and say that went a long way in deciding a tight game.

I think Mooney is doing a good job with getting Walz some minutes. Granted the blowouts have helped that and he will not get as much time in non-blowouts, but he is also showing Mooney that at worst he is not a liability when on the court, so hopefully, we can continue to get him some spot minutes in games. Because he will be needed next year for sure.
